Double Team
Robin clipped his belt on, sighing and looking around the room. It had been depressing since the weapon had escaped, more accurately since Guardian and Rocket had died. Red Arrow had been accepted into the team and had been training with Artemis almost every day and Robin as well once Robin was recovered enough.
The war had progressed poorly for Gotham. Wally had returned to active duty, along with Red Arrow's replacement, an android with an arm that was able to turn into a very strong beam cannon. Red Arrow identified him as Arsenal, meant to replace Red Arrow by killing him anyway. Black Beetle had also been slaughtering Gotham troops. However, recently, the weapon had reappeared, attacking Star City troops almost more than Gotham, forcing Star City to stop attacking in favor of trying to fend off the weapon, a task that had only been even halfway possible because of Match, who was only barely capable of holding his own. Finally, Star City and Gotham had both been driven to very drastic measures.
"It's agreed then," the Star City general said, leaning on the table, Wally, Tempest, Match, Black Beetle, and Arsenal behind him. "Our best soldiers will go after the creature and destroy it with help from your team.
"And once the threat is neutralized, our cities will sign a peace treaty and end this sensless violence," the Gotham general finished.
Star Citie's general nodded and Gotham's looked to Robin.
"Are you sure you're up to this?" the general asked.
"Only one way to find out," Robin stated. "The weapons Star City provided will give us an edge oflver this creature. If anyone can kill it, it's us."
The generals both nodded and Star City's general turned and walked to his convoy, stopping outside his Jeep and whispering something to Arsenal. Then, he looked to Gotham's general.
"As a show of good faith," Star City's general spoke up. "The creature seems to have been unleashing several of Star City's decades old super soldier projects. Be very careful around them. They're dangerous. That's why they were shut down."
Gotham's general nodded and Star City's climbed into the vehicle and the convoy left. Robin sighed and picked up his new eskrima sticks. They were the exact same as his old ones but were a metal deigned to stand up to Match, and by extention, the creature. In addition, be had a pair of wakizashi of the same metal, and matching boomerangs. Artemis and Red Arrow had been likewise upgraded with their bows and arrows being metal with the special arrows all being the same. Superboy and Cassie had not been upgraded and Kaldur and Tula had flat out refused Garth's offer of weapons and armor.
Wally sped over, stopping behind Artemis and Robin.
"So Artemis," Wally grinned. "Now that we're on the same side, you wanna get some food?"
"I would rather kiss the thing we're hunting," Artemis stated. "You betrayed us and have repeatedly tried to kill us. Just because the wae is over doesn't make us friends. If we even suspect that you're doiblecrossing us, you die."
"Have it your way," Wally growled. "I was going to get you immunity from Star City. But I'll just keep the money I guess."
He turned to leave but stopped.
"By the way, how long has it been since you've seen Wolf?" Wally asked grinning wickedly.
"What did you do?" Robin snarled, remembering the day months ago when Wolf had left to get food and never returned.
Wally sped off, stopping on the far side of the room, grinning but silent. Robin curled his hands into fists but forced himself to calm down when Artemis slipped her hand into his.
"He's taunting you," Artemis said.
Robin nodded and glanced toward the others in the room. Gotham's general had left, leaving them to prepare since they knew what they were doing and where they were going. Superboy, Wonder Girl, and Match were all sitting around, talking civilly as though they were all old friends. Tempest was leaning on a wall, grinning at Tula while Tula tried to ignore him and Aqualad gripped a table hard to keep from killing Tempest for her. Black Beetle and Blue beetle were simply glaring at each other while Red Arrow glared at Arsenal.
Arsenal looked like a younger version of Red Arrow with a shaved head, a black steel-plated shirt with red steel splints attatching the front and back plates on his sides, his cannon arm being a black metal, a black mask over his eyes, a heavy machine gun and rocket launcher across his back, and metal plated combat boots. Red Arrow had traded hia old outfit for one consisting of, a similar mask, a black shirt with a red arrow-head-shaped patch taking up his chest and pointing downward, a quiver with thick leather straps around both shoulders, and black pants and combat boots.
"It's time to head out," Robin spoke up.
"Good," Aqualad snarled. "Segregated by city."
"Agreed," Robin nodded as he pulled the tarp off of his latest toy, a massive heavilly armored truck with three sets of rear tires, an armored shell capable of withstanding Superboy, and a heavy machine gun mounted on top that fired antimaterial rounds capable of punching through three tanks, or one monster, hopefully. "What have you got?"
Wally snorted and sped out through the vehicle door Robin had opened. Robin's team climbed in as the others from Star City left and Robin drove out of the base. Outside, he stopped when the Star City team pulled up in a similar vehicle that was bigger and had a missile launcher preloaded with twenty tank popper missiles in addition to the machine gun.
"Watchu got?" Wally asked, sitting behind the machine gun.
Robin rolled his eyes and sped off after the creature. Their vehicle was capablw of sixty, an impressive feet given the monumental weight the armor, gun, and ammor added. Clearly, Star City's was better, as it sped past almost instantly. Wally waved as it passed and Robin grumbled a swear under his breath. Soon, Star City disappeared from sight and Robin continued along the planned path. An hour later, they reached a canyon and stopped as Star City's tank came into view, parked in front of a rickety old wooden bridge.
"Well well," Robin snarled. "Isn't that just perfect."
He climbed up to the machine gun, looking at an equally agitated Wally.
"There another way across?" Robin asked.
"No," Wally snorted. "Our general said bridge. I had assumed he meant a useful one."
Robin sighed and dropped back down, opening the side.
"We're walking," he stated stepping out of the tank.
The others followed and they walked over to the bridge where Star City's team was waiting.
"This is going to be much more difficult," Wally stated.
"Yeah,"Robin nodded. "One at a time. I'll walk first. Wonder Gurl, carry Artemis and Tula across. Superboy, can you jump it?"
"Easily," Superboy nodded.
"Take Red Arrow and Aqualad," Robin said.
"I'll carry Arsenal," Black Beetle spoke up.
"I'll get Tempest," Match said.
"Guess we're walking huh?" Wally grinned.
"You fuck with me, I drop you," Robin warned as the others all left.
Wally nodded and Robin started across the bridge. Just as his foot hit solid ground, Wally sped past, sending him sprawling to the ground. Robin rolled to his feet, wakizashi coming out as Wally laughed, all of both sides suddenly having their weapons aimed at each other.
"You were too slow," Wally laughed.
"You're damn lucky I was across the bridge," Robin snarled. "That was your only warning. For the sake of the peace treaty, I'll let you live. Do it again, and you die."
Robin put his weapons away and after a tense second, so did the others. They began to walk along the path, soon entering a valley with nearly vertical walls on either side. Artemis kept an arrow ready and Robin a boomerang with his free hand on an eskrima stick. Just as they reached an open section, the ground in the center exploded skyward.
"Fuck," Robin swore. "What is it?"
A massive bluish grey creature with tatters of what looked like skin covering its body, and red lines all over it wearing a pair of tattered brown shorts that may have been pants at one time shot out of the dust, landing in front of them, towering over them, nearly ten feet tall. Beside him landed an even bigger green man with tears in his flesh and muscle exposed below. A dark-skinned man with what looked like a wrestler's costume, massive muacles making him a wall of muscle, and glowing green tubes attached to him all over landed to the other side. Finally, a much taller man with glowing red eyes, yellow skin, and a tight purple and blue suit landed behind them, cratering the ground.
"Um...are these..." Robin began and trailed off as Wally nodded.
"Super soldiers," Match stated. "Four of dozens. Who wants who?
