I woke with a start. My entire body protesting with every movement. Sunlight streamed sharply through the expensive, crystal clear, windows. Yesterday flooded into my memory. The police. The plane. My father, Tony Freaking Stark, avoiding me like the plague since my admittedly unexpected arrival. I blushed as embarrassment flushed my face. Was it me? I had always secretly hoped to connect with this elusive man that littered my mothers stories. Most of them negative, so naturally I had developed a bias against him but part of me clung on the possibility of having a dad, a family, someone to create blissful memories with that I was denied.
I shuddered, throwing the covers aside with these wistfully impossible thoughts, and untangled myself from the deep ocean of covers on the too soft bed. I stumbled onto the hardwood floor. My large, pink, suitcase sat patiently in the corner, and I decided to organize my mess and unpack now. My stomach grumbled softly as I set the last pair of pants into the sleek drawers lining the one wall of the room. Wrapping a light sweater around my pajama-clad body, I grabbed my phone and exited the room on an adventure to find the kitchen. As I wondered down the sharp hallway, I realized this tower was actually a maze. After several minutes I realized I was truly lost. "I'm going to die of hunger up here. No one will find my body for weeks in this maze", I muttered sourly under my breath.
Apparently too loudly, as a voice responded immediately. "I'll be sure to attend the funeral". I spun quickly to see Steve in the doorway I had just passed. He leaned against the frame, smirking at my surprise, and wiping his sweaty face with a white gym towel. His tight shirt stuck to his chest, announcing that he had just finished working out. I peered behind him and saw a large gym filled with equipment.
I blushed, cheeks radiating heat. "Sorry, I didn't think- you weren't supposed to hear that." I mentally slapped myself. I sounded like an idiot.
He only smiled larger. "It's no problem, you don't have to apologize. You've done nothing wrong," he said chuckling.
"I was looking for the kitchen..." I explained weakly.
He nodded, knowingly, his blue eyes twinkling. "Down the hall you'll find an elevator. The kitchen is on the 12th floor."
"Thanks. I keep getting lost." I admitted, tugging at a chosen strand of hair.
"Trust me. I know exactly how you feel", he agreed with the joking atmosphere disappearing for a few moments as his eyes met mine. "I'll meet you down there in a few minutes, and if you are not there I'll send out a man hunt." He said winking, the smile returning.
I giggled at his teasing, and agreed, thankful for his help.
Eventually I did find the Kitchen. Which was huge of course. The grandiose of the house was beginning to be expected, as each new thing was revealed. However, I was happy to discover a box of my favorite cereal tucked away in the endless cabinets of food. The leprechaun on the face of the Lucky Charms box smiled at me as I added its contents to my bowl. I tugged open the tall sleek refrigerator to grab the carton of milk, but jumped as a hand crossed my vision to grab something out of the cold. I looked up to see Cap smirking again. He seemed to enjoy my skittish behavior. I glared teasingly at his smiled, and he merely shook his protein shake at me, grinning wider.
I rolled my eyes at him, as I poured the frothing liquid into my bowl over top of the rainbow marshmallows.
