One of the tributes who stood out in Joy's mind was a boy called Cynicas, from Shelter Three. His face was stony and his blue eyes bore holes through Joy when he looked straight at the camera. Very unlike his fellow tribute; Cingentes Caesar. She looked in a good enough mood to smile and wave, enjoying the applause. Joy didn't recognize Cynicas' last name-Ignotus.
She would've paid more attention, except Topaz kept yawning and trying to wrap his arm around Joy. He finally stopped when they heard the word-or name rather- Snow. Her face was pouting and there was a man holding a drink on a tray for her. President Coriolanus Snow's granddaughter.
"Wow." said Topaz, echoing Joy's thoughts. She was the only female tribute, so it was no surprise when she was reaped. She walked regally up the stairs, heck; she even had a tiara on her red hair. It wasn't a natural shade, like Joy's; it was more of a blood red. Topaz gazed at the screen with what seemed like hunger.
"Look! We're finally here at the Remake Center! You guys lived on the outskirts!" Leesk peered through the window.
"Well, actually, the shelters were where they were taking refu – "Mr. Admance said matter-of-factly.
"OH! Look! That girl's got a pearl wig!" Leesk pointed excitedly.
Joy struggled to keep her face clear of emotion as she got off the train, but she looked at herself in the camera thingy, and she looked like she'd just smelled something putrid. She hoped it wouldn't set a bad first impression.
"Wow. You are like, perfect!" a girl named Lusda squealed.
Joy's prep team had just seen her. Joy thought of herself at home, giddy with excitement with the prospect of her own prep team. It all seemed useless now, like fattening a turkey for slaughter. Joy pushed the thoughts out of her head, as she had to constantly remind herself to try to win. Winning needs a positive mindset, right?
All her teachers at school had said, "Well, as long as everyone will be a winner!" But Joy didn't think she'd have fun in the games.
Lusda coughed, bring Joy back to reality. She watched their experienced hands probe her imperfections, then taking necessary action, well; in their eyes it was necessary.
One of her preppers, Sable, finally spoke. "Take off your clothes."
Joy's face flushed immediately.
Another one of her preppers, Ruek, chuckled and handed Joy a thin robe. "Wear it whenever we don't need to see you nude."
After Joy was undressed, they used tweezers to pull out stray hairs from the waxing. Joy winced every time.
"Done!" Lusda said. "Well, that was quick! You truly are beautiful."
"Thanks." Joy muttered, pulling on her robe.
"Stay here and wait for your stylist, Samrie"
"You're going to love her!" Lusda sang.
