Together Again 2

D'Artagnan had barely recovered when orders came for him and Porthos to go to the palace. In fact, he hadn't recovered, but Athos and Aramis had to be reminded that neither of them were officially musketeers, and so could not keep him from doing his job despite their objections.

The fact D'Artagnan almost collapsed upon arrival was enough for Aramis to vow he'd get his commission back and force him to bed rest.

"Papa!" A shout startled Athos and Aramis, and Porthos merely grinned at them as a young girl around ten years rushed up and hugged D'Artagnan. She was followed by a couple of boys around fourteen years, and another one that was her age. "We heard you were sick, but they wouldn't let us go to see you!"

"The roads aren't safe for you to leave the palace just yet." D'Artagnan smiled. One of the older boys- eerily reminiscent of a young D'artagnan- slipped up to embrace D'Artagnan with only slightly less enthusiasm as the girl. "You're keeping out of trouble, I hope?"

"Try to! It's a big place!" The girl announced waving her hands to indicate the size of the palace, and D'Artagnan frowned, catching her right hand where a small bandage was stained with red.

"That's my fault." The little boy said, coming forward and struggling to meet any of the adults' eyes. "We were practicing and I cut her, I didn't mean to!"

"The sword wasn't as dull as we thought it was." The other boy added, a bit sheepish. "We were teaching them, and Phillipe tried to disarm Eloise like Alexandre had done to me."

"And he hit with the side, not the flat." Alexandre added, shifting.

"Was there an adult watching this lesson?" D'Artangan asked, looking as if he'd already figured out the answer, and was resigned.

Tellingly, none of the children answered.

"Right, so I take it your royal mother does not know what the two of you have been up to?" D'Artagnan asked the two brothers, making the young boy look to the ground.

"Please don't tell her? She's been arguing with the advisors all morning." His brother, The Dauphin, asked.

Aramis glanced to see Athos look just as surprised as he felt. Though he wasn't sure if he was surprised that D'Artagnan had two children or that the two Princes were looking at D'artagnan with the love and trust one would give to a parent.

"Did you put everything back the way it was?" The children nodded. "Then unless she asks, I won't tell her."

"Thank you!" The Dauphin smiled, Phillipe just looked relieved, glancing at Eloise's hand.

"Though I would like to know why you were practicing against my daughter?" All three boys promptly looked at each other, before D'Artagnan's son opened his mouth to answer.

"I asked them to teach me!" Eloise interrupted. "It's not fair that boys get to have all the fun!"

Aramis heard D'Artagnan's breath hitch, though the children did not notice.

"Well, next time, make sure myself or another adult is there to watch, and try to wear gloves, dull blades will not make it through." Came the order, and the children nodded, accepting the dismissal for what it was.

"We'll see you at supper?" Eloise asked.

"Most likely, now I believe you have music lessons?" The four rushed off, and D'Artagnan suddenly slumped and leaned against the nearest support, which was Porthos.

"You have children?" Athos asked, and D'Artagnan looked at him in amusement.

"When did you get married?" Aramis found himself asking, and Porthos wasn't the only one that looked at him in mild exasperation. "What?"

"I married Constance after the death of her husband, about a year after you left." D'Artagnan sighed. "I swear Eloise gets more like her mother every day." He added with a soft groan.

"How is Constance?"

"… She passed, when Eloise was two. Pneumonia." D'Artagnan sighed. "The Queen heard, and offered to help with raising them, in exchange, I'd teach her sons to use a sword and be their main guard."

"Why were you fighting, then?"

"We got word there was a plot to kidnap the princes, make her majesty comply through threat to her sons. They got Raoul instead; the battle was meant to be a distraction."

The line of questioning died then, and Aramis winced, realizing that D'Artagnan had more than enough reason to demand he hang.

"Here's a sight I never thought to see again." A voice, older than he remembered, but still familiar, drifted down the hall. Queen Anne stepped forward, and smiled, holding up a hand to stop them from bowing. "Please, don't bow, I've had quite enough of that today, and I think your side will not thank you, D'Artagnan."

"You summoned us, your majesty?"

"Yes, I wanted to hear more about the plot against my sons, but first, I think you should know," Anne looked a little embarrassed, but continued on, "my youngest apparently scratched your daughter in a sword fight."

D'Artagnan chuckled. "Yes, I found that out when I entered. They were quite sure you didn't know, however."

"One of the guards was watching in case he needed to intervene, and reported to me." Anne giggled at the next statement. "According to him, the boys were more concerned at the sight of her blood than Eloise was; I believe Phillipe even offered to marry her if she lost the hand."

"How on earth did he come up with that?" Porthos asked, sounding like he was trying to keep from laughing.

"Apparently, he took the lesson on chivalry and preserving a lady's honor very seriously." Anne shook her head, still smiling. "The guard assured me it was just a scratch, and that they bandaged it correctly."

"They did." Aramis nodded, thinking back on the bandage he'd seen.

"Good. I take it the young Raoul is alright?"

"Yes, currently he's assigned to light duty, his ribs were badly bruised, according to the physician."

"And the man behind the plot?"

"A minor land-owner, a known ally of the dauphin's uncle, Gaston Duke of Orleans." Porthos sighed, "The land-owner is called de Monet, they object to the Cardinal, apparently, they feel he is too much like Richelieu, and both have had bad dealings with him in the past."

Aramis felt his stomach drop. De Monet was the landowner that had sent him to Paris.

Eloise is from a movie: The Daughter of D'Artangan, and is his daughter by Constance. I believe the plot was Constance gave birth to her in secret before Milady killed her or something … Don't know, don't care, but she's technically canon.

Alexandre is actually based on the son of one of Louis XIV's tutors that he grew up with and considered like a brother. (They had lessons together.) Here he's D'Artangan's son and a bit more reserved than his sister, Eloise, who unfortunately inherited her father's hot-headedness and mother's temper.
