As Harry sat down at the table in front of Hermione, he set the tray of food down so that it lay between the two. He began naming all the foods while he took them off the tray and set them before their respective owners.
"My ham and cheese sandwich, your pea soup, my orange juice, and your coffee; one crème, two sugars," said Harry, and smiled.
"Thank you for lunch, Harry," she said before she started on her soup.
They made small comments on their meals while they ate. It was Harry's first time at Suzy's but he seemed to be enjoying himself. Hermione kept thinking of her outing with Lewis while she ate her pea soup. It was just as good now as it was a week ago. She let the liquid run down her throat as she enjoyed her time with a friend she hadn't talked to in weeks.
When they were both finished their meals, Hermione found the courage to tell Harry about her and Draco.
"Harry, do you ever think back to our Hogwarts days?" she asked.
"Yeah, sometimes. Whenever Ginny makes pumpkin pasties I always think of the Great Hall. And every time I look into the fireplace, I remember Sirius…" His voice cracked at his last words. Even after all these years, Harry was still sensitive to the topic of his godfather.
"Yeah," was all she could think of in response. They sat there quietly until she said, "What about the people?"
"Hermione, why are you bringing this up all of a sudden? Is there something you needed to tell me?"
She made an unnoticeable exhale. "Yes, actually. On the first day of work at my new company, I had time to explore the building and see everyone who works there. And, upon exploring, I found Draco." She paused to look at Harry, who shot his eyebrows up in surprise. "I know, I had the same reaction. I got to spend time with him Harry, and he's changed, believe it or not. He's… more of a gentleman now, he's mature." She paused again. "Aren't you going to say anything?"
"Hermione, I don't understand. Why are you telling me this?"
She took a deep breath in and told him about her and Ron agreeing to be friends, how much she liked Draco, a few of the times they spent together, and during that time, Harry never once looked disappointed. When she finished her story, he said, "I still don't get it."
"What don't you get?"
"Why you're telling me all this. You don't need my permission to date Draco, Mione, you're a big girl."
"I know, but you're my best friend and I thought you should know. I'm dating one of your enemies who made your life miserable and I didn't want you to get mad at me," she said, her voice growing quieter towards the end.
"Mione, I could never be mad at you. I've forgotten all he's done to me, and now I couldn't care less about what he did to me. We were children and we made mistakes, but as adults I've learned to move on. Yes, you're my best friend, and if he makes you happy then that's all that really matters to me."
She started to smile bigger than she ever had before, and she swore she could feel tears welling up in her eyes. "Harry, you have no idea how much it means to me to hear you say that. And I know this might be sudden, but I really want you two to meet. He's matured so much, you two could get along perfectly. And we should invite Ginny, too! We could all go on a double date!"
He started to laugh at his friend. "Whoa there, Hermione, of course I would love to meet this new Draco. But I'm not sure I can say the same for Ginny. You know how she is, she's not as forgiving as I am. She might still be mad at him for everything he's done. For now I think I should meet him alone, with you of course, before we ask Ginny to meet him as well."
"That sounds fine," she said with a smile.
They finished their drinks and walked back to Hermione's work. Harry walked with her all the way up to her cubicle and laughed at the pictures she had on her desk. Together, they walked to Draco's office, whose door was closed.
She knocked three times and waited a few moments before the door opened. Draco stood there with the doorknob in his hand and smiled brightly at the sight of his girlfriend. He looked over at Harry and a look of confusion quickly passed over his face. He brushed it off, opened the door wider and motioned for them to come inside.
Hermione stepped in first, and was surprised to see Cecelia in the chair in front of his desk. She was gathering her papers and nodded towards her and Harry as she left. Draco sat down in his chair behind the grand oak desk and looked between the two. "To what do I owe the pleasure?" he asked.
"Draco, you remember Harry."
He stood up. "Indeed I do." He reached out his hand, and Harry shook it with a friendly smile on his face. "Long time, no see."
"Yes, well, lovely Hermione here has informed me that you two are now dating, so it seems fitting that, as the best friend, I offer my congratulations and promise to beat the living Hell out of you if you ever break this girl's heart," Harry said with a huge smile.
"Whoa there, watch who you're calling lovely, okay? She's mine now," Draco replied with a wink. Hermione couldn't help but giggle, and she felt her cheeks redden. "I accept that you are very strong and built man, Harry, but I promise you that there will be no need for you to kill me."
"Yeah, there better not be," he replied.
They both looked at each other, and with playful grins they high-fived, and Hermione loved the fact that they were getting along so well.
"Since we all seem to be liking each other, why don't we go for dinner later?" she asked.
Draco looked cheerful. "I'll clear up my meetings tonight, tell them I have a family thing. There's only one so it shouldn't be a problem. Where to, exactly?"
"Oh, I know this really good place that serves Portuguese chicken near my house," Harry said. "Draco, you can pick up Hermione and then come over, she knows the way to my house. Come over at 7?"
They looked around the room and nodded at each other. Harry looked at his watch and said he had to leave because he had other things to do. As she watch Harry leave, she didn't notice Draco coming up from behind. He wrapped his arms around her and they swayed back and forth in the empty office.
He pecked her on the neck and she began to smile. "I'm really glad the two of you are getting along," she said. She moved away to put her bag down on one of the empty chairs and took off her coat. When she turned to face him again, she found that he was really close, and found herself staring into his chest.
He took a step forward, which made her take a step backward, and while he was trying to catch her, he was taking off his suit jacket and carelessly tossed it on the floor. How expensive that must be, and look how he handles it, she thought.
Now he cornered her, and her back was against the wall, foreheads were touching. Both his arms were encaging her, so she had no escape. Not that she wanted to, and she moved her head so that they were eye-to-eye.
"I'm a big boy now, I know how to be friendly." He moved his arms off the wall and onto her waist. He inched closer to her, spreading his legs so that almost every part of their bodies was now touching. Her arms automatically moved up to his neck, and she locked them there keeping eye contact with him the whole time.
His lips grazed her cheek, sending that familiar shiver through her body. He moved he mouth closer to hers, and just when she thought he was going to kiss her mouth, he lifted her head and kissed the base of her neck, multiplying the intensity of the shiver that went through her. He left a trail of kisses going to her ear, and she found it hard to breathe. Only when their mouths connect did she sigh and let go of her breath.
They stood there against the wall, her hand in his hair and his hand playing with the hem of her dress, when suddenly the phone on the desk rang. They separated mouths and Draco sighed with great disappointment. They released each other, and Hermione fixed her dress while he moved to answer the phone.
It only lasted about a minute, though, and he came back to her with his hands in his pockets. She hadn't moved from against the wall, so she remained still as he closed the distance between them again. His hands were on her waist, and she moved hers back to his neck while they were looking into each other's eyes
"Do you have to go?" she asked.
He nodded. "I have to get things ready for our launch in the fall. They need me to go to our other main office in Croydon to finalize some things, but I'll meet you at your front door in time to go to your friend's house, okay?"
She smiled and nodded. "I understand."
He smiled back pecked her forehead. They held each other for a moment longer before breaking apart at the sound of a knock on the door. He kissed her cheek one last time before he left his office and made his way to Croydon.
When Draco rang the doorbell for Harry's house, Hermione stood beside him and put her arm through his and rested her head against his shoulder. The night air was chilly and her three-quarter sleeved sweater did nothing to protect her from the breeze that gave her goose bumps, but being near Draco made her feel warmer.
Harry opened the door and smiled at the two in front of him. "I told Ginny I was having dinner with friends, so she left with her friends, too." He stepped out and locked the door behind him, then turned to face them. "Shall we get going?"
They all got in Harry's car; Harry in the driver's seat, Hermione beside him and Draco in the back behind Harry. They drove for about ten minutes before Harry pulled into a plaza and parked in front of a restaurant.
Over the course of the night, Hermione was surprised at how mature the two boys were acting. It was almost as if the past ten years had never happened, and that they were best friends for a long time. She was glad that her boyfriend and best friend were getting along. If Ginny saw how nice Harry was being, maybe she would be the same way, too.
