Evelyn was dreaming a distant dream of stargazing and hand grazing and a kiss that made her whole body shudder. But it slowly faded away into a bright light as she woke up with the sun shining through her window.
For a moment, Evelyn closed her eyes again and tried to recapture the dream. It was undeniably sweet. But a soft sound near her forced open her eyes. It was the sound of someone else sleeping. Evelyn turned over and saw Sirius on the far side of the bed facing away from her. The perfect mirror image of her own sleeping body.
She stared at Sirius. He looked more handsome after a good night's rest. She couldn't help but notice how peaceful he looked as he slumbered. A slight smile danced across his lips and Evelyn ached to know what he was dreaming about. Just then, she saw the time on her clock and realized that her alarm would go off in exactly 1 minute. She reached over his sleeping form to turn it off but didn't make it in time. It went off with a large buzz and Sirius jerked awake.
Evelyn froze nearly on top of him and looked down at his alarmed face.
"Sorry! I'm so sorry! I was trying to turn it off," she explained while it still buzzed noisily.
"Turn it off now," he groaned as he covered his head with the pillow.
Stupid, stupid girl. Evelyn thought to herself and she turned it off. She was so used to making a fool of herself around other people, especially of the opposite sex. If only she could be calm and collected like she longed to be.
"I'm sorry," Evelyn muttered again.
Sirius peeked from beneath the pillow and saw Evelyn's hair tangled up. It was still long and and he missed when it was short and would stick up in crazy ways. She looked embarrassed as she sat there and Sirius took it as a welcome change. She had always been so cool around him. He looked at the clock and back at her.
"Why are we up so early?"
"I have school." She said in an apologetic way.
"School?" Sirius asked surprised. "How long do muggles go to school for?"
"Not school school. Culinary school."
"Culinary? Like cooking? You're going to be a cook? Cool." Sirius said.
"Er, what do you do?" Evelyn asked awkwardly. What sort of jobs did wizards even have?
"Well, I'm part of an organization that kind of...helps people. You know...from bad people." Sirius didn't know how to explain that he didn't work for money. He didn't have time to worry about a job or career when there was a war going on. One day he would do the proper training to be an Auror but until then the order of the Phoenix was his full time job.
"So, like a policeman?" Evelyn asked.
Sirius laughed. "Policemen! They seem rather useless. One time James and I were being chased by a pair. Bunch of blubbering idiots."
Evelyn wondered what kind of trouble he had gotten himself into. He did say that he and Evelyn met while breaking into a shop, which Evelyn could barely believe for it was very unlike herself.
"I see. Well that's...noble that you help others."
Sirius shrugged and stared at her, wanting to speak but unsure if it would upset her. Instead he asked:
"Did you sleep well?"
"Better than I have in ages. Thank you."
"Well, I could sleep here again tonight. If you needed it, you know."
Evelyn could barely contain the feeling of hope bubbling up inside her.
"I...I think that would be lovely."
So, that was how Sirius and Evelyn found themselves sleeping next to each other every night that week.
As Evelyn opened the door to her apartment, she carefully balanced the bags of leftovers in her hand. Evelyn loved to bring home the extra food that she spent most of the day slaving over. Sirius more than once had taken a bite and asked if she had used any magic. It made her giddy.
Evelyn had often felt the urge to create, that something was missing from inside her, something she longed for, her passion. She thought cooking might be it but she had her doubts. She never felt better about it then when Sirius grinned at her.
Evelyn had never felt happier. Each day, she and Sirius would discuss some aspect of their past. It all sounded so far-fetched, so ridiculous , that Evelyn could only laugh. Then, each night she would dream it and some extra detail would be there. The excuse she told her mom, the outfit she thought about wearing but didn't, what she served someone at the diner that night. Evelyn had been crazy for years and this was the craziest thing she had ever done but she felt strangely sane.
Maybe she felt same because Sirius seemed like the crazy one. With his amazement at televisions and microwaves and the way he always looked at her incredulously when she was doing something perfectly normal. At the same time, he was so perfectly arrogant and self-assured that she was certain he couldn't be insane, just filled with childlike wonder.
She made up her mind that she wanted to bring him to the movie theater when she heard a knock at the door. She bounced up to answer it. Outside, Sirius stood looking exhausted. He managed a small smile.
"Are you hungry?"
"Not really. I actually can't spend the night because I'm on night duty but I can take a little nap."
Evelyn felt her heart drop but she nodded and let him in. He had been keeping a suitcase in her bedroom. It felt so strange to be sleeping next to this man but she couldn't deny that she never slept better. Sirius was changed and already under the covers by the time she put the food away.
"Good night," she said.
She laid down cautiously next to him. Not feeling very tired, she stared at the ceiling listening to his breathing. She stayed like that for an hour, her mind racing. She closed her eyes and a sudden vision came upon her. Sirius was close to her face, a guitar was on her lap, and he was telling her to play it. Evelyn opened her eyes suddenly. Guitar. She had played he guitar.
"Sirius?" She said softly.
"Mmm?"
"Did we play guitar together?"
He turned to face her, bleary eyed. "You played. We actually got kicked out of the store because I got a bit, er, cheeky."
"Did I like it?"
"Me being cheeky? No, you hated that."
Evelyn laughed. "No, the guitar."
"Oh." Sirius felt his stomach drop a little, remembering just how much he had taken away from Evelyn. "Yeah. You loved it."
"I don't remember that," Evelyn said softly as she turned towards the ceiling, suddenly embarrassed by the tears in her eyes. "I don't remember any of that."
Sirius rolled closer to her and tentatively reached out to wipe away the lone tear that fell.
"I'm so sorry, Eve. I'm so sorry about everything."
Evelyn slowly turned to face him, her face inches from his. He looked so sincere, so sad, and so incredibly beautiful at that moment, that she leaned forward without thought.
The moment their lips touched, Evelyn felt like a firework had exploded inside of her. She tried to focus on the feeling of his mouth but again and again she thought of herself at 16, kissing this very same boy, urgently and happily. His mouth moved against her and all thoughts vanished, everything vanished, except for the pair of them.
