Tap… tap… tap…
Lewis jolted awake as the tapping at his window kept going. He walked over, just in time for another pebble to hit the window pane. He raised his eyebrow and opened it, leaning out and looking around for the source of the thrown pebbles.
"Lewis! Over here, it's me, Charlotte."
He turned his head to the tree next to his bedroom, and indeed there was Charlotte, nimbly climbing up the oak tree with seemingly no effort.
"Charlotte, what are you doing here, it's the middle of the night!" Lewis said, exasperated.
"I know, I know, I'm sorry." She jumped onto the roof, light as a feather, and looked at him. "Something happened at Mako, I thought you should know about it."
Lewis stepped back, and Charlotte came into his room. "Sorry about the mess," he apologized, moving his various science projects out of the way before indicating the chair at his desk for Charlotte.
"So, what happened?" Lewis asked, concern creeping into his voice, as he sat on the bed.
"Well, I kind of fell into the moon pool tonight-"
"What?!"
"It was an accident, Lewis!" Charlotte exclaimed. "Willow went into this kind of trance, and then she pushed me in. But, I didn't get my tail back, and the weirdest thing happened."
Lewis rubbed his eyes tiredly. "How did you not get your tail back? What happened?"
Charlotte bit her lip. "Well, I didn't get my tail, but I did get my powers, more than before."
"What does that mean, Charlotte?"
"According to Willow, I'm a witch as well as a Slayer. Like, a real, honest-to-goodness witch."
Lewis let out a breath. "How do you know?"
She laughed softly. "I just made everything in my room float a foot off the ground. Trust me, I know." She got up and sat next to him on the bed. "Willow's leaving tomorrow. I don't know what I'm gonna do without her help"
"What do you mean?"
"I need someone to help me with my… magic."
"You can get help here. The girls and I, we can help you control your powers," Lewis said earnestly. "It doesn't have to be like last time."
"It isn't going to be like last time, I know it won't be. I won't let it happen."
Lewis was taken aback by the earnestness in her voice. When they had first gotten together, it had been more out of circumstances, how they kept falling together, and Charlotte kept getting the wrong impression. Oh, he meant to tell her that he wasn't interested, but at the same time… he kind of had been. He had enjoyed Charlotte's company, and the time they had spent together.
"Charlotte," he sighed, gently taking her hand, "You know I care about you, right?"
She was looking at their hands, and briefly lifted her eyes to meet his before looking away again. "Yes, you told me you did." Charlotte laid her head against his. "Cleo's lucky she has you."
"I really did like being with you," Lewis confessed. "You're smart, and funny, and really sweet."
"You just liked that you could go swimming with me," Charlotte teased, laughing softly.
Lewis laughed with her, nodding a little. "Yeah, that was kinda nice, I'll admit."
The pair sat in silence for a few minutes, and Charlotte looked at Lewis's cast. "How's your arm doing?"
"Not bad. It doesn't hurt much, just more of an inconvenience sometimes."
Charlotte took his arm into her lap, and looked over it. She bit her lip in thought, and put her hands on both sides of his arm and concentrated on his bones, specifically, it growing back together, healing it.
"What are you doing, Charlotte?" Lewis asked.
"Be quiet for a second," she whispered.
Lewis complied, feeling a warmth spreading from her palms across his arm. He could feel the warmth down into his bones. The pain caused by the broken limb was slowly dissolving, he could almost feel it healing, and growing back together.
Charlotte took a breath, sending her strength to Lewis. "I'm really sorry for all that happened," she whispered.
"Me too."
Finally, Charlotte took her hands away, and gripped the bottom of the cast. "This might hurt," she warned. Before Lewis had a chance to ask what, she ripped the cast in two, tearing it off of his arm.
"Charlotte, what are you doing?!" Lewis exclaimed.
"I fixed your arm," she explained simply. He lifted it up at eye level and flexed his hand.
"It doesn't hurt anymore," he said, amazed. "Charlotte, that's incredible."
"I don't know how I did it, I just thought about it," she said. "I wanted it to happen, and I suppose it did."
She looked around the room, and waved her hand, sparkles coming from her fingertips and dancing around the room before fading out.
"What do you think I should do?" she asked, looking out the window.
"Why are you asking me?"
"You're the smartest person I know, Lewis."
Lewis sighed. "I think you should do whatever you want. Whatever you feel you should do."
Charlotte nodded in agreement, and stood up, going to the window. What should she do? Emma, Cleo, and Rikki were the only ones who had any experience with magic. True, they were still learning, but so was she. Maybe they could help one another.
She smiled, looking out into the night. She could hear the ocean waves crashing, she felt the air brush against her skin like electricity. The clouds parted, and moonlight shone down on her, and Charlotte sighed. The light felt like a warm blanket, or a hug from a friend. She climbed out of the window and went out onto the roof.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Lewis." Charlotte looked over her shoulder with a serene grin, stepping to the edge of the roof and stepping off.
"Charlotte, be careful," Lewis tried to warn her, but she was already halfway across the yard, running nimbly into the night.
