Past

"Mommy!" Matthew screams, running into the kitchen. Rachel turns around from the sink, watching as he comes in. "Daddy is gonna get me!" The four year old tells her, launching himself into her arms. She laughs lightly, holding Matthew tightly to her.

"I'm gonna get you Matty!" She hears Finn yell from the other room. She laughs again as Matthew shrieks in her arms. Sure enough, Finn comes bounding into the kitchen, laughing when he sees Matt clinging to her.

"Protect me, mommy!" Her son screams in her arms as Finn comes towards them. She laughs again, moving before Finn can get them.

"I've got you, baby!" She assures her son, slipping away from Finn again. She laughs loudly as Matthew tells her to run away. She does so, slipping into the living room. Matty giggles uncontrollably as she zig-zags through the house.

She looks behind her, seeing that Finn is no longer there. Smiling she looks at Matt.

"I think we lost him!" She whispers, looking around the living room. Matt nods his head in agreement, looking around as well. She moves back towards the kitchen quietly, peering around.

She jumps when Matt lets out a shriek and suddenly, Finn's hands wrap around her waist. She screams slightly as he turns her around to face him.

"Got you." He says victoriously. Matt is laughing and squirming in her arms as Finn holds onto both of them.

"Daddy! You won!" The four year old laughs, holding his arms out to his father. Finn takes him from her, pulling him in for a big hug. She watches in awe as her husband interacts with their son.

"I know!" Finn smiles, putting Matt down on the ground. He looks over at the clock and then back at their son. "It looks like it's time for someone's bath and then a story." Finn tells Matt, who groans.

"I don't need a bath! I smell good." The boy bargains, giving his mom and dad the puppy eyes. She giggles lightly when Finn rolls his eyes.

"Well, both mommy and I think you need a bath. C'mon. I'll even let you use bubbles." Finn replies and Matt thinks about this for a minute before nodding his head and running up the stairs. She smiles at her son and turns around to go back to the kitchen.

She shrieks when she's all of a sudden turned around. Finn presses his lips to her in a deep kiss and she melts in his arms. She moans into his mouth as she allows his tongue to slip in. Eventually, he pulls back, breathing heavily.

"I love you." He says, pecking her lips again.

"I love you, too." She whispers back and he lets her go so he can go give their son a bath.

She breathlessly walks into the kitchen, ready to finish the dishes. By the time she does finish, Matt is done with his bath and Finn is reading him his favorite bedtime story. She stands in the doorway as she allows her husband to finish and tuck their son in. Matthew's eyes are fluttering closed when she comes over to kiss his head goodnight. She takes Finn's outstretched hand and walks from the room with him.

He goes to turn off all the lights in the house as she goes to get changed. She slips on her pajamas and then into bed. She lays there, a book in her hand as Finn comes back in and gets changed. She looks up as he goes into their bathroom and brushes his teeth. He catches her looking at him when he finishes and smiles as he shuts off the light and closes the door.

"What?" He says as he shuts their bedroom door and finds her still looking at him.

"Come here," she tells him, patting the bed next to her. "I want to talk to you about something." She finishes and he doesn't hesitate to slip into their bed and wrap his arms around her.

"What is it?" He asks once she's snuggled into his chest. He strokes her hair as she manages enough courage to speak.

"Matthew is perfect," she begins. "He's so smart and I love him so much. He loves us and watching you play with him today really got me thinking. Wouldn't it be nice, you know, having another kid for him to play with and for us to take care of?" She stops for a minute and leans away from him so she can look at him.

"Rach-" he starts, but she purses her lips and holds up a finger.

"I just-I just thought that Matt is going to be five soon and he could really use a sibling. Having Matt was a wonderful experience and I wouldn't mind going through it again. My show is finishing in four months, so I thought that would be the perfect time to have another child. I can take a break from Broadway, because it will always be there for me once I come back, just like it was after I had Matt. I'm ready to have another kid, Finn." She finishes and he looks at her, blinking a few times.

"You want to have another?" He asks, like he didn't hear her the first time.

"Yes. I completely understand if you don't want to, Finn. I just thought you could think ab-" she's cut off as he kisses her hard. She's a little caught off guard, but she soon reciprocates the kiss.

"I would love to have another child with you, Rachel Hudson." He tells her and she giggles.

"Then, Mr. Hudson, we better get started," she says, straddling on top of him. She stops for a minute and pushes some of the hair back from his eyes. "Let's make a baby." She whispers and a grin engulfs his entire face.

Present

He visits Santana occasionally now, not wanting to deal with his friends now. All they do is avoid talk that revolves around kids or wives or anything that could somehow relate back to him and his situation. It just all seems to piss him off now.

He always imagined that when they all finally met up with each other again, he would be able to talk to them and tell them how Matt is doing in a new sport he decided to play. Or how Rachel was working on a new show and couldn't wait for them to see it. He never once thought that the next time they would all see each other would be when he doesn't have a son, or a wife, and his best friend is in the hospital.

Almost everyone is here now. Quinn came in the day before, catching a flight as soon as she heard the news. Puck has been here for a few hours now and everyone can feel the tension between him and Quinn. (The word going around is that Quinn's husband left her and she now shares joint custody of their daughter). Mike and Tina brought their children up and have been here for a few days. Mercedes is on her way after finally getting some time off. The only people who aren't here are Emma Schue, who had to stay home with their kids, Sam and Brittany, who are said to still be in London.

Whenever he comes to visit, it's always for no more than an hour. Santana is upset with that fact, but it's hard being around everyone, including his own brother. Don't get him wrong, he loves Kurt to death, but he's been avoiding him for the better part of five years for a reason. The only time he has really seen Kurt is when they go home for Christmas. New York is a big city and somehow he has managed to avoid him.

He's just leaving Santana's room when he bumps into Quinn. She looks different, aged a little bit. Her eyes don't shine as bright as they used to and she looks sad, much more than she had when she left Lima all those years ago.

"Sorry." She mutters, looking towards the ground.

"Quinn?" He says, noticing her downcast look. She looks up at him, a sad expression on her face.

"It's weird, ya know." She laughs a little.

"What is?" He asks and she just looks up at him.

"How we thought life would be easy after we graduated," she begins. "How we thought that we were untouchable. It all seems so silly now. Life wasn't supposed to be such a bitch, it wasn't supposed to throw us around like we didn't matter." She chokes out. He sighs heavily, unable to look her in the eyes.

"Life," he starts. "Is just testing us." He finishes.

"Testing us for what, Finn?" She snaps. "What do we need to be tested for?" She scoffs. "To see how long it takes before we break? To see how fast we give up? There isn't a point, Finn. Life isn't testing us, it's destroying us." She finishes in a haste, pushing past him to go into Santana's room. He turns quickly, watching her.

"Quinn," he says and she stops where she is but doesn't turn around. "I'm sorry about your divorce." He tells her, a genuine tone filling his voice. He can see her sigh and she slowly turns to face him again.

"I'm sorry about your son, Finn. You never deserved that." She whispers before turning away again and going into Santana's room.

He looks at the empty space for a moment before turning around and walking back to the waiting room. Everyone watches him as he enters the room again (even a certain brown-eyed girl) and he manages a small smile heading to the door. He makes it to the main hallway when he hears the light footsteps following after him. He doesn't bother to turn around and acknowledge whoever it is because he just wants to get out and leave.

"I hope you're not running away from me." The small voice says and it's enough to make him stop right where he is. He turns slowly around and she just looks up at him with her big eyes. She has her arms crossed tightly around her chest, probably due to the extreme awkwardness emitting from both of them.

"Uh, no. I just have other things to do." He replies and she looks at the ground.

"You never really stay anymore." She mentions and he shifts uncomfortably.

"Like I said, I have other things I have to do." He answers again and she just sadly smiles.

"Finn-" she's cut off by the sound of the main doors opening. A look of shock registers on her face as she looks past him, making him turn around.

He imagines that his face must look exactly like hers by this point because he can't believe what he's seeing.

Sam Evans and Brittany Pierce are walking straight towards them with smiles on their faces. Their hands are clasped perfectly together and he notices the way Brittany's other hand rests protectively on her stomach. As they near, no one says a word. Finally, Sam is the first to break the silence.

"Finn! Rachel! It's been a long time!" He says and he drops Brittany's hand to throw his arms around Finn. He is in so much shock that he can't he register what is happening. Brittany grabs him next, laughs coming from her mouth.

"Wh-what?" He stutters and they both just laugh.

"We heard about Santana. We both wanted to come see her." Sam answers for the both of them. Brittany just nods and smiles alongside of him, like a little puppy dog.

After Finn doesn't say anything, Sam and Brittany take it upon themselves to grab him and Rachel and pull them into the waiting room again. All their friends stare in utter disbelief at Sam and Brittany, but the two just laugh and begin to hug everyone.

Rachel stands beside him, still in shock. He guesses that he's pretty shocked too because they haven't seen the two in years. His mind flashes to Santana suddenly, and like she can read his mind, Rachel looks up at him.

"Well, this will be interesting." She mutters.

Brittany has been in Santana's room for over an hour and everyone is anxious to see what's going on. Sam has taken it upon himself to talk to everyone in the room about their lives, and Finn happens to be his third victim.

"London is amazing, Finn! You should visit there sometime." Sam gushes and Finn wearily notices Rachel looking at them from her corner of the room. He knows she is straining to hear what they're talking about, it actually annoys him a little bit.

"That's great, Sam." He fakes a smile.

"Enough about me, how about you? How are you and Rachel?" He freezes for a second, trying to figure out how to handle this.

"Well, we-" he begins, but Sam is quick to cut him off.

"And what about your kid? Didn't you have a son? I can't remember! Last time we saw you guys was when Rachel was early in the pregnancy. What's his name? Michael? Mitchell?" Sam starts thinking of the name of his son and he watches Rachel's face drain of all color, meaning she must have heard the question.

"Matthew-" he grits his teeth and Sam's face lights up.

"Oh yeah! Matthew! How is the kid? Is he a little football player? Or is he a more musical like Rachel? I would love to meet-" Sam rambles and Finn can't help but explode.

"Matthew's dead, Sam!" He shouts and everyone turns to look that the two. "And Rachel and I aren't together anymore. Maybe, just maybe, if you didn't ditch us all and move away, you would have known. Maybe if you didn't change your number, you would have gotten the funeral notice for my son." The room is completely quiet and Sam's face is red with embarrassment.

Before Sam can open his mouth, Finn is already walking out of the room. He happens to just kick a chair while leaving too, not caring if it's childish.

By the time he gets outside into the cold air, he can't breathe. He's trying to hold back everything, not wanting it to spill over. He feels like he's dying, like his heart is being ripped from his chest. He doesn't know how much longer he can handle everything. The weight of the world is crushing him and it's not much longer before it squishes him like a bug.

"Finn?" A tiny voice brings him out of his pity. He turns and she's standing in front of him, eyes watery.

"What Rachel?" He says through his teeth and she's taken aback by his tone.

"What's your problem?" She asks, her nose scrunching. He looks at her in confusion. How can she ask him that? How does she have the audacity to ask him that? He honestly doesn't know what to say, he just looks at her. So many emotions are running through him and he feels that if he acknowledges any one of them, he's going to explode.

So he just laughs bitterly.

She stares at him, anger clearly expressed on her face. He knows that look so well, that being her angry face. He hasn't seen it directed at him in a really long time, but seeing it now, makes him hate it so much.

"I don't understand what's funny." She snaps and he rolls his eyes at her.

"I don't have a problem. You're my problem, Rachel. God, I forgot how much of a pain in the ass you are." He murmurs, but she still hears him and gasps.

"I will not take this from you, Finn Hudson! You are disrespectful, deplorable, and you make it seem like you never even cared about Matthew at all!" She screams at him. She covers her mouth instantly, regret crossing her emotions. He stands there, frozen. It takes him a second to let what she said sink in.

"How could you think I didn't care?" His voice cracks.

"Finn, I didn't mean that. I'm-" she tries, but he doesn't let her finish.

"How would you even know? You left me. I was broken about his death and you left me. You didn't even say goodbye," he says and she sniffs a little. "All I got was a lousy note saying, 'I can't do this anymore' and that was it." He finishes.

"You don't understand, Finn." She tries, a tear slipping from her eye.

"I do understand. I do, honestly," he whispers. "But, I don't think I can do this anymore, Rachel." He breaks and she stares up at him.

"What are you saying?" She asks, confusion in her voice.

"I'm done trying to get you back, Rachel. I can't take the heartache anymore. I'm leaving New York," she gasps lightly, but he continues. "The reason I came here to begin with was for you. Everything I've ever done was for you, but I don't have you anymore. I'm leaving and I'm never coming back." He closes his eyes, taking a deep breath. He turns quickly on his heel, walking towards his car.

"Finn!" She calls after him. "Do not walk away from me!" She screams in the parking lot. He stops for a moment and turns around. She's full on crying now, and it reminds him of their breakup junior year.

"Have a nice life, Rachel." He says before turning around and walking to his car, ignoring her calls for him.

He's done with Rachel Berry and he's done with New York.
