The New Rose
Chapter 6:
So I far I have been in Russia for a week. Abe got me a tutor to teach me Russian, if I was going to be living here, I had to learn it, or so he says. So far I have killed 52 Strigoi since being here. Viktoria has been doing well with her training. She is a quick learner, and we became closer during our training sessions and were becoming really great friends. Abe and I spent some time together, though not a lot as he worked, my days I spent shopping and having lunch with Viktoria, I spent my nights killing Strigoi. But no matter how many I killed, it felt like there wasn't a dent in the population.
I fell backwards onto the cement, stars blurred my vision, blinking them away I pulled myself onto my feet to fight the Strigoi, silver stake in hand. He was a lot older, I could tell from the way he moved and spoke. He threw his head back and laughed menacingly. The room kept spinning and I was struggling to hold on. He lunged at me, throwing a punch, blocking it I punched back. My fist collided with his face, but then he brought his foot up, kicking me in the chest. I flew backwards, hitting the opposite wall, silver stake flung out of my hand with the impact, I struggled to stay up. My vision was blurry, a sharp pain at the side of my neck knocked me back to reality. He bit me! I let out a girlish scream, trying to push him back, I couldn't. Looking around, the only thing I could use as a weapon was a bin lid. I grabbed it, using all my strength I pushed him off me, he fell backwards, stumbling, kicking him in the chest I watched him go down. That was my time gap I needed, I jumped on top of him, straddling him to keep him from getting up, I brought down the bin lid. Once. Twice. Three times. On the third try, his head was unattached, I rolled over, unable to move anymore, black stars danced in my vision until I drifted off into darkness. Passing out.
I woke up to a voice. "Rose, Rose?" I recognised the voice but I couldn't figure out how or who it belonged to. I slowly opened my eyes to see Viktoria leaning over me. I didn't recognise the room. Viktoria's brown hair with purple streaks hung just in front of my face, her chocolate brown eyes-the same eyes as Dimitri-looked worriedly at me. "Mum! She's awake!"
A few minutes later a woman in her 40's rushed into the room. She had chocolate brown eyes, a kind face, long brown hair and tanned skin. I groaned, trying to move but my muscles ached all over. "Don't move, sweetie," the woman said as she stood beside me. "My name's Olena Belikova, I'm Viktoria's mum."
I felt hot and feverish, my mouth dry, my throat ached, my neck hurt. "Follow my finger," she said, putting her finger in front of me, moved it back and fourth, I followed it with my eyes. "You're very responsive. Now can you tell me how many fingers I'm holding up?"
She help up three fingers. "Three," I said, my voice hoarse and sore. She held up two fingers. "Two." She held up four fingers. "Four."
"Good," she said. "Karolina! Bring me a glass of a water for the young girl!"
A few minutes later a woman in her twenties walked into the room with a glass of water in hand and a shy boy, hiding behind her skirt, peering up at me. It must've been Karolina, she also had chocolate brown eyes but dark brown wavy hair. The boy looked like a younger version of Dimitri but his hair was a little bit shorter. He had chocolate brown eyes like Dimitri and Dimitri's face shape, it made me want to cry. "Did you really decapitate a Strigoi with the lid of a trashcan?" he asked shyly with awe all over his face.
"Yes," I told him. He looked at me amazed.
"Wow," he looked awestruck.
"Paul, what did mum say about coming in her?" the woman-Karolina-said, looking at the boy.
He looked down at his feet, "Yes mumma," he said before turning and leaving the room.
After that, I don't know what happened because everything went black.
A few days passed. I had met Karolina (the eldest daughter of Olena), Sonya (the third child) who seemed like she didn't like me very much, and Viktoria was the youngest, Paul and Zoya (Karolina's children), and Dimitri's grandmother Yeva. Sonya is pregnant, to a Moroi who she wouldn't name, which I thought is odd. Yeva was a cookey old woman who only spoke Russian, I only caught some of what she'd say. Viktoria told me that Yeva said she had a dream about me before I came, the rest of Viktoria's family just laughed it off, but I knew better than to laugh it off, I had seen so much that I knew better than to laugh her off but I couldn't find time alone to talk with her. And when I got better I went back home to Abe's, who was worried about me. Karolina had apparently found me and brought me to Olena, she gave me my silver stake when I left, all of them asked me to visit soon, except for Sonya.
When I arrived home Abe was worried. "Rose! Where have you been?" he asked frantically. "I was about to get a search party to come looking for you!"
I sighed. "Sorry Abe. I had a bit of an accident and Olena, Victoria's mother, well she, saved my life, pretty much." He looked at me shocked and concerned. "I was out hunting Strigoi and well I met my match. I had to decapitate him with the lid of a bin." I shrugged.
"That's my girl," he replied, giving me a pat on the back. After that I walked upstairs, showered and changed into some clean clothes.
A week passed since I left Viktoria's and I was finishing up my training session with her. "You're getting so good Vik!" I told her.
She looked up at me, hopeful written all over her face. "You really think so?"
I smiled. "Of course! You've gotten stronger, leaner, faster and more co-ordinated!" At that we both laughed.
"Come on! My mum and Paul want to see you," she said. Finishing towel drying her hair.
"Cool," I said. "So how has your mum been?" I asked while walking out of the house, unlocking the car.
"Good, but worried about you," Viktoria said.
I laughed. "She doesn't need to," was all I said as I pulled out of the driveway.
"That's what Paul keeps telling her! To be honest, I think he has a bit of a crush on you, he won't stop talking about you," Viktoria said.
I pulled into her driveway laughing, I noticed a new car there. "Wow, a ten year old boy has a crush on me? I better not let him down," I told her with a giggle.
She laughed. "Karolina is going crazy!" she said as we hopped out. "She threatens to send him to Dimka, he threatens to enjoy it and not come back!" she opened the door and we burst in laughing.
"Oh my gosh! That's the funniest thing I've heard since that Strigoi told me the joke about the two blondes and the bomb! Not that I would've let him know I was laughing on the inside," I told her as we walked into the living room.
"Roza!" Olena greeted me, pulling me into a hug. "It's so good to see you when you're not unconscious or passing out in Viktoria's bed!" She kissed me on the cheek.
I laughed. "Thanks!" I hugged her back. "It's good to see you too."
"Roza! You look well!" Karolina said, pulling me into a hug and kissing me on the cheek.
"Never been better," I told her, hugging her back.
Sonya grumbled something in Russian I couldn't hear and then stomped upstairs. Wow, she really didn't like me. I could hear three footsteps on the stairs, one was light and running, the other two were heavier. I looked at the stairs and seen Paul nearly tumble out from them "Roza! You're here!" he said, not sounding shy at all. "Have you killed anymore Strigoi with a trash can lid?"
I laughed. "No Paul," I told him and he looked disappointed.
"Damn," he muttered. Then I seen him. It was Dimitri, he was smiling, but when he seen me he looked up shocked. I was stunned. I never I thought I'd see him again. "Dimka! Roza killed a Strigoi with the lid of a trash can! Mamma found her unconscious and brought her to Grandma! Tell him Roza, tell him!"
Dimitri looked down at Paul then back up at me. "Rose," he said, looking up at me.
Tasha descended down the stairs and froze in shock. "Rose!" she exclaimed than ran up to me, pulling me into a hug. "I was so worried when I heard you left the Academy!"
Viktoria cleared her throat from beside me, and I looked around at everyone's shocked faces and Yeva smirking. Blushing I ran out. I slammed the door shut behind me and unlocked my car. I heard the door open and shut behind me and turned to see Dimitri running towards me, Viktoria following. "Roza!" he called. "Roza!" He grabbed my arm, turning me around.
I sighed. "I can't do this Dimitri!" I told him.
"Rose, please, talk to me! I was so worried when I heard you left the Academy!" he said. I looked up into his eyes and seen the fear, confusion and most of all-shining through-was adoration and love. "I thought it was because of me."
"It was Dimitri! I left because you broke my heart!" I yelled, not caring who heard. "I went back for you! Because I couldn't stand the thought of them killing you or worst-turning you! I couldn't stand idly by at the Academy while I didn't know what happened to you!"
"Roza," Dimitri said, a pained look taking over his features as he held my hand, grabbing my other with his other.
"No, let me finish. Mason died, my best friend, he died and it nearly destroyed me, you were there you knew, and I couldn't have done anything about it," tears fell, betraying me, "and I promised I wouldn't leave anyone behind, so how could I let you die or get turned? If you did get turned, I would've hunted you down and killed you, because I remember you told me you'd want someone to kill you if you turned, and that would've broke my heart all over again."
Dimitri sighed. "Rose," was all he said and sighed again. "I'm sorry. I should've been more understanding. Mason hadn't died not that long ago, I should've realized."
I looked at him defiantly. "Yeah you should have." I rubbed the tears out from my eyes and he looked at me, hurt and pain all over his face.
"Why? Why Russia? Why my family?" he asked.
I shook my head. "My dad, he lives in Russia, and I met Viktoria after she seen me kill 6 Strigoi and she begged me to train her, I didn't know she was your sister at the time and I met the others by accident," I told him truthfully, looking down guiltily.
"So is that why you changed the subject every time I brought up Dimitri?" Viktoria asked, looking up at her I seen her by the doorway. I nodded.
"Viktoria, go inside, I need to talk to Rose alone," Dimitri said, never taking his eyes off me.
The door slammed shut behind her and I turned around ready to walk away. "Rose, stop trying to walk away," Dimitri said. Grabbing me by the arm and turning me to face him. "I'm sorry, okay? I shouldn't have given up so easily. I know giving yourself up to me was a big thing, I never meant to take it or you for granted. I swear."
I looked up at him. "You did though," was all I said.
He wound my hair around his finger, looking at my hair in amazement. I sighed. "Roza," he said, looking down at me with a look I haven't seen in a long time. His hand wound down to my waist and pulled me closer. "I wish I could take it all back." Was all he said before he kissed me.
I kissed him back, my hands clutching the collar of his duster, pulling him closer. His tongue ran across my bottom lip, begging for entrance. One. Twice and I simply obeyed as his tongue thrust into my mouth, our tongues battling for dominance, brushing each other. I breathed him in. His scent. The feel of his body against mine. Feeling my broken heart mend then it hit me and I backed up slowly, falling into my car. "Dimitri," I said. "I can't." The look on his face was pained. And I started the engine and took off.
