Epilogue: Tobias
Five years later
"Maggie, stop fighting with your brother!" Tris yells from the other room.
The squeaky voice of my daughter fills the apartment trying to convince her mother that she's just practicing.
I laugh and duck in the room. "Maggie, listen to your mother. Your brother is too young to fight. If you want to practice, I'll help you."
"Tobias, she shouldn't be fighting at all."
But Maggie jumps into my arms and I place her on my shoulders. "I'll make it stop." I say with a kiss. "Are you ready to go?"
Tris finishes dressing Grant who's only ten months old and trying his best to crawl away, when they're done we head down to the dining hall for breakfast where Zeke and Shauna greet us from a table with their four year old son, Uriah.
"Good morning Uncle Zeke and Aunt Shauna!" Maggie yells as soon as she sees them. We get the plates of food and sit down to eat. "We're going into the city today." She says proudly.
Caleb and I used to meet once a week to catch up if we could, but now we meet once a week for our kids to play. Two years ago he had married Ashley, the girl he worked with that he thought was attractive and a year ago their son was born.
"Want to meet us in the city the kids can play in the park for a little while?" Shauna smiles when I ask.
"That would be nice, Uriah would love to run around." He nods enthusiastically while also shoving eggs in his mouth. "He's more like his father than we thought he would be, obvious by the way he eats."
Once we're done eating Tris and I scoop up the kids and head out to catch the train. We meet Caleb and Ashley in Millennium Park and sit talking while the kids run around and play tag. I notice that we dressed Maggie and Grant in black and red while Thomas, Caleb and Ashley's son is dressed in blue and white.
I guess only habits really do die hard. I think chuckling to myself.
They can't stay long but as they get up to leave Shauna and Zeke arrive with Uriah.
"Hello!" They say as soon as they get there.
Caleb helped work on Shauna's leg braces so he asks how they're working for her. She's been able to walk for years now and has probably never been happier especially now with her son.
We brought snacks for the kids and let them play through a normal lunch time but after a few hours they're exhausted and we decide to head back.
The force patrols through the city and we watch as they make rounds through the streets stopping to say hello before heading off again. When we get to the train platform Maggie is asleep in my arms and Grant is practically upside down hanging out of Tris' arms.
We place them both in their beds when we get back and lie down together in ours to rest for a little bit.
"You know," I say stroking her cheek. "I love you."
"I think I did know that." She says kissing me. "I might just love you too."
We fall asleep but it feels like it's only for a split second before we're woken up. "Mommy, I'm hungry."
Maggie wiggles her body between us and Tris plants a kiss on her forehead. "Then let's go eat."
I go get the still sleeping Grant and we head out to the dining hall.
The recruits in this cycle of training seem so young to me and when we walk into the room a few stop to come see the kids. We try our best to keep them away from the training but they still know everyone just from the recruits talking to us.
"Is it weird knowing that we're still so young and have two kids?" Tris asks when we sit.
She was only seventeen when we got married and just barely eighteen when she got pregnant with Maggie. Now, at twenty four and twenty six it does seem like we're too young for this sometimes but I wouldn't have it any other way.
"What are you thinking about daddy?" Maggie asks pulling me out of my thoughts.
Her light brown hair is long and curls a bit at the bottom and she has my eyes. I never thought I would love anyone more than I love Tris but as soon as she was born Maggie stole my heart.
"I'm just thinking about how I'm the luckiest guy alive."
I kiss Maggie on the forehead and let her finish eating, Tris reaches out and takes my hand smiling.
No, there's nothing in this world that would make me want to leave this life.
A/N: Sorry for such a short epilogue but it just seemed like the right place to end it. Hope you enjoyed!
