CHAPTER 16

Tobias had taken Mason out of my hands and allowed me to get dressed quickly. Swiftly, I ran a brush through my blonde hair and then pecked Tobias on the lips and hurried down into the living room.

Christina stood in the middle of the room and as soon as she saw me, she practically tackled me to the ground in a huge hug.

"Oh my god, Tris, look at you! You're skinny again!" she said patting my stomach cheekily. I grinned back.

"Too skinny, in my opinion." A voice came from the stair way. I saw Tobias walking in with our son in his arms.

Christina's eyes instantly fell on the small bundle and her eyes lit up with a huge grin. "Oh my god," she whispered, her hand flying to her open mouth. "Is that the Little Eaton?"

"This is Mason." Tobias offered and placed Mason into her arms. He glided up to me, wrapping his arms around my waist. I glanced up at him, smiling and he smiled back, placing a kiss on my forehead.

"And oh my, Beatrice Prior, is that an engagement ring?" she exclaimed. I held my hand out for her to see the beautiful ring Tobias had given me out in the middle of nowhere. Tobias took Mason out of her arms and then she was all over me.

Christina and I were so into our conversation that we were completely unaware of someone knocking at the door, but luckily Tobias heard and soon there was voices echoing up the hallway. Uriah appeared by my fiancé's side and before he was ready for it, I was squeezing all of the air out of him.

He pulled away, his lips curling up at the corners sheepishly. "Hey, Tris. Look at you, huh? Now engaged and have a little kid."

I grinned up at him. "Yep," I said, popping the 'p'. "So what's been happening here while we've been gone?"

"Absolutely nothing. No one's really been here and you guys were gone for ages, I'm not surprised you had the Little Eaton out there. But I have to ask you, you guys were only out there for just a couple of weeks after nine months and this little guy looks too young to have been born only a week ago. So, when did you have him?"

I held my arms out for Tobias to give Mason to me. I pressed my lips to his forehead briefly and responded, "Yeah, he was a month premature, but he's all right—perfect, in fact."

We sat around the dining table, sipping glasses of tea all throughout the day and by the night had come around, I was exhausted. Tobias and I said goodbye to Christina and Uriah before kissing Mason goodnight. He was sleeping in his own room tonight, so Tobias and I could have some time alone.
Just as my head had hit the pillow and Tobias' arms had wrapped securely around my waist, there was another knock at the door. Frowning, I sat up and made a move to get out of bed. Tobias also sat up and said that he would get it, but I reassured him that I could do it.

My feet hit the cold tiles with every tired step I took towards the door. As my hand touched the doorknob, I tried for a smile on my face, hoping that whoever it was better have good explanations for getting me out of bed and away from Tobias' warm arms.

When the door swung open, the smile slipped from my face because the person I was definitely not expecting to see stood there.

***PAGE BREAK***

"Hello, Beatrice." My brother, Caleb, greeted.

At first I couldn't help but stare at the brother who had betrayed me, who had turned his back on me and gone side by side with my enemy. Finding my courage once more, I straightened and glared at him through slitted eyes. "What the hell are you doing here?"

"How nice to see you, too." He looked at me expectantly but when I only just stood there, still staring at him, he scowled. "Well, aren't you going to let me in?"

My mouth dropped open at this. What I wanted to do was slam the door in his face and go cuddle with Tobias and just forget about the whole encounter; I wanted to scream and cry at him; and then the dauntless side kicked in, I wanted to punch him in the face, make him hurt, the way he made me hurt. Instead I whispered a string of three words which mad both of us stop in our tracks, "How could you?"

Caleb stared at me for what felt like hours and made me want to start pulling at my hair. When he finally opened his mouth to respond, an all too familiar voice, which made the blood drain from my face, spoke, "Tris? Who is it?" Tobias stopped in his tracks as soon as his gaze landed on my brother. His face suddenly contorted and his instructor expression snapped on with a look of uncontrollable anger in the background. "What are you doing here?" He demanded.

Caleb hesitated a moment, his eyes flickering nervously from me to Tobias, who was like a Rottweiler, ready to attack at my command. "Just let me explain." He pleaded.

"Explain what?" I questioned, curious as to what he would want to he would like to enlighten me on.
I held my breath, waiting for his answer, hoping that it would be what I hoped it would be. But even if his answer was understandable, would I ever be able to forgive him? "Explain why I did what I did."

My breath that I had been holding came out shaky as I heard the words I was hoping he would say.
