The Doctor and the Rockstar
Making sure to be quiet so she didn't wake up a still sleeping Dani, Santana quickly got out of the bed. Rushing into her closet she pulled on clean underwear, jeans, a fresh white bra and some random t-shirt she quickly slipped on her Nikes. Grabbing a hair tie Santana put her hair into a messy bun while she went into her office. Writing a note for Dani explaining to her what was going on Santana set it on the pillow next to the still sleeping Dani. Grabbing her phone, keys, and purse Santana rushed out of her apartment, heading towards the hospital.
Twenty Minutes Later-Hospital
"Keith" Santana called her eyes landing on the nurse as she ran down the hallway towards him.
"Doctor Lopez" Keith said turning to meet her.
Stopping in front of him Santana grabbed Callie's file from his already outstretched hands "What happened?" she asked as she started scanning the file.
"She went into cardiac arrest, we were able to revive her, just barely though, she's sleeping now" Keith explained.
Taking a deep breath Santana closed her eyes "We knew the cancer had spread to her heart, as well as her lungs, and pancreas, but I was hoping we would have a few more weeks to try new chemo therapy" Santana said her voice thick with emotion.
Keith frowned "What do you mean you hoped?"
"Looking at these new scans the cancer has spread to every major organ in Callie's body" closing her eyes Santana took another deep breath "She'll be lucky to make it twenty four hours".
After spending thirty minutes explaining to Callie's family what happened and why, and how Callie now only had twenty four hours to live, Santana sat in the hospital room with Callie and her family. Callie was still sleeping but Santana didn't have the heart to leave. She had spent so much time with Callie and her family, she deeply cared about this family just like she does all of her patients. Which is why Santana didn't say anything about the fact that her hand had gone to sleep ten minutes ago because Callie's mother was squeezing it so hard.
This family didn't deserve to lose their daughter, and their son didn't deserve do loose his big sister. Not of it was fair, and Santana hated it, she hated this part of her job. But she held in the tears she was so desperately wanting to release. She would stay strong, because right now that's what Callie and her family needed.
Santana wasn't sure how long she had been in the room with Callie and her family, but eventually Keith came into the room "Doctor Lopez, there's a woman named Dani here to see you" he said gently.
Eyes widening Santana finally looked up at the clock, it was barely five am "Thank you Keith" she said softly "I'll be back in a couple minutes Mrs. Sharpe" she told Callie's mother finally pulling her hand away as Mr. Sharpe took her place next to his wife on the couch.
Walking out into the hallway Santana couldn't help but let a small smile pass onto her face when her eyes landed on Dani "You realize its five am right? You should be asleep" Santana said softly when she stopped in front of the younger woman, her hands immediately settling on Dani's hips.
Dani smiled softly "I woke up to go the bathroom, you weren't there, kind of freaked me out for a second but then I saw your note. I knew there was no way I was going to be able to sleep knowing something happened to Callie" Dani explained.
"I'm sorry I left in the middle of the night like that, but I needed to be here" Santana said her voice thick.
Dani smiled reaching up to stroke Santana's cheek with her hand "It's okay, I understand. Is Callie alright now?"
Santana closed her eyes as she leaned into Dani's hand, shaking her head a tear fell from Santana's eye "No….. Callie has twenty four hours to live".
Dani's eyes widened and her mouth fell open in shock "Are you serious?" she asked softly.
Santana nodded her head more tears falling "The cancer has spread to every major organ, she went into cardiac arrest, the chemo isn't working and there isn't enough time to start a new dose like I was hoping".
Not saying anything Dani stood up on her tip toes and wrapped her arms around Santana's neck pulling the older woman into a strong, much needed hug.
Feeling Dani's strong arms wrapped around her Santana broke down, the tears she'd been holding back for hours finally fell.
Dani didn't say anything as she held her girlfriend, she knew there was nothing she could say, she could only be there for the Latina.
By the time Santana calmed down and was just holding onto Dani, Keith once again found her "Doctor Lopez I'm sorry to interrupt but Callie's awake. She's asking for you" he explained.
Santana didn't say anything as she nodded her head. Pulling out of Dani's embrace Santana ran her hands over her face wiping the dried tears off her cheeks.
Taking a deep breath Santana intertwined her hand with Dani's "I think Callie will be glad to see you there as well" she said to Dani.
"Are you sure? Cause this seems like a family thing and I'm nowhere near close to being family" Dani asked unsure.
Santana smiled squeezing her hand "Trust me she'll want you to be there".
"Okay" Dani agreed smiling.
Kissing Dani lightly on the lips Santana led her into Callie's room where Callie sat up in her bed talking with her family.
"Santana, Dani" Callie exclaimed happily, but you could hear the weakness in her voice.
"Hi Callie" Dani said softly walking towards the young girl to gently hug her.
"So how bad is it Santana?" Callie asked not wanting to beat around the bush.
Taking a deep breath Santana looks Callie in the eye "The chemotherapy isn't working, the cancer has spread to all of your major organs, including your heart, it sent you into cardiac arrest, meaning your heart stopped but the nurses and doctors here at the time were able to bring you back. With the rate that the cancer is going and how fast it attacked your heart we won't have time to start a new round of chemo like I originally hoped".
Scrunching her eyebrows together Callie spoke again "So what exactly does that mean?"
"It means that you have twenty four hours left to live, maybe less" Santana said tears once again welling up in her eyes.
Not even blinking an eye lash Callie smiled sadly "I thought that was what you were going to say".
"Sweetie…" her mother started to say but Callie cut her off.
"No it's okay, I knew this was coming. Santana, Dani can you give me some time with my family?" Callie asked softly.
Santana nodded her head "Yeah of course". Walking over to the bed Santana gave the young girl a small hug "I'm technically not on shift right now, Dani and I are going to head out for a couple hours, but if you want us to return just have your parent's call me, and we'll come back immediately".
Callie smiled "Okay, thank you Santana for everything".
Not trusting herself to speak as more tears welled in her eyes Santana nodded her head squeezing the girl's hand one more time before the left the hospital room with Dani, so the young girl could have time with her family.
Line Break
Twelve Hours Later
Santana had gotten the call from Callie's dad thirty minutes ago, and of course she and Dani quickly rushed to the hospital.
Walking into Callie's hospital room Dani was shocked to see the drastic changes that took place in the young girl. She now had a breathing mask covering her mouth and nose, she had dark brown bags underneath her eyes, and the once brightly green iris's were now dull.
At seeing Santana and Dani enter the room Callie smiled sadly, reaching up to pull her mask off her face "It's about time you two got here" she said quietly. Dani could hear the exhaustion in her voice.
Santana smiled "You know how New York traffic is, I don't think I've ever heard Dani curse so much".
"Me, you're the one who called the poor taxi driver words I can't even repeat" Dani shot back at her girlfriend, trying to keep the mood as light as possible.
Santana just shrugged smiling although Dani could tell it was slightly forced "He's a taxi driver in New York he should be more aggressive, my abeula drives more aggressive than he did".
Callie smiled when she noticed that Dani had her own personal guitar on her back.
"You brought your guitar" Callie stated taking off her mask to talk.
Dani smiled nodding her head "Yeah, I have a song I want to sing for you, actually I wrote it thinking about you. You want to hear it?"
Callie shook her head vigorously "Of course I do" looking at Santana Callie smirked "How does that make you feel, your girlfriend wrote a song thinking about me?" Callie asked winking at the doctor.
Santana rolled her eyes "Please like I have anything to be nervous about shorty".
"Hey now there's no need for name calling" Dani said with a fake glare at her girlfriend as she sat down tuning her guitar. "Alright this song is called Nightingale, and I'm recording it in a couple weeks for my new album, this is your song Callie" she said as she finished up her tuning.

By the time Dani finished her song everyone was in tears, "That was beautiful, thank you Dani" Callie said softly.
"You're welcome Callie" Dani said wiping at her own tears.
For the next couple hours Santana and Dani sit and listen to Dani's family share different stories about Callie. They talk about Dani's new album, Santana's research, they talk about everything and anything, trying to keep everything light.
At 10:35pm Santana pronounces Callie dead, her heart shattering when she sees Callie's family wrapped together in a hug. When she feels Dani's arms wrap around her waist Santana allows herself to break in the arms of the musician.
