"You gonna to talk to me yet?" I asked Bo sheepishly as she stuffed more clothes into the suitcase for tomorrow's trip.
Her eyes whipped around to face me, analyse me, punish me a little more. "What went through your mind Tamsin? Why the hell would you put a five year old in a cupboard? What if she had an asthma attack and couldn't call for help?" the barrage of questions came one after another as I tightened my jaw at the infliction of each word.
"Firstly Sif doesn't have asthma and Sif wasn't exactly Sif. What are you trying to say anyway, that I'm a bad mother?" I began to instigate another argument, five thousand percent done with this shit.
"Nobody is saying that Ta-"
I cut her off, anger radiating from every inch of me that we were diverting away from the main point here. "...because if you taught her how to control Baby Satan, maybe I wouldn't be walking on eggshells every time my kid throws a damn tantrum." I seethed, throwing a pair of Elin's baby socks in the suitcase before storming downstairs to sulk in my armchair with a stiff drink or nine.
"Oh, so you're saying I'm a bad mother? It took me years before I could even begin to understand how to control Dark Bo and you want me to train a five year old to do it?" she called to me over the balcony as I flopped into my seat.
"Yeah Bo, that's what I'm asking you to do… before she ends up hurting someone or worse, killing them." I sighed, lowering the remote as I lifted my gaze to meet her as she stared at me over the railing with those big brown eyes, uncertainty shining out of them as we faced our biggest challenge with Sif yet.
"I changed my mind Mama." I heard a little voice break the silence, closing my eyes as I immediately knew the little blonde haired, blue eyed tadpole it belonged to before I kicked myself for not checking she was asleep in her bedroom before we started this conversation.
"What do you mean you change your mind?" Bo asked gently, picking up the little one at her side as tears swelled in her big blue eyes. The sniffle that escaped her lips broke my heart as I waited for her to say what I knew was about to come out of her little innocent mouth.
"I don't want to be a monster anymore." she cried, wrapping her arms around her Mommy's shoulder as I stood up from the sofa, staring at them helplessly waiting for the words to come to me. "I don't want to kill anyone Mommy."
She whimpered as Bo comforted her in only a way she could. "I was really scared to when I knew there was a part of me I couldn't control when I got angry, but we'll fix it baby. You know how you and Mama practice Valkyrie stuff? Why don't me and you practice Succubus stuff? We can get ice cream afterwards." she gave her a trademark warm delicious grin, instantly making everything better only the way Mommy can.
"I hope you're referring to demon controlling stuff and not that thing you do with your hands when it's my birthda-"
"Demon controlling stuff covered it Tamsin."
"Good, I don't want Sif learning any other succubusstuff until she's at least thirty-eight." I mumbled.
"Am I in trouble for being bad-fae Mommy?" Sif asked quietly - trying to whisper into Bo's ear, as if she was worried she might remind me she burnt down the living room if I overheard. Like I'm forgetting that any time soon. I don't know when the dynamic changed between Bo and I but it's like we take it in turns playing good cop, bad cop with the kids.
"You're not bad-fae, Mama's dark too remember and she fights bad guys and helps people." Bo explained with a smile. "When you grow up you'll be just as big and brave as Mama."
"Yeah and I also don't set fire to the accent cushions when I don't get my own way." I said sternly, waving the burnt cushion at the side of me in front of them both for effect. "No cookies for a month and I'm cancelling Netflix when we get back from Valhalla unless you're on your best behaviour when we visit grandma."
Sif looked at me with challenge in her eyes, that mischievous look that said she wasn't taking any repercussions or punishment lying down, especially not the cookie related kind. Before I could so much as get another sentence out of my lips, tears began to dribble down her rosy cheeks again as she kicked up the cuteness. "Mommy, is Mama going to put me in the cupboard again?" she cried, her bottom lip trembling as she had Bo eating out the palm of her hand.
"No baby, why don't we have a girls sleepover in my bed? Mommy's putting Mama under the stairs as punishment tonight for being bad-fae." Bo sing songed in a cheery voice whilst throwing red hot daggers at me with her eyes.
"She's faking it!" I yelled, at this point I was having to pretend to be angry, if anything I was beaming with pride internally at the little evil genius my baby was growing into.
"Mommy if I go downstairs Mama will get me, will you get the snacks and cookies instead?" Sif tried to manipulate Bo as I wondered whether my wife would bite the bait.
"Okay now you're pushing it, get your sippy cup from your bedroom and get in mine and Mama's bed." Bo told her with an edge of sternness to her voice.
"Yes Mommy." she huffed, running back to get her juice.
"Seriously? Where am I going to sleep tonight? We've got to be up at 7am tomorrow, you know to go to my old, old, old mother's coronation." I huffed, realising I definitely wasn't getting any sweet release tonight as I threw Bo's slip up from earlier in her face.
"You can sleep on the sofa watching one of your movies on that TV you definitely didn't steal from Target whilst you had the kids with you." Bo inflicted each word, not letting go of this like a dog who had a juicy bone in it's mouth.
"Seriously, this again? I didn't steal the damn TV." I bit my tongue, knowing the true story as to how we acquired every magnificent UltraHD pixel of the 65in screen.
"Fuck. You." she mouthed extra quietly as I caught a glimpse of Sif skipping into our bedroom with a teddy bear under one arm and her sippy cup in the other, before Bo quickly followed her inside and closed the bedroom door.
Great, this was just great.
I watched as much Real Housewives of Brazenwood as I could handle before grabbing a bottle of formula and creeping upstairs around 9.30pm to feed Elin as her hungry mews filled the house. Careful to keep my steps quiet across the creaking floor boards as I imagined Bo and Sif curled up together asleep ready for tomorrow.
"Hey funny girl, what's all that noise for?" I quietly cooed over Elin's crib, admiring her curly dark baby hair. Bo didn't have any baby pictures so I couldn't be one hundred percent certain, but I'm pretty sure Elin and Bo are identical.
I picked my baby out of the crib and sat in the rocking chair with her in my arms, feeding her the bottle as she stared lazily back up at me, her little hands reaching out towards me as I held her closer.
"I used to hold your big sister like this when she was a baby, in fact I made her promise me one night that she'd stay this little forever. Now look at her, setting fire to your Mommy's fancy cushions that are too little and have too many sequins to be comfy." I sighed. "Please don't ever grow up Baby-Bo, I don't think I can handle two big girls running around causing trouble like their Mama." I smiled painfully. "The quicker you grow up, the less time I have to protect you both before you start fighting your own battles."
Elin hungrily sucked the last of her formula as I settled down to tell one of my famously inappropriate bedtime stories, like the time I put fart powder in uncle Dyson's coffee the morning of Hale and Kenzi's wedding. However small rasping knuckles against the door interrupted me.
"What are you doing awake?" I asked gently as Sif pushed the door open.
"Mommy sent me to come and get you, she heard you on Elin's walkie-talkie." she explained, walking over to get a better look at her baby sister as she leaned over to kiss her forehead. I turned to look at Elin's baby monitor, realising it was on and Bo had heard my entire mopey monologue. "I'm sorry I was naughty earlier Mama." Sif frowned, leaning up to kiss my cheek as I hugged her little body.
"Mommy will teach you how to control some of your other special powers, you didn't mean to make a mess." I smiled, both of my babies safe in my arms as I finally let myself relax and look forward to taking my growing girls home for the weekend. "You're not bad-fae Sif, we're all naughty sometimes. Just always remember to tell me first if you've been naughty so we can fix it."
"...like the time I borrowed the TV from Target and you put it in the car for me because it was too heavy?" Sif thought aloud, forcing me to grin as I decided my babies were still far too little to fight their own battles without me.
"Yeah just like that time sweet nose." I laughed, placing a passed out Elin back in her crib.
"...and you never, ever snitched on me even though Mommy was super mad we got the TV." she considered for a moment as I picked her up and kissed her blonde head.
"You're my daughter and I'll always, always protect you; even if that means not snitching on you to Mommy." I tried to explain as simply as possible for my five year old before walking down the corridor towards my bedroom with her on my hip. "So, can Mama join your girls sleepover tonight with Mommy?" I pretended to wonder aloud.
Sif furrowed her face in consideration. "Mommy said if you want to watch Netflix with us you have to get the snacks." she said with all the seriousness of a heart attack.
"Oh okay, well you go get in bed and I'll be up in a minute." I replied, putting her down so she could jump in my bed.
"Don't fall for it Tamsin, she doesn't need any Oreos." Bo called through the door as Sif practically flew into the bedroom to avoid my annoyed gaze. I followed her in and closed the door behind us all as Cars 2 played in the background, I could practically recite word for word the dialogue Sif had made me watch it so many times. "Who's the dummy falling for her tricks now?" Bo asked, rolling over to face me as Sif laid curled up at her side.
"Wait, you knew all along she was faking how upset she was earlier?" I asked, shocked.
"Of course I knew she was trying to get out of her punishment, she's your daughter too afterall." she laughed, opening the duvet for me as I clambered into join them.
"I'm sorry I was such an asshole earlier." I whispered, leaning over to kiss her lips as she moved closer to snuggle my side. I wrapped my arm around her as we all settled in to watch some more Lightning McQueen with Sif contently glued to the screen between us.
"Hey you know what's really funny." Bo half laughed, whispering to me. "How sorry you're going to be when you and Sif take that TV back to Target on Monday and pay for it." she deadpanned, staring me in the eyes as I looked at her like a rabbit caught in headlights.
"I told you! I didn't steal the TV." I tried to reason with her.
"No, you just helped Sif because it was too heavy for her… right?" Bo probed, as I suddenly pretended to be asleep avoiding any and all conversation about this. How the hell did she find out? I wondered, keeping my eyes scrunched close before nudging Sif with my foot to copy me so she could stay out of the firing line too.
"Oh let me guess, you've both just suddenly fallen asleep? How coincidental…" Bo muttered as I added a snore for extra effect.
"We're not really asleep Mommy, we're just pretending so you won't put Mama under the stairs." Sif tried to helpfully explain, keeping her eyes clenched shut as I nudged her with my foot again to keep quiet.
"Thank you baby but I already gathered that, didn't I Mama?" Bo turned to ask me, I felt her eyes burning into me.
I opened my eyes and pretended to yawn, hoping I could still save this. "Hmm? What were you two talking about, I must of closed my eyes." I yawned again, stretching my arms. "Wow would you look at the time Bo, 9.45pm and you haven't even had a nap today. You should get some sleep my beautiful, amazing succub-"
"Save it Tamsin." Bo interrupted me, gently kissing my lips before leaning down to kiss Sif's head as she tried to lay as still as possible with her eyes clenched close, occasionally opening them to catch a peek at the TV. "You can stop pretending Sif, nobody is in trouble and nobody is going in the cupboard ever again. You and Mama are just going to go back to the store and pay for the TV." she sighed.
"That's okay Mommy, I only borrowed it for you anyways so you could watch Say Yes To The Dress whilst me and Mama watch Monster Trucks." she innocently smiled, breaking Bo's heart a little bit as she realised how sweet the thought was and more importantly why I couldn't snitch.
"Well everybody get some sleep anyway, Grancacia is so excited to see us all." Bo yawned, her head resting on my shoulder as I turned the TV off and settled down too.
"Bo, how did you find out about the TV anyway?" I asked quietly, stroking her hair.
"The same way I know you put fart powder in Dyson's coffee and ruined his best man speech at Kenzi's wedding." Bo tiredly answered.
I paused for a minute, thinking on her words until it dawned on me.
Damn baby monitor.
