A Harry Potter Fanfiction
Chapter 5
"What?" Hermione asked.
"Why?" Draco countered.
"Just a tiny spell, a harmless spell," Luna explained. "It will make it simpler for you to explain to me your dilemma."
"What's it going to do?" Hermione asked.
"Make you tell the truth of course!" Luna said happily.
"No," Draco said shortly.
"No! Absolutely not!" Hermione exclaimed.
"It will wear off in a few hours," Luna added.
"Hours!" Hermione exclaimed.
"That can't be safe!" Draco agreed.
"Luna," Hermione reasoned. "It's not going to take us hours to explain."
"It is completely safe. I've done this spell dozens of times!" Luna said. "But the soonest the spell can wear off is in a matter of hours. It will be extremely beneficial to your situation."
Hermione glanced at Draco. "Maybe we should…"
"She isn't a doctor," Draco said bitterly.
"Do you want to go to a real doctor?" Hermione threatened.
Luna stared at the duo's intimate conversation.
"No," Draco quietly admitted in defeat.
"Cast the spell, Luna," Hermione said in an authoritative manner.
"Ararnctius Factalius!" Luna exclaimed.
"I don't like how you didn't even warn us first!" Draco exclaimed.
"You won't regret it in the end," Luna said in a knowing tone.
"What now?" Hermione questioned.
"Begin telling me how you feel," Luna said calmly.
"Right now?" Hermione asked.
"Yes, right now," Luna clarified.
"I feel…scared," Hermione said admitting that she felt panicked. "Disgusted," Draco said simply, his face screwed into a expression of just that.
"Wonderful!" Luna exclaimed, taking note of their emotions.
"She is totally insane," Draco said with a frown.
"Wonderful?" Hermione questioned with a shake of her head.
"Yes!" Luna exclaimed before explaining. "Now you can freely tell me anything that you need to without being able to fear the consequences before speaking."
"Why would anyone want that?" Draco asked growing worried.
"What do you mean now?" Hermione asked in confusion. "You already casted the spell."
"Tell me what has been bothering you," Luna demanded ignoring both of their comments.
"Everything," Draco replied.
"Draco…and Ron…and Harry…" Hermione admitted sheepishly. This caused Draco to instantly become silent.
"Why are they such a bother to you?" Luna asked Hermione.
"Harry and Ron especially, are acting completely mad!" Draco said in answer for Hermione.
"Well…Draco was in my way this morning," Hermione concluded in thought. "And Ron and Harry won't listen to me."
Draco scowled feeling angry with Hermione's conclusions
"Oh," Luna said simply.
"Hermione humiliated me for absolutely no reason this morning," Draco intervened.
"I did not!" Hermione said shortly.
Luna stared as the duo continued to speak angrily towards the other.
"You were in my way!" Hermione said directly to Draco. "I warned you!"
"Yes you did! You can't lie!" Draco reminded her, in a childish manner.
"Then she didn't. You must have provoked her," Luna said matter-of-factly. "What happened, Hermione? Draco was blocking your way…?"
"I was just trying to get to Ron and Harry—because we were going to study," Hermione said irritably. "But then this…person steps in front of me!"
"I was trying to talk to you, not annoy you!" Draco defended.
"WHY?" Hermione questioned. "We've never really talked before!"
Luna eyes widened as the duo continued to argue.
"Well, I was having problems and I knew that they were because of you!" Draco continued.
"Well, I didn't know that!" Hermione exclaimed, rethinking her response. "…Not at the time anyway."
"You must have!" Draco argued stubbornly. "They were mutual sort of problems…you're probably just more tolerant."
"What problems?" Luna interrupted.
"I don't believe that Luna has anything that will help us," Draco snapped, ignoring Luna. "She just wants to snoop into our lives!"
"No she doesn't! She wants to help!" Hermione insisted. "That's why I said we should come to her!"
Hermione sighed in distress.
"Let it out," Luna soothed.
"She may want to help, but can she?" Draco asked as he sat down, feeling tired.
"What is the problem?" Luna asked forwardly.
"Of course…of course she can," Hermione reassured.
"Hermione and I seem to be interlinked by a spell," Draco said with a sigh. He was annoyed that he'd admitted that to Luna.
"You know it's not a spell!" Hermione countered with a roll of her eyes.
"What is it? True love perhaps?" Luna asked with a knowing smile.
How did I know that was coming? Hermione thought to herself bitterly. Draco simply choked.
"True…love?" Hermione said at last, glancing at Draco.
"Impossible," Draco said stubbornly, staring at his shoes.
"Why so?" Luna questioned.
"Well…it…" Draco stuttered.
"Because we…we've never even liked each other before…" Hermione said, shaking her head frantically.
"So?" Luna asked simply.
"So!" Hermione said, growing exasperated with her friend. "If you don't like someone you certainly can't be…in love with them."
"Besides, how can it just be love with it feels like this?" Draco added.
"Just love?" Luna asked simply, glancing back and forth between them.
"Maybe he's right…" Hermione agreed in thought. "It did come about quite quickly."
"Love is bigger than the two of you seem to realize," Luna said, shaking her head and sending the pale tendrils of her hair flying. "Just because you aren't sure whether or not you even like someone doesn't mean that your heart doesn't know that you love them."
"Why do you think you know all of this?" Draco demanded.
"True love," Luna began. "Is something that I have never experienced up here in the wizarding world so I cannot foresee how it might be treating you…"
"Well then how are you going to help?!" Hermione asked as her eyes grew wide in fear.
"Help you to stop being in love?" Luna asked in disbelief.
"Luna! Get serious right now!" Draco demanded. "This isn't just regular love!"
"Well…" Hermione said quietly, glancing at Draco. "Maybe it is…"
"What?" Draco asked incredulously.
"Well…what else could it be, Draco? Honestly," Hermione asked feeling flustered.
"If you're in love, it cannot be stopped," Luna said in that matter of fact tone of hers again.
"Stop saying things like that!" Draco demanded.
"WHAT?" Hermione yelled. "Are you…are you sure?"
"Why would you want me to break you out of the bondage of true love?" Luna questioned.
"For one, it's bondage…" Draco muttered.
"Because…we can't be in the…'bondage of true love', Luna," Hermione moaned in distress. "Don't you understand?"
"You're a Romeo and Juliet for our generation," Luna said in a whimsical manner. "Star-crossed lovers never meant to be, but still…"
"This is sickening," Draco said in disgust.
"But still what?" Hermione asked. Was there still something that could get this horrendous feeling from them?
"But still, here you are," Luna concluded. "Unable to separate yourselves."
"If this is regular love," Draco countered. "Then we can separate easy."
"We already tried that remember?" Hermione whispered her tone desperate.
"Yes, but…" Draco said quietly, in response.
"What is it?" Luna asked.
"It's not going to work…" Hermione admitted. "We can't separate."
"Literally can't separate?" Luna asked.
"It just causes agony," Draco explained.
"Well…no. We can," Hermione clarified. "We just…we can't be apart for very long."
"Why not?" Luna interrogated quietly. "You get upset? Does it make you sad?"
"Of course, we get upset!" Hermione practically screamed, her anger peaking.
"This is ridiculous," Draco concluded.
"Of course!" Hermione agreed shortly.
"Just because you're sad when you separate," Luna continued. "Doesn't mean that it isn't possible."
Unbelievable…. "You want to see then?" Hermione asked her tone dark.
"Yes please," Luna said calmly.
"Fine," Draco said shortly.
"Fine…" Hermione agreed shakily. "I'll go this way you go that way."
Draco swallowed before replying with a weak. "Okay."
Hermione began to walk to the right, feeling a part of her growing empty.
Draco moved in the opposite, gradually growing weaker and darker on the inside.
"I can't do this," Hermione admitted to Luna.
"Stop," Draco commanded Hermione who quickly flew back to his side.
"This is strain," Luna said in thought.
"Obviously," Hermione agreed.
"Clearly," Draco added.
"I think that we should go and talk to a specialist about these matters," Luna concluded.
"No!" Hermione argued, her chest growing tight.
"This is starting to seem very serious," Luna admitted.
"We don't need anyone," Draco said bitterly.
"It is but…let's just not," Hermione suggested.
"Why don't you want to see somebody else about this?" Luna questioned.
"Because nobody can help!" Hermione screamed in frustration. "Just…tell us how to break true love."
"The only thing that I can think of is death," Draco said quietly.
"I'm not going to die for—" Hermione exclaimed before Luna cut her off.
"That's premature," Luna reassured her friend.
"For me…?" Draco asked Hermione weakly.
Feeling guilty, Hermione's eyes darted briefly at Draco before going back to Luna.
"There must be something you can do," Hermione pleaded.
"Draco could be right though," Luna said in thought. "What will have to happen is your hearts will have to break, if you really don't want to be together."
"…Do we both have to die?" Hermione asked, curious.
"There are a few spells out there, but most aren't proven to work and they are risky…" Luna continued. "A broken heart is a delicate situation to deal with let alone to form…you won't have to die. Stopping your hearts and breaking your hearts are different things."
"I don't understand…" Hermione said with a shake of her head.
"A broken heart, one which has lost a love will be almost like living without a heart at all, living with a dead heart…" Luna said quietly. "At least until the next True Love comes around and that could be for an eternity."
Hermione sighed. "Wonderful…" She said sarcastically.
"Goodness," Draco said in thought.
"True Love doesn't grow on trees," Luna said shortly.
"Maybe we should just forget it…" Hermione said through a sigh.
"Forget about our lives," Draco asked. "Our reputations, our friends, our families?"
"It's only love Draco, as you said before," Luna said hollowly. "No one's asking you to leave everyone and everything else behind for Hermione."
"We could just…" Hermione said, trying not to cry. "Act like we did before…"
"Would that work?" Draco asked Luna, feeling an instant pain at the thought.
"If anything, it might break your hearts," Luna answered.
This is crazy. Draco thought, his heart feeling heavy.
"Draco, just allow Hermione into your life," Luna counseled. "And Hermione, let Draco into yours."
"What if we just become friends?" Draco asked.
"How long until this spell wears off from now?" Hermione questioned impatiently. "I'm scared I'm going to say something stupid?"
"A couple more hours!" Luna said pleasantly. Her eyes had widened because she had nearly forgotten about the spell.
Hermione sighed deeply.
"I think we should go," Draco muttered to Hermione.
"Go where exactly?" Hermione questioned miserably.
"Just try being together…" Luna suggested. "That's what you want, isn't it?"
"Anywhere else," Draco lies to Luna's face.
"Yes…" Hermione whispers while she stares at Draco.
"…Yes," Draco admits tentatively.
"Forget your friends or try a spell," Luna says, nearly mockingly. "Your choice."
