Chapter 14: Tobias

The last day of training for the force is finally here, the past six months have made me question how safe I actually feel here but today I stand in front of everyone and realize that they did better than I had ever expected.

The group stands in rows with their hands clasped behind their backs, each dressed in a black uniform and white armbands the insignia for the force stitched into each one.

"It has taken six months to get you here," Amar says. "We have done everything we could to train and prepare you for this new job. Go out there and protect our city and its citizens, make us proud."

The rest of the Pit starts stomping their feet as the new force starts celebrating together.

"You guys ready for the next class?" George jokes hoping down from the table.

Zeke and Shauna have been married for four months now, they just decided one morning to not wait any longer and asked George to do the ceremony that night. I can see them sitting off to the side talking happily, probably about the new prototype of the walking mechanism that's being built to help Shauna walk again. Zeke is probably more excited about that than she is.

I grab Tris' hand as she jumps off the table and start to walk towards our friends.

"Wait," For a moment I think something's wrong but her eyes are bright and happy. "I was thinking we could get married tomorrow."

"Really?" She nods and I pick her up in a hug. "Let's go tell everyone."

After telling our friends our plan I stand on the table again and ask all the recruits to meet us on the platform for a true celebration. We all run out and catch the train and as the new members of the force are celebrating and making noise I truly feel like Dauntless for the first time in months.

Finally, the train slows down and we all file off. It's sunset now so most people are already at home but those in the streets looks confused. We start running and the others follow, Zeke and Shauna make their way to the end point along with George and Amar and a few other Dauntless who wanted to take part.

I say good bye to Tris with a kiss and tell her to be careful and watch as she shuttles everyone up in the elevator. I meet the others at the end point and when I get there I can see the first person coming down on the zipline and smile. When he gets to the bottom we link arms and let him fall into us listening to his laugh and exhilaration.

Tris is last to come down on the line and her group of recruits wants to be the net for her and the rest of us watch as they joke and thank her for everything.

We decide that tonight will be the last night we ever sleep without each other. Zeke, Caleb, George, Amar, and I will spend the night drinking and doing manly things while Tris, Christina, Shauna, and Cara prepare for the wedding.

"I have to go get Christina, she'll kill me if I don't tell her what's going on."

"I should probably get Caleb and Evelyn too. I'll get Cara while I'm in the neighborhood." I wrap my arms around her middle and place my chin on her shoulder. "You're sure you want to do this tomorrow?"

Her head rests against my cheek. "Of course I do. It's just going to be so weird waking up tomorrow knowing that we're getting married."

"It's scary, but it'll be nice too."

We kiss deeply before going our separate ways to get our friends.

Caleb is shocked when I tell him but it's surprised, Cara however, is amazed and when I tell her that Tris and Christina will be waiting for her at the train platform she immediately runs to pack a bag. As I go to find my mother Caleb also packs his bag and agrees to meet me at the platform in twenty minutes.

Evelyn decided that she wanted to stay in an apartment near the Abnegation sector when she returned, I find her door and knock hesitantly. She's surprised to see me and when I tell her why I'm there she's more than excited, her eyes start to water and tears fall down her cheeks.

"My boy, my young Tobias is getting married."

My arms wrap around her and we hug while she cries quietly for a moment. "I want you to be there tomorrow morning."

"Of course!" Her tears have stopped and she smiles. "What should I wear? I assume this will be a Dauntless style wedding?"

"We're kind of mixing Dauntless and Abnegation, so there will be some crazy things and a lot of people but the ceremony will be Abnegation."

I stay for only a few more minutes before I have to leave and met Caleb and Evelyn promises me that she will be there in the morning.

"So, you're actually going to marry my sister." He says when we get on the train back to Dauntless.

"Problem?" He shakes his head and looks worried that I'll threaten him and I smile knowing that tomorrow he'll be my brother too and judging by what Tris has said he'll be a bigger pain in the ass too.

When we get back to Dauntless Caleb spends some time looking around uncomfortably and when Zeke runs up towards us carrying a few bottles of alcohol with George and Amar he seems even more uptight.

"Let's get this party started!" Zeke yells opening one of the bottles and drinking heavily.

Amar shakes his head but drinks as well. Out of the two of them George has always been the more outspoken and uproarious which I think makes them a good fit. Of course, neither is aware that I know they're even in a relationship and since they haven't said anything neither will I. But, it's still nice to know that they're both happy.

"You all know Caleb right?"

"Tris' brother, yeah we know him." Amar's eyes rest on Caleb for a moment and I start to think that they don't like him as much as me but he shrugs and turns away. "Haven't heard very good things about him."

Zeke shoves the bottle into my hand and I start to drink. "He did some shitty things to her."

"Is this really why you brought me here?" He says grabbing the bottle out of my hand. "To make fun of me?"

"Maybe a little bit." George says laughing.

"You're here because you sister is getting married in the morning and regardless of how she feels about you or how you treated her you're still her brother. Maybe you should be happy for her marrying someone like Four when she could have been marrying someone like Eric." The seriousness in Amar's voice sometimes creeps up on me and I have to take a step back.

But Caleb is up for the challenge and drinks even more, it seems like the words stick and within the hour Caleb is laughing with the rest of us and seems to be enjoying himself.

When we run into Tris and the other girls I'm happier than ever to see her and want to run back with her to the apartment. Instead I get to hug and kiss her briefly before Christina shuffles off with her for the rest of the night.

"So have you guys talked about kids?"

I shrug and Caleb looks like he's about to vomit just thinking about his sister having sex. "No, we haven't." I think about any of the kids that we'll have and I realize that while having children is the ultimate form of narcissism. "What about you and Shauna?"

"We're thinking two at least, but she wants to be able to walk before we start trying."

The next few hours are spent with us talking before deciding that we're too drunk to continue drinking and decide to sober up. "Who all is coming tomorrow?" George asks from the ground.

"You guys, the girls, and my mother."

Without warning Zeke jumps up and spreads his arms open. "Hey everyone!" He yells and when enough people are looking he smiles. "Four and Tris are getting married tomorrow at the Navy pier at eleven in the morning. Be there!"

"Do you really think that's a good idea?" I ask but several groups of people are already coming up to congratulate us.

When we finally decide to go to bed I'm mostly sobered up again and fall into bed as soon as I get to the apartment. Zeke and Caleb stay with me because the girls are in his apartment, he and I share the bed with a few pillows between us and Caleb stays on the couch.

The next morning Zeke wakes me up by jumping on the bed and I groan watching to sweep his legs out from under him. "I'm up!"

We shower and dress before leaving for breakfast and an hour before the ceremony we catch the train out towards the pier. All of the new force and most from Dauntless before the factions disbanded join us and make as much noise as possible when they see people in the street.

The pier is just as it always is and by the time everyone is settled in Cara pops her head around the corner and I know it's all about to start.
