Chapter 10

Kiss You Before You Leave

This is it. It's been 24 hours. Marceline flew with Gumball under her arm back to the castle. He had helped Marceline instruct the skeletons to what they had to do after Marshall left the cemetery. Gumball looked up at Marceline's worried face from under her arm. Trying to cheer her up, he poked her in the belly.

"What," Marceline grunted. Gumball cringed from her dark tone of voice, but tried to cheer her up nonetheless. He climbed up onto her back and awkwardly wrapped his legs around her waist like a piggy-back ride.

"You're so cute..." Gumball whispered into her ear. Marceline clenched her jaw and tightened her grip around Gumball's knees. The prince rested his head on her shoulder, ignoring her odd responses, and stared at her beautiful face. He let his eyes wander over her and land on the bite marks on her neck. He kissed one of the small dots and before he could make it to the other one, Marceline had moved her head away.

"Gumball, something serious is about to happen. Please... stop..."

"You're right, you're right..." Gumball replied looking off into the distance. The sun was setting. Marceline didn't need this giant hat anymore. "Are you ready, Marcy?" Gumball asked. Marceline hissed.

"Just call me Marceline," she said.

"Marceline... Are you ready?"

"For what? Kicking my own dad's butt?"

"Yeah..." Gumball mumbled. Marceline was silent, keeping a straight line pressed tight between her lips.

"Honestly... no... Even with these armies of creatures programmed to defeat him, I know that it's going to be hard to tire him. Even for a few seconds..." Marceline said. "Y'know!? Why are you even helping me!? What have I ever even done for you?" Marceline blurted. Her voice cracked at the end and she shut her eyes. Using her vampire powers, she let go of Gumball and let him float next to her. "Forget I said that. I should be asking myself why I'm helping you. My dad's not out to kill me... He's out to kill you..." Marceline mumbled. Gumball gulped, realizing this.

"Marceline... why are you helping me?" Gumball asked.

"I-I...I... I don't know! Am I being selfish? I don't know if I'm being good or bad. Is this a good choice to let you live? You've lived as long as I have, Gumball... I need your help..." Marceline said. Gumball wrapped his arms around Marceline and kissed her temple. "Look, I have to land soon... And Marceline I want you to know that, even if the plan doesn't work out, I just want you to know I don't regret ever meeting you," Gumball whispered into her hair. Marceline embraced him in thanks and began descending down to the ground.

As they touched the ground, Marceline took a step away from Gumball and looked him in the eyes. "I don't know what I'd do if you died..." Marceline said. Gumball chuckled and Marceline let out a breathy and nervous laugh. One of the Banana Guards called to them from the underground fort. "Your Highness, the battle will start in only a few minutes!" The guard shouted. "Thank you," Gumball replied. The Banana Guard went back down the ladder. Gumball turned his head back to Marceline and was startled to find her lips crashing against his. After they pulled apart, Gumball stared directly into Marceline's eyes, smiling. "See you later, okay?"

Holding back tears, Marceline only hugged him tightly before flying up the walls of the Candy Kingdom, preparing for the worst to come.

After only ten minutes, the ground shook. Marceline looked up, the full moon hung high in the sky, but was becoming covered by swirling storm clouds. The original and extra Gumball Guardians were already tense and ready to attack the oncoming evil. Marshall anticipated seeing his father for the first time. The siblings leaned over the railing of the wall as the ground cracked, and boulders fell into the growing hole. A slender silhouette shot from the ground, gliding through the air, and landing on the railing that Marceline and Marshall were just leaning on. They fell back, but quickly regained balance.

"Dad!" Marceline growled.

"Why hello Marceline!" Hunson cried with mock-sincerity. He looked to the boy standing next to her. "Wow, is that you Marshall? Why haven't you ever visited me?" He shouted with a fake pout. Marshall frowned, but didn't say anything. He observed the man standing before him, already sorry Marceline had to endure the up bringing from a man like this.

"Right... Well I'm touched you brought the whole group to come an welcome me, Marceline dearest. I can see I was expected."

"Then you must know why they're here," Marceline replied, glancing at Bubblegum wearily.

"Ha! I know, believe me! What I don't know is why. How?" Hunson shifted so that he was sitting cross-legged on the railing, putting an elbow on his knee, and his chin on his palm to look like he was interested.

"What do you mean how? Dad you can't just kill him!" Marceline yelled.

"Who ever said I going to kill that prissy prince? Who obviously had to much cowardice to show up..." Hunson mumbled. Marceline hissed, hearing every word of it. Realizing what her father had just said, Marceline lowered her ax in confusion.

"You aren't going to kill him?" Marceline asked. "Then why are you here?"

"I'm here to take you back with me, my darling. The influence of that good prince will effect you in a bad way!" Hunson's eyes darkened as he began levitating again. "And oh, dear Marceline, I'm not going to kill your boyfriend. That's why I brought him." Hunson pointed towards the hole as a dark dragon emerged from it. It was taller than the very own Candy Kingdom walls. Compared to the dragon, Marceline was as insignificant as a bug. It huffed and its breath was smoke, its red eyes scanning over the entire kingdom with a flick of its pupils. Marceline heard the pops of frightened candy people.

"Come, Marceline. Don't make me use him against you. Or should I say against the Candy Kingdom," Hunson smiled deviously, a terrifying, toothy grin. Marceline growled. She was indignant and infuriated.

"If I go with you, you won't destroy the Candy Kingdom, okay?" Marceline shouted to her father as he began floating away. He turned to her with an evil smirk, "Agreed."

"No Marceline you can't!" Finn cried, running to her. Bubblegum held him back, knowing the consequences of Marceline staying. "Finn, stop! She doesn't have a choice!" She yelled in his face.

"So you're just going to let her go away? She could be gone forever!" Finn screamed back. Marceline turned away, forcing her emotions back. She kept a blank look on her face as she stared down at the purple wall she stood on. Bubblegum loosened her grip on Finn, but he didn't continue to fight. She stared at Marceline wistfully, the realization sinking in. Marshall also looked over at his sister. No one said anything, but Marceline knew they were saying goodbye. She swallowed and started to float towards her dad without looking back, defeated. She slung her ax bass over her shoulder as she made her way over to him.

"Good job, Marceline. I've missed you, y'know," Hunson said cheerfully. Marceline glared at him through her bangs, but he remained unphased as he guided her by putting his hand on her back. "See you all... Never!" He cried back with a wave of his hand.

Hunson fell into the hole first and, as Marceline began to slowly descend, he commanded, "Kill them all." She widened her eyes and immediately clawed at the ground to bring herself back up. She was just about to fly out when she felt hands gripping her ankles.

"You will stay with us forever Marceline!" She heard her father's idiot minions slither.

"No!" She cried. She kept her grip on the grass, but she knew she was slipping. She saw the dragon huff one more time before he turned in the direction of the kingdom. "No!" She cried again, mustering all the strength she could to keep herself from falling.

Like a hero, Gumball appeared over the hole. "Hold on Marceline! I've got you!" He cried. He heard demons screaming from inside the hole, chilling him to the bone. He tried to ignore them, but they sounded so pitiful.

"Gumball!" Marceline cried, bringing him back to the situation. She grunted as she tried to keep herself up. Gumball unsheathed his sword and sliced the wrists of the demons. They screamed once more before letting Marceline shoot out of the hole. She flung herself into Gumball's arms. "Thank you!" She cried into his neck. He held her tightly, trembling from almost watching her disappear forever. He buried his face into her hair until he heard the cry of the giant dragon threatening his kingdom. "Come Marceline!"

Marceline began to float and grabbed Gumball's hands to lift him up with her. Suddenly, she heard Gumball cry. She looked down and saw the handless demons chasing after them. One had bitten Gumball's ankle and he was trying to shake it off. With surprising speed and strength, the demons piled themselves up onto Gumball, making him too heavy to carry. Marceline began descending and more demons began to jump onto each other. One bit both of her hands and she let go of Gumball's shirt. She tumbled to the ground, her bass flying off and sliding feet away from her. Marceline looked up and heard the demons laughing and slithering at each other. They hurriedly dragged Gumball back to the hole and pulled him inside. She chased after them, but by the time she reached them, the hole sealed itself.

"No! Gumball!" Marceline clawed at the ground for a few seconds before stopping. She heard the screaming behind her, but all she could do was slump in defeat. She felt hopeless. She screamed, her hair flew about her. She was enraged. She jumped up and zipped to her ax bass, picked it up from the ground, and headed directly to the neck of the dragon. It was currently wrestling with all four Gumball Guardians at the same time. And winning.

She hissed one more time before yelling. She landed on the scales above the dragon's eyes and sliced at the giant's eyeballs. It cried and stopped wrestling the Gumball Guardians to try and stop her. Marshall joined her and began slashing at its other eye. The monster was now blind, and in pain. The newer Gumball Guardians were equipped with knives, much to Marshall's satisfaction, which they extended from their wrists to shoot into their hands. They nodded at one another and stabbed both sides of the dragon's thick neck. It cried out, its fiery breath being interrupted by the daggers. They twisted their blades and dragged them to it jaw, cutting meters deep into the dragon's skin.

The new and old Gumball Guardians hopped to the ground and together worked to push the dragon out of the walls of the kingdom. It fell down the hills lifeless. Marceline descended back to her friends on the ground as they panted. When they saw her, they cheered.

"Marceline!" Bubblegum cried. She flung herself to her friend and gave her a tight hug, as did Finn. She pushed them away. Frantically she pulled her long bangs away from her face.

"Gumball!" She cried, hyperventilating. Bubblegum looked at her in confusion. "He's- He's in the Nightosphere!"
