Chapter 18: Snowman
Anna POV
The wolf didn't get me though. I opened my eye and the wolf that tried to get at me was no longer there. I glanced over at Kristoff who was struggling with his own wolf. Suddenly it was dragged off into the darkness that surrounded us as well.
"What's going on!", I was too confused to process what was happening around me and my heart was beating too loud in my ears to hear much. Another one jumped at me, but before it could, I saw something white tackle it to the ground. Then I saw what it was. It was another wolf except this one was different from the others. This one was bigger and it's fur was white. I didn't even know they came in white.
It stood in front of me growling, only not at me, it was facing the other ones. It's fur was standing on it's end and it barked at the others. Then another big black one stepped forward and barked back. Soon they were circling each other. The tension was very clear, I could practically see it in the air. Then the dark one leaped forward and bite the white one's neck. It didn't seemed to do any damage though. The white one wildly shook it's head and the dark one fell feet away. The others whimpered and backed off.
Then the dark one came charging at it again. They struggled in the snow for about a minute until the white one caught it's opponent by the neck and held on tight with its sharp white teeth. They each struggled in their battle of dominance and submission until the dark one yield by ceasing to struggle. Wherever it tried to move, the white one let out a low deep growl that told the other it would not hesitant to end it all.
I had mixed feelings about what was happening. A part of me was happy that the white one won because the dark one was ready to eat me. The other part of me was terrified that I would become the winner's meal. After the white let go, the dark one scurried away to join the other wolves I had totally forgotten about. The white one growled at them and they all laid down on their stomachs. The one it had defeated seemed to reluctant, but it obeyed anyway. It looked to me like they just got a new leader. The white let out a bark and they all ran into the woods.
Suddenly I felt a hand on my right elbow and I looked to find Kristoff. He had a very tight grip on me, which hurted, but I didn't mind nor complained. It was comforting in someways. I didn't need to be a mind reader to see the fear that was crystal clear in his eyes. I felt guilty for this. None of this would have happened if we had left at dawn like he wanted. His death was my fault and mine alone. Sven was on the other side of Kristoff. I felt for the poor animal as well.
Then the beast turned it's head toward us and it let out a deep growl that made my blood ran cool. It was different his time in the sense that it was directed at me. It was completely different indeed. It glared at me with it's eyes, it curled its lips upward to show a set of brilliant white sharp teeth.
Kristoff, still gripping my elbow, moved me a step closer to him. The wolf responded by rising its white fur on its end, making it appear larger and even more frighteningly, clearly unhappy at this. It was then that I noticed something. Its eyes weren't trained on Kristoff and me like I thought before. It wasn't even on Sven. It was directed at the space between Kristoff and I, and if I had to guess, at his hand touching me. Maybe it just wanted me since I supposed I was an easier target.
"Kristoff let me go.", I said under my breath. If that was the case, then I hoped it would take me and let Kristoff be.
"No way.", He under his breath, his chocolate brown eyes on the canine in front of us. "We stick together, remember?"
"Just do it.", I said, but it wasn't working. Then I came up with something. "I have a plan.", I lied. Good thing he wasn't looking at me, or else he would have seen my lying face. I was never good at concealing. "Just trust me."
Kristoff gulped and gave a sight nod. With that, he let go and took half a step away from me. I took two steps away from him in returned. The wolf's lips curled downward, but still in its alarm posture. I took even more steps away from them and nodded in Kristoff direction, hoping he would follow my lead. He nodded. He and Sven took steps away steps away as well.
The wolf still standing where it was, started walking slowly toward me. I tried to back off, but fortunately due to my clumsiness, I ended up falling down on my behind. Not good. I thought I tried keep calm as the animal approached my closer. I closed my eyes, but nothing happened.
I peeked one eye open to see what was stopping my demise. It was looking at me with intelligent eyes. It crouched forward and started sniffing my face. Okay, now this was weird. I was scared that it might smell the fear that I was certain was present in my system. But I didn't feel threaten by it anyway. Something told me it wouldn't hurt me.
I took a deep breath and put my hand forward. I slowly and cautiously moved my hand toward its muzzle. I expected it to bite my hand off, but it just leaned forward as well. When I made contact with it, it felt cold. This animal was cold.
After about a minute of just keeping my hand on it. I gently began to pet it. It growled, but it didn't scare me. It was more of a growl of approval. Then it suddenly moved forward and opened its mouth. I saw those shape white teeth inside, and I shut my eyes.
Instead of biting teeth, I felt something wet and cold slide up the side of my face. Wait, what? I stared at it in disbelief. How could this animal like me? I subconsciously grabbed its big head. I expected it to finch away from my touch, but it didn't. It nuzzled itself into my hand and I smiled.
Knowing it wouldn't hurt me, I stood up. "Hey, Kristoff looks like he's friendly!"
"That's a death animal Anna!", Kristoff said clinging to Sven. Sven didn't seemed as freaked out as Kristoff, so I took that as a good sign.
"No, he isn't.", I said and to prove it, I crouched and gave it a hug. It nuzzled into it. "Come on Kristoff, don't be such a chicken!"
"I'll have you know that I, Kristoff Bjorgman, am not a chicken.", He puffed up his chest and came closer to me. As soon as he did that, the animal shot him a glare and growled. Kristoff nervously backed off. "Anna...", He warned and I couldn't help but grin.
"It's okay Wolfy.", I said to it. "Kristoff's a friend.", I informed it. It have understood what I said because it stopped growling, but still kept its eyes on Kristoff, daring him to prove otherwise.
"We should probably keep going.", I said to him and he nodded. His face still pale in fear.
Then I turned to the white wolf next to me. It was so huge. "Listen, I want to thank you so much for saving me.", I said to it and I think I saw a hint of gratitude in it, but that was just wishful thinking. I looked into its eyes again and this time I really took note of its eyes. It was bright sapphire blue. Subconsciously, I grabbed its head and inspected them closer. "Where did you get those eyes?", I thought out loud. I've only seen this blue shade before. And it was on one person and she was on the North Mountain.
Then howls broke in the distance. That beautiful noise again. Only this time, it sounded a bit more cheerful in a way. Like it was calling, instead of mourning a death. Then the white one in front of me took a couple steps back and howled loud as to let the others know it was here. More howls came in response. Then it started running toward the sounds. Stopping on the edge of the woods, it turned its head to look at me uncertainly.
"Go on.", I said encouragingly. "They're waiting for you.", I waved it away and it disappeared into the woods.
"Anna.", Kristoff said gazing where it had disappeared.
"Yeah?", I said.
"Let's go.", With that we kept walking toward the mountain and to my sister. I was certain we wouldn't have to worry about animals attacking us. Not that with that one keeping them in check. I wondered if Elsa had anything to do with the white wolf. But her magic can't do that. Can it?
"You never told me you were a wolf girl.", Kristoff commented as we were walking. It was now morning and the sun was peaking over the mountains.
"You never told me you were a reindeer boy.", I countered with a smirk.
"I didn't think I had to. It seemed pretty self explanatory to me.", He resorted.
"Whatever.", I murmured.
"It seemed really fond of you.", He commended.
"I know. That was pretty weird, but I'm not complaining. We were in a real pickle back there.", I said.
"Can I ask you a question?", He asked out of nowhere.
"You've been asking questions since we met.", I pointed out.
"So is that a yes?", He said hopeful and I nodded.
"Okay, so it's an important honest question.", He said. "Please don't laugh or think I'm stupid."
"Depends on what you're asking.", I stated.
"It's about your sister Elsa.", He said.
"Alright.", I said cautiously. "What about her?"
Kristoff started blushing. "Is she...no wait- I mean what does she..."
"Just spill it Kristoff. What is it?", I said impatiently. If he asks if she's evil, I was so gonna smack him.
"What does she look like?", He blurted out.
I looked at him dumbfounded. "You don't know?"
"To be fair, the gates have been locked for the last thirteen years, and I've live most of my life on the mountains.", He defended himself. "And it's not like you royalty show your face every other day."
"But what about when the gates reopened?", I asked. "If I remember correctly Elsa gave a small introduction speech to everyone in the courtyard.", I wasn't there when it happened because I was outside the gates and meeting Hans for the first time.
"I was going to go in, but there was too many excited people and it was crowded and whatnot, so I bailed out.", Kristoff said. "I prefer the peace."
"I would too, except I've had a little too much of it while the gates were closed.", I said. "Once I get it out of my system, I'll probably want some peace and quiet, but that's still a long way to go."
"Yeah, I guess you're right.", Kristoff admitted. "So does she look like you or something?"
"Not really.", I said as I thought about it. "She looks more like my mother. The queen before her. I don't suppose you know how she looked like?"
"Yeah, I do actually.", Kristoff sighed in thought and then smiled stupidly. "Yeah...she was very beautiful... And kind. And caring. And perfect. And did I mention she was beautiful?", I looked at his face and- Did he just swoon?
I felt my face get hot and only then did Kristoff get back to earth. He cleared his throat loudly. "I me- mean yes. I knew what she looked like.", He was redder than me.
I didn't say anything. I mean, what do you say to that? "Anna please say something."
"Were you crushing on my mother or something?", I asked already knowing the answer. Okay, I've just reached a new level of awkwardness. Never in my life did I think I would be having a conservation about this in in a thousand years.
"No!", He said too quickly, not looking at me. I felt a tug of sympathy when he did that.
"You can tell me, you know? I won't judge.", I said softly trying to be as nice as possible when you find out your friend liked your mother.
"Okay, um yeah.", He admitted. "But it was only because she was the first person I remember who was ever a decent human being toward me. And I was only fourteen at the time and everything was so confusing at that age. The fact that she was very pretty didn't help my case either."
"Oh um okay. It's fine, really. Don't worry about it. My mother was the best.", I agreed and he looked relieved at my reaction. "So just out of curiosity, how did you meet her?", I said after a minute of silence.
"Oh, um you see my uh friends asked me to personally deliver a letter to the royal family about six years ago.", He said. "So anyway, I get to the castle and the guards wouldn't let me in."
"Yeah, that's the Royal Guard for ya.", I said smiling. Even I couldn't get past them.
"Anyway, to make long story short, I snuck in and she was in the courtyard wiping snow from herself and there was this little girl-", He stopped talking abruptly and stared at me with wide eyes. The scene he was describing sounded very familiar and I stared back suddenly seeing the younger version of himself in my mind. The blonde hair, the clothing, even Sven walking beside me at the moment. All those pieces connecting.
"Do you remember how the g- girl looked liked", My voice sounded raspy to my ears, but he didn't say anything about it.
"Yeah, she had strawberry blonde hair. Twin braids over her small shoulders.", He smiled. "And I think I saw some light freckles here.", He pinched my right cheek and for some reason I let him. "And here.", He pinched my other hot cheek. "And on her nose.", He patted the area above my nose with his index finger. "And she was kind of a runt at the time.", He chuckled.
"I'll have you know, I wasn't that small.", I said blushing hard, and playfully smacked him on the arm. "How did we just now realize this?"
"Probably because you traded in your cuteness for a more beauti-", He suddenly stopped himself. He face palmed himself. "I meant to say that you're...to say that I think...you've grown! That's it! You've really grown in the last six years. That is what I meant to say."
I wanted to tease him but decided to just spare him of farther humiliation. "Anyway, you wanted to know what my sister looked like.", I said to changed the awkward subject and he jumped into it.
"Yes! Of course, so she's like your mother?" He asked.
"The resemblance is kind of scary actually.", I mumbled. "But in a good way.", I quickly added. "Except Elsa is has platinum blonde hair that looks almost white sometimes. She's also got blue eyes and she's like really pale too.", I finished.
"Okay, I think I have a mental picture of her now.", Kristoff said.
"That's great then.", I said as were walking up.
We were on top of a mountain now and the view from up here was breath taking. I look down toward the beautiful powdery snow down on everything. In the distance, I could make out the familiar castle I wandered the empty halls in.
The first thing I noticed about it was that it looked so tiny and foreign from all the way up here. I wondered if they could see me, but I didn't think it was likely. It amazed me to think what a big world I lived in. huge castle I grew up in seemed so tiny and insignificant. I knew for sure that when I get back, I won't be able to look at everything the same way ever again.
The second thing I noticed was that it was covered in snow. I knew that was to be expected. It was snowing light when I left, but it was still different to actually seeing it. "Arendelle...", I whispered under my breath.
"It's completely frozen.", Kristoff, who I had forgotten, said next to me.
"Yeah, it is.", I agreed. "But it's okay. My sister Elsa will thaw it."
"Will she?", He asked. This was the first time I thought about whether or not Elsa would actually want to thaw it.
"Ye- yes. Of course.", I said, but I didn't feel confident about it anymore because the seeds of doubt were now planted in my head. "Now come on.", I said before Kristoff could say more. "This way to the North Mountain?", I pointed to the opposite of where Arendelle was.
Kristoff chuckled softly. Before I could question it, he put his hand under my pointed one and moved it upwards. "This way."
Then I noticed the North Mountain. It looked so far! And high too. I sighed. This is gonna take forever.
Kristoff noticing this said, "Don't worry about it Anna. It isn't as far as it looks. We'll be there in three, maybe four hours tops."
"Yeah, okay.", I said without much heart in it.
"Don't be so down your Highness.", He teased, smiling. I knitted my eyebrows together when he looked at me expectantly.
"What?", I asked confused.
He had an expressions of bewilderment. "Seriously Anna!", He waved his hands in the air. "You have no sense of humor."
"Excuse me sir, I have tons of sense of humor.", I said in mock anger while at the same time trying to figure out the joke I missed. Then I got it. It was with the whole 'down' and 'Highness'. "It's not my fault you can't tell a joke."
"I can tell the best jokes.", Kristoff said. "Tell her Sven.", He nudge the happy reindeer next to him. I looked at Sven and it scoffed. I looked at Kristoff for the reindeer's translation.
"Come on Sven! It's supposed to be you and me against the world.", Kristoff said annoyingly and I laughed.
"Kristoff, even your reindeer thinks you're unfunny.", I chuckled.
"Says the one laughing.", He resorted with victory in his eyes and I rolled my eyes.
"Aren't you special?", I said, crossing my arms as we continued up the mountain.
About an hour later, we were making excellent progress. We were currently passing a winter wonderland. There was this bald willow tree that ice droplets on its branches. There was a mini waterfall that was currently frozen into a crystal clear ice. The sun was out and it was making all the ice sparkle in different colors.
"Whoa...", I said to no one. Sven got his antlers tangled in the branches and started to happily shake his head. He looked really happy at the sound it made. Like little bells. "I keep forgetting how beautiful winter is."
Kristoff stared in aw and nodded his head in agreement. "I know what you mean."
"Yeah, it really is beautiful isn't it?", I heard a voice say. Kristoff and I looked at each other in confusion, and then at Sven behind us. As if he was the one talking, but that was impossible. I was certain Kristoff would have known is Sven could speak by now. "But it's so white. You know, how about a little color? Must we bleach the joy out of it all. I'm thinking like maybe some crimson, chartreuse.",
"Who?", I whispered to Kristoff and he shook his head. I looked over to Sven again and he looks just confused as Kristoff and I.
"How about yellow? No, not yellow. Yellow and snow? Brrr, no go.", That weird voice was getting louder and closer?
Suddenly, there's a snowman between Kristoff and I. "Am I right?", Oh my god, it talked!
I scream and my reflexes take over, causing me to kick its head off into the air above me. It landed in Kristoff's arms.
"Hi.", It said happily to Kristoff.
"You're creepy.", He replied before tossing away from him and toward me.
"I don't want it!", I said, still freaked by the fact that the head was talking. I tossed it back to him
"Back at ya!", He threw it back. It kind of looked like the game of hot potato I never played.
"Please don't drop me.", The snow head said to me as I threw it back.
"Don't!", I yelled at Kristoff a second before he threw it again to me.
"Come on, it's just a head.", He said.
"No!", I yelled as I caught again,
"Alright, we got off to a bad start.", The head said to me in my hands. The snowman's body, which I had forgotten about, was running toward me, waving its stick arms.
"Ew, ew, the body!", In my panic, slammed the head into its body. The snowman stood with its head upside down. And it looks confused at us. I now get a more clear look at it. It was composed of three pieces. The head, the middle, and the bottom. There were two small feet on the bottom that allowed it to walk.
"Wait, what am I looking at right now? Why are you hanging off the earth like a bat?", It waved its hands at us for emphasize. I felt guilty for doing that to him, but in my defense, it's not everyday you encounter a talking snowman.
"Okay, wait one second.", I said as I got on my knees and set the head the way it was before I kicked it off. I wondered if it caused him pain, but I was given no signs of it.
"Oooh! Thank you!", He said happily and it brought a smile to my face.
"You're welcomed.", I said.
"Now I'm perfect.", He said with a goofy smile. His face gave me an idea.
"Well, almost.", I said and reached into the bag that was still in Kristoff's hand and pulled out a carrot. I tried to gently put it on it's head, but because I'm an idiot, I ended burying it all the way in his head.
"Woo! Head rush.", He exclaimed.
"Oh god, I'm sorry. I just- I um, are you okay?", He didn't seemed in any pain, but I still still guilty.
"Are you kidding me? I'm wonderful!", He said happily as he crossed his eyes to at the tiny piece of carrot sticking out of the front of his head. "So cute! It's like a little baby unicorn."
I shrugged and pushed the bulk of carrot sticking out on the back of his head forward. He smiled wide when he saw his big nose. "Oh, I love it even more!"
"Alright, it's start this thing.", He clapped his stick arms together. "Hi everyone, I'm Olaf and I like warm hugs."
"Olaf?", I said out aloud. Where have I heard that before? Olaf then opened his arms wide for a hug, and the scene was familiar as well. Then it hit. "That's right, Olaf.", That was the name of the snowman Elsa and I built as kids on that awful night. I had forgotten about that. It happened so many years ago. I feel old now.
"And you are?", He asked me. I guess he didn't remember me, but it made sense. He wasn't alive back then.
"Oh, um I'm Anna.", I introduced myself to him. "That's Kristoff.", I pointed to Kristoff who was still staring wide eyed at Olaf. "And that's Sven.", I pointed to the reindeer.
"Nice to meet you guys!", He waved at them. And I stared at him curiously.
"Olaf, did Elsa build you?", I asked him.
"She sure did.", He said proudly. "She was so cool, even gave me a special job."
"What might that job be?", I asked.
"Told me to keep guard.", He said. "But I didn't think she was serious because she was smiling too much."
"Elsa was smiling?", I felt jealously at that. When was the last time I saw her smile. Almost never, that's when.
"Yeah, her smile was so pretty.", He said with dazed eyes.
"I don't suppose you can take us to her.", I said to him.
"Sure, I can.", Olaf said confidently. "Why?"
"I'll tell you why, we need Elsa to bring back summer.", Kristoff spoke for the first time.
"Oh, I love summer!", Olaf cheered. Why did that not surprised me? Didn't Elsa once say that summer was her favorite as well?
"Hey Olaf, what's your favorite color?", I asked.
"Blue, why?", He asked. And isn't Elsa's favorite color blue as well? This was weird.
"No reason.", I said quickly. "Just answer me this, who am I?"
"You're Anna. Elsa's little sister.", He answered and it made my heart skip a beat. Did this snowman know everything there was to know about Elsa?
"Anyway, come on.", He grabbed my hand with his stick hands. "Let's go bring back summer!"
I chuckled at his enthusiasm. "I'm coming.", I said as he dragged me up the mountain. "You coming Kristoff?"
"Sure thing.", He said as he followed us up.
Hans POV
A thin layer of ice coated everything. Even the floor, making it easier to slip. People huddled around small weak fires. Most of them were inside keeping warmed and others were outside like me. You could practically see the high anxiety amongst the villagers and guests.
"Cloak. Does anyone need a cloak", I walked around with a pile in hands, passing to whoever needed one. Then I saw that girl from the other day. She was dressed in black instead of pink this time. Her short brown hair under her cap.
"Looks like Arendelle is indebted to you, your Highness.", She said. Damn right, you are.
"I'm just taking care of Arendelle the way Princess Anna would want.", I replied. A guard who was walking by tool the pile of cloaks from my hands. "Pass these out.", I ordered and he nodded.
"I also think Anna would want that.", She agreed with me. I wondered again who the hell was she.
I was about to ask her when the Duke of Weselton approached me. "Prince Hans!", He addressed.
"I'll leave you gentlemen to talk.", She curtseyed and walked away into the castle. I wanted to ask her to stay, but I had the Duke to deal with first.
"Yes Sir?", Too bad I needed to respect him. He was really getting on my nerves.
"Prince Hans, are we just expected to sit here and freeze while you give away all of Arendelle's tradable goods?", He said in his most demanding annoying voice possible. Always a materialistic business man where money comes first. Just like my 'loving and caring' father.
I fought the urge to roll my eyes at him. He's been giving me a hard whenever he had the chance. "Princess Anna has given her orders and-"
"And that's another thing.", He interrupted. "Has it dawned on you that your princess may be conspiring with a wicked sorceress to destroy us all?", He rudely suggested. I had actually thought of that yesterday. But I had Anna's heart in my hand and along with all her intentions. She was as pure as they come, and that probably hadn't even occurred to her pretty little head.
I glared at him, my eyes showing their true colors to him, but he's too much of an idiot to figure it out. "Do not question the Princess. She left me in charge, and I will not hesitate to protect Arendelle from treason.", I threatened him.
And he had the pathetic nerve to be offended. "Treason?!"
I was about to tell him off when I gasps from the people and the hoofs of a single horse rushing into the courtyard. Anna's back, I thought as I turned to face her. Only to find the horse without its rider. What the hell?
I grabbed its reins and calmed it down. I always had a way with animals. "Whoa! Whoa! Whoa, boy. Easy. Easy."
I looked up at the mountains as I listen the crowds murmur about Anna's whereabouts. She could have gotten lost and frozen up on the snowy mountains. This was my fault. I should have made someone gone with her, or should have at least made sure she was prepared and well equipped for the journey.
I still needed Anna alive to obtain the throne of Arendelle. I wasn't too familiar with Arendelle, but I knew they had some relatives who would be more than happy to fill in. I needed to marry Anna first, that would secure it for me. Then she could go die for all I care.
I looked at the panicked faces of everyone and saw that they were all looking to me for guidance. That pleased me. But they were still loyal to Anna and that made me realized I needed her more than what I originally thought.
"Princess Anna is in trouble.", I called out to them. It was the truth. "I need volunteers to go with me to
find her!"
Soon many volunteers were offering up their services. Some from Arendelle and others from other lands. Nice men they are.
"I volunteer two men, my Lord!", The Duke called out to me. That scheming little weasel. Letting others do his dirty work. No way would the Duke be doing to help Elsa. He had made his views on her very clear. He wanted her dead.
And frankly, so did I. If I was to become king, I needed to get rid of her. Especially her. She was the heir after all. And what better way than to have the Duke's men do it for me? I'll let those two thugs come along.
If they do kill her, Anna will be upset and I'll be there to comfort her, and I'll also have a reason to target the Duke and shut his annoying mouth once and for all. If all that was successful, then I don't think I'll even need that small fleet that would be here tomorrow. This was a great plan. I thought I rode past the gates and across the fjord.
A/N: Would have had it up last night, but I was working on other things. Hope you're enjoying it. I'll have the next one up whenever I have free time, which I now have to make:/
Batman1809: Good to hear you like those wolves :) Yeah I know what you mean. It kind of confused me too, and I'm the one who wrote it. Anyway have a good one.
