Aids from Heaven
"Well, this is a pickle."
First Lieutenant Youji Itami was no stranger to the concept of the enemy becoming an ally. Heck, one could say that that was the history of Japan; once the enemy of the United States, now its sworn ally after the war was over.
However, as it had been stated, it usually happened after the war was over. If his memory was still correct, then no peace treaty had been signed between Japan and the fantasy Romanesque empire that invaded the former out of nowhere. Yet here he was, defending the city of the enemy along with his team.
Though he supposed that this kind of scenario made sense. For all their appearance, the Japan Self-Defense Forces was officially not a military. Sure, they had guns, tanks, destroyers, submarines, fighter jets, bombers, and other toys that one would associate with the military. However, that didn't erase the fact that the JSDF was more…civilian in mindset, for the lack of better words. They were not as hardened as soldiers from other nations.
Thus, the thought of letting this town be destroyed by a third party – which was none other than deserting enemy soldiers who turned to banditry – was not something that many in his team would accept. Heck, Itami himself would admit that the thought sickened him.
That was how they ended up guarding one of the gates of the City of Italica. The southern gate had received heavy damage from the previous assault. It was likely that the enemy would launch another wave of attack to finally breach it. It was the reason why the leader of the defender – Princess Pina Co Lada – was assigned to that part of the fortification.
Of course, it was then revealed that the bandits decided to attack another gate. And then Rory Mercury started to act…weird if one was being polite.
"So, are we really going to just stand here, doing nothing, Sir?" Sergeant First Class Akira Tomita asked.
"Unfortunately, there's not much that we could do." He replied. "There's not much trust between us and the locals. Until we receive the order to…"
Suddenly, Itami closed his mouth.
"Do you hear that?" The lieutenant stated, causing his men to look at him.
"Hear what?" Sergeant First Class Shino Kuribayashi said. "I hear nothing."
"Wait, I think I got it." Sergeant Major Souichirou Kuwahara spoke. "It sounds like…something falling through the air."
"Like…an artillery or something?" Sergeant First Class Mari Kurokawa asked.
"No, it's too slow…and big." The old soldier replied. "Whatever it is, it's not something that I have experience with."
"Hmm…" Itami put a hand on his chin before looking at their local companions. "Hey, do you know anything that is slow, big, and falling from the sky?"
"No…" Lelei La Lalena shook her head in confusion, followed by the elf Tuka Luna Marceau.
"Great, an unknown." He sighed. "Hopefully, it's nothing too dangerous, like that giant dragon."
"How did it go so wrong?"
That was the thought in the mind of Princess Pina Co Lada, the overall commander of the defense of Italica. She tried to figure out which mistake she committed. From the reports that she gathered, the "Jayesdeef" was able to defeat the combined might of the Vassal armies despite being outnumbered. In other words, a single soldier of the Men in Green was worth more than a single legionnaire. It was the reason she decided to assign them to the southern wall which had received continuous assault and was almost on its last leg.
For some reason, however, the former soldiers of the Empire and vassal states decided to attack the eastern wall instead. Needless to say, they were caught off-guard by the move to the point that one of her officers – Norma Co Igloo – was killed in combat.
Pina shook her head, realizing the futility of her action. She could think about it once the fighting was over. For now, she must focus on preventing the bandits from taking the city.
"Grey," She asked her old mentor. "What's the status of the battle?"
"Unfortunately, I have nothing but bad news, Princess." The old man stated. "Norma's death caused our men to be severely demoralized. I believe it is only a matter of time until the enemy takes over the wall, allowing them to open the gate and enter the city."
The red-haired woman could only grit her teeth. It was a good thing that she ordered the construction of a second line of defense in case the wall was breached. Nevertheless, it didn't erase the fact that the wall was about to be breached in the first place.
Before she could say anything in response…
THUMB
The defenders and even some of the attackers paused upon hearing the loud noise. It reminded Pina of the sound a rock thrown by a trebuchet would make when it crashed into the ground. Last time she checked though, neither side possessed such a siege engine.
"What…is that…?" She couldn't help but ask.
When they realized something big and hard landed behind them, many of the bandits turned their attention away from the wall. It was quite dark, so they couldn't see it clearly. Whatever it was, the thing was nothing like a rock used by the siege engines of the Empire.
Then, the thing "cracked" open and several figures emerged from it. Almost instantly, it was followed by the sound that the former soldiers had been traumatized with after their fight – which would be more apt to be called a massacre – with the invaders from the other side of the Gate.
The sound of gunfire.
When their compatriots exploded into blood and gore, the bandits became panicked as they remembered their futile attempts during the fight against the JSDF. Unfortunately, that was not the end of their nightmare; one of the figures – a giant in size upon closer look – ran towards them with something resembling a sword in its hand. Yet the weapon emitted a voice that remind one of the buzzes of bees.
Realizing that they were attacked from the rear, the former soldiers tried to divert some of their forces to repel the attack. The only thing that it did was allow the mysterious attackers to kill them faster. It didn't take long for panic to set in.
The ones in charge tried to raise the morale back, yet the action also revealed their positions. The giant with a sword ran towards them, ignoring anyone foolish enough to remain on his path; those who weren't able to move away in time were crushed under its massive feet.
Without giving them any chance to defend themselves, the giant killed the leaders of the bandit army. No, "butchered" was a more appropriate term for its blade chopped the poor bastards into pieces. It was the fate shared by the ones unfortunate enough to be close when the giant figure performed its attacks.
They tried to penetrate its armor with every weapon at their disposal to no effect. In fact, it might simply irritate the giant, causing it to speed up its effort in turning them into red paint. Seeing the hopelessness of their situation, the bandits did the only option that they had left; to run away with their tails between their legs, just like what they did back in Alnus Hill.
Meanwhile, the defenders on the other side of the wall could do nothing but simply listened to the death screams of their enemy. Despite everything that they had done, one couldn't help but feel a little bit of sympathy for their fate.
It was dawn when the fight was finally over and silence fell upon the air. The sounds of the battle had drawn the attention of the JSDF, especially once they realized that a firearm not belonging to any of them was used.
There was a knock on the gate of the eastern wall...which then fell. The bandits must have weakened the structure, yet there was no doubt that a simple knock was all that it took to bring it down. Those who think about it soon discarded what they thought when their saviors entered through the fallen gate.
There were four of them, giants clad in yellow armor. On their chests was the symbol of a skull with a pair of angel wings. Their left pauldrons were a symbol of a red heart with a red drop on its lower left; the background of the symbol was white and black in a checkered pattern.
As they moved, many witnessed how it was done with fluidity and speed that were simply majestic. The four were just walking, yet power and confidence emanated from that simple action.
Another thing that was noticed by the JSDF was how the presence of the four was overwhelming, making their legs weak. It was only thanks to their training that they remained steadfast and that was barely. The same thing could not be said to the civilians conscripted as militias: many of them went down to their knees, some even almost to the point of prostrating themselves on the dirt.
Once they were only a few feet away, the giants stopped. The red lens on their helmets gazed upon them, making the situation quite uncomfortable. Then, a booming voice suddenly came out from the leading figure, the giant armed with what appeared to be a chainsaw sword.
"I am Gavriel, Captain of the Space Marine Chapter the Lamenters. To whom am I speaking?"
So, yeah, this is something that I have to write else I would be dealing with writer's block.
This came up when I talked with others about how to make a Gate crossover with WH40K work considering the sheer discrepancy of power. I suggested that one take a book from For Those We Cherish, an RWBY/WH40K story where the Lamenters arrived on Remnant. As strong as they are, the Space Marines still have to be careful since they lost contact with the Imperium.
And thanks to that, the idea stuck in my mind, causing quite a bit of problem when I wrote the chapters for other stories.
Apologize, but please don't expect regular updates for this story. Balancing the Gate locals, the JSDF, and the Lamenters would be quite challenging, for the lack of a better word. This going to take quite a time to figure out.
If you have a question or suggestion, feel free to tell me.
Review, please!
