Chapter 15
A week after Sam's approval on the job offered to Quinn, she was now ready to start working. Sam left for work in the morning as she started her job as a mom. She gave Abby a bath while Andrew was munching on his breakfast. It wasn't really that hard to give Abby a bath. She followed everything her mother tells her to do. Although, she feels like Abby's gonna be a real Daddy's girl. There would be times where Quinn would give Abby a bath but she obviously doesn't want to so she will cry. She won't stop crying until Sam will do the job. Thankfully that morning, Abby was a Momma's girl.
Andrew was sitting on the dining table while Quinn and Abby were in the bathroom with the door opened so she can keep an eye on both her kids. Suddenly, their door bell rang. Andrew looked at the door but didn't move. Quinn was still busy with Abby so the visitor needs to wait before the door will be opened. The door bell rang the second time and Andrew was fighting urges to open the door. He thought it was his daddy and he really wanted to open it for him. Another door bell was heard and Andrew can't control his feet anymore. He got out of his seat and grabbed his baby ladder to reach for the door knob. It didn't have its double lock so Andrew had an easy way to open it. When Quinn heard the door opened, she had a quick panic attack. Her son was being too naughty again. "Shit." She said as she immediately dried her daughter. She went out and saw Andrew with an Asian girl at the door.
"Andrew! What did I tell you about opening that door?!" Quinn was mad. Both her and Sam have told Andrew many times that he isn't allowed to open their front door. He's too young and he doesn't know everyone who knocks. He'll only be put to danger if he did.
"I thought it was Daddy." Andrew said, pouting.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Evans. I didn't know the kid would answer the door." The Asian girl said.
"Come here." She ordered her son and the boy quickly moved to Quinn's back. "It's fine. Sorry, I was giving my daughter a bath. Are you Tina?" She asked the girl at the door.
"Yes. Mrs. Figgins sent me here. The ingredients are in the vehicle. I can bring them in when you're ready." Tina said and smiled.
"Uhm, yeah. Come in, come in. I'll just finishing clothing my daughter then we can bring down the stuff." Quinn said and smiled as the girl entered. "Have you had your breakfast?" She asked.
"Yeah. I'm good. Thanks for the offer."
"Okay, you can sit on the couch for a while. I'll be out in a sec." Quinn said as she entered the room. Tina sat on the couch and Andrew sat beside her.
"Hi. What's your name?" Tina asked the boy.
"Andrew." He replied.
"Nice to meet you. I'm Tina." She smiled. "You know, you shouldn't be opening doors. You don't know who's on the other side."
"But daddy always rings the bell when he goes home."
"It's not always your dad who's gonna ring the bell. Strangers will ring the bell too. They can't just enter without an adult opening the door." Tina said.
"What's an adult?" He asked, confused with what the Asian was talking about.
"Adults are people older than you. Like your mommy or your daddy." Tina giggled. This kid has a lot in mind to say. He seems very bright and friendly.
Andrew nodded at the girl. "What are you doing here? Are you mommy's friend, too?"
"I'll be working with your mommy. She bakes, right?"
"Yes. She makes yummy food." Andrew smiled. "Do you make yummy food, too?" He asked.
"Well, I try. How about I bake some and let you taste it one day? You like that?"
"I love to eat!" Andrew said and the two laughed. Suddenly, Quinn went out with Abby.
"Okay, I'm ready. I'm sorry; I'm late for our appointment." Quinn said as she placed down Abby on her walker and fixed herself.
"No, it's fine. I guess I'm just quite early." She explained. "I can get the ingredients now if you want to. The bakery opens in about an hour. We can serve your cupcakes and bread cake anytime you want."
Quinn looked at the clock and it was already 9 in the morning. "Yeah. We can start now. I'll help you unload the ingredients."
"No, it's fine. There aren't a lot anyway." Tina said and Quinn agreed. She led her to the door and Tina unloaded the ingredients. Just seeing those ingredients, excitement ran through Quinn's veins. She can't believe she was gonna start baking for other people besides her family and friends. Other than that, she was gonna get paid to do what she loves.
When Tina finally finished unloading the ingredients, they started working. The list was to make 60 cupcakes and 20 bread cakes. It was just the first day and they were going to experiment first if people will like the new addition to the menu. For the baking part, the oven Quinn has can store 12 cupcakes with 2 bread cakes at a time. Preparation time was shortened to just 10 minutes per tray since Tina was helping. In between the baking process, Quinn told Andrew to take a bath already. They were going to the bakery to see how the first day of her goods will sell. 2 and a half hours later, they were done.
"Mrs. Evans, I think we baked about 72 cupcakes. I lost count." Tina said, giggling and drooling at the good looking cupcakes.
"No, it's fine. There were enough ingredients anyway. I purposely baked more than enough so we can have some for ourselves. You can take home some too if you want." Quinn smiled as she continued washing the dishes while Tina was boxing the cupcakes.
"Oh, wow. Thank you. They are certainly looking very delicious." Tina giggled.
"Well, go on. Try one now and tell me how it tastes." Quinn told her.
"Okay." Tina said and tried the velvet cupcakes. She took a small bite and it was enough for her to smile big. "Oh my God, Mrs. Evans! This is so good!"
"Thanks, Tina. Being at home and in the kitchen a lot gives you experience to make these cupcakes good." Quinn giggled, feeling flattered to how the girl reacted to her cupcakes.
"Did you study culinary?" She asked.
"No. I studied journalism and film but my husband and I agreed that I'll just stay home with the kids after our marriage."
"Wow. I really hope I get married one day, too. My boyfriend hasn't popped the question yet and we've been together for about 3 years now."
Quinn laughed at the girl's frustration. "It'll come, Tina. Maybe he's just waiting for the right time. I mean, Sam proposed to me after 2 years of being together. Our plan was to get married after my film school which were 2 more years after. But we lived together when we moved here in New York about a couple of months after his proposal."
"You guys waited that long? Wow, that's what commitment means." Tina was surprised. Not a lot would survive an engagement that long.
"Actually, no. We got married a year after because of some personal problems with Andrew."
"So... You had Andrew before the wedding?" Tina said, hoping her words weren't offending her.
"Uhm... Yes. Andrew was actually left by her real mom in front of our apartment door when he was 4 months old. We treated him as our own since then."
"Oh... Uhm. I'm sorry. I didn't know..."
"It's fine, it's fine. I mean, that's no secret, really. We just haven't told him yet 'cause he's still too young to understand. But maybe one day, we will." Quinn smiled at her. She was really open about this topic as she didn't want to hide anything from her son's identity. Being an adopted just doesn't make her love him any less.
Tina felt like the topic was becoming quite awkward. She didn't want to dwell on it anymore. It was her son anyway so she didn't have a say on their personal life. She decided to change the topic in a happier one or which she thought was. "So, how was the wedding then?" She asked, giggling.
"Oh, it's nothing fancy. Really." Quinn giggled too.
"Well, fanciness isn't really necessary in a wedding. Intimacy is what's important. How did it feel walking down the aisle? I've always imagined myself walking down and crying. Did you cry?" Tina asked and she didn't notice that she was asking too much. Quinn had to tell her that she didn't have the ultimate wedding experience on her own wedding.
Quinn tried to giggle. "We...actually, got married by a judge. It was just the two of us and a couple of witnesses. We haven't had that full wedding experience."
"Well, do you plan to?" She asked as she finished boxing. Quinn was done washing the equipment used as well and she sat on one of the chairs.
"I don't know. Ever since the kids came, we haven't really talked about an actual wedding."
"Do you want to?" Tina asked, sitting opposite Quinn.
Quinn was silenced for a while. Tina has to know the answer. Every girl knows the answer to that question. "Of course. Come on. Every girl has her dream wedding. Walking down the aisle, you see the people you care most about. The people who care about you. Then, there he is. Standing at the altar, waiting for you to be with him forever. Exchanging vows. The kiss..." She stopped right there. She was starting to get emotional. What if they went though that kind of wedding? What would've it felt like?
"Have you tried talking to him about it?" Tina asked.
"Well, when we got married, we did talk about a church wedding when we're finally over our personal problem at that time. I just hope he remembered. I mean, we have a bank account savings. There must be some part of that fund for an actual wedding."
Tina smiled at the girl to ease the tension she was obviously feeling about her marriage. "I hope you get that dream wedding one day."
"Thanks. I'll remind myself to invite you." Both of them giggled. "One day, maybe. But right now, we gotta get these pastries to the shop." Quinn said as they stood up. Tina unloaded the pastries to the delivery truck while Quinn fixed the house and her kids before leaving.
Tina drove the delivery truck while Quinn and the kids drove the Mini Cooper she rented the day before to go to the shop. They got there at about 11 in the morning and started preparing the pastries. She met up with Mrs. Figgins first to inform her that the pastries are ready for sale. There weren't much customers yet at that time and Quinn was just on one table with her kids, waiting for some response about the pastries.
At lunch time, Mrs. Figgins told them to order anything they want for free. The shop sold pastas as well, so they just ordered that. Andrew ordered a meatball spaghetti while Quinn ordered a club sandwich and white sauced pasta for her to share with Abby.
In the middle of lunch time, the first customer of her pastry arrived. They were a couple and decided to try on the new product. They ordered a cupcake each and some tea. When Quinn and the kids were finally done with lunch, she noticed that the couple went back for another cupcake each to take home. They complimented the cupcake to Mrs. Figgins, who was at the cashier. Suddenly, a waiter went up to Quinn and told her Mrs. Figgins was asking for her to come over to the counter. Quinn asked Tina to watch over the two kids for a while.
"Here she is. Our new head pastry chef and the creator of the Red Velvet Cupcakes." Mrs. Figgins introduce.
"Hi there. We just wanted to say how good your cupcakes were. We had to take some home 'cause it was so delicious."
"Thank you so much. I appreciate it." Quinn said and smiled. "We hope you come back again next time."
"Oh, we'll definitely be back soon." The girl said and smiled.
"Have a nice day. Thanks again." Quinn smiled as the couple went out.
"Good job, Quinn. That was a good first sell." Mrs. Figgins smiled at her. She was really lucky to have Quinn be a part of their team.
"Hoping it won't be the last though." Quinn giggled.
"I'm sure it won't be. Long day ahead. We still have about 7 hours before closing."
"Oh, is it okay though if I leave before closing time? Sam will be home by 6 and I still have to prepare for dinner."
"Yeah, sure. Of course. You can go anytime you want. The kids are seem to be getting bored around here already." She said as Quinn nodded her head. She went back to her kids and informed Tina that her first sold cupcakes were a success. Tina congratulated her and told her she knew it already. Her cupcakes were really delicious.
They stayed for a couple more hours and for the rest of their stay. They sold about 53 cupcakes and 11 bread cakes. All of them were greatly complimented by the customers. They all promised to come back and by more. In summary, it was a successful first day for Quinn.
The three of them left the shop at about 6 o 'clock. The plan of going home before 6 was quite a failure. There were so many customers complimenting the new head pastry chef that she just couldn't go home easily. All the hard work and effort she exerted that morning was paying off. She was feeling more and more energetic instead of tiredness with all the praises she got with the pastries.
When Quinn turned to the street of their house, she saw Sam's car pulling by their drive way. Yikes. She thought. Her husband got home without food on the table. She knows how tired he was from work and scared that he might get pissed once he sees there's no food to eat yet.
She fastened her speed and pulled by the driveway just before Sam could get inside the house. Sam saw them and waited for them to come out of the car. Andrew saw his father and ran for him, which made Sam pick him up and hug. Quinn went out of the car with a sleeping Abby. She locked the door and went to the door to her husband.
"Hey, babe. I'm really sorry. We lost track of time at the shop and left late." Quinn said as he greeted Sam with a kiss.
"Oh, it's cool. Did you cook dinner before you left a while ago?" Sam asked as he got inside the house. Quinn followed him.
"That's the problem. I thought I'd be able to come home before you could to cook but unfortunately, you got home first."Quinn apologized as she went to the room to lie the sleeping Abby down. Sam brought Andrew down too as he immediately went to Cooper. Sam followed Quinn to the room. "We'll just order Chinese food if that's okay?"
"Yeah, sure. Fine with me." Sam said as he removed his shoes. "How did it go at the shop?"
Quinn went behind him and tried to massage his back. He looked really stressed out from the day. "Speechless, Sam. Everything went well. The customers loved my pastries. I can't explain how happy I am right now." She said, controlling her excitement so that the baby won't wake up.
Sam giggled. "It was pretty obvious for everything to go well. You make the best pastries in town." Sam said, closing his eyes in relaxation to Quinn's massage. "Congrats babe. I'm really happy for you."
"How about you? How did it go?" She asked.
"Ugh. Don't remind me anymore. My boss kept saying I researched the wrong topics for this month's theme at the Museum. Luckily, I had my co-workers to back me up and prove him wrong."
"What happened, then?"
"He apologized about it but I still feel pissed, I don't want to see him just yet. He gave me so much headache today."
Quinn kissed the top of his head. "Well, at least you're home now. Time to relax." She giggled. "I'm gonna go order now, okay? Keep an eye on Abby." She said and walked out of the room. After a few seconds, she went back and peaked at the door. "Oh...and your son did something a while ago. Ask him about it." She added and left.
Less than an hour later, their food arrived. Dinner had a lot of talks. Quinn chatted about the success of her first day and how excited she was the next morning. Sam talked to Andrew about what he did. Andrew said sorry about opening the main door that morning and promised not to do it again. Sam also talked about how his job was going so far. He was earning a lot already that they've finished paying for their house a month ago and still has a lot in store in their savings bank account. Finally, it was completely their own.

It's the fourth day of Quinn as the head pastry chef but this time, she didn't go to the shop anymore. Their required pastries for the day were levelled up to 100 cupcakes and 50 bread cakes. It finally hit Quinn how tiring the job was. Now that the needed pastries were more, it took her more time to bake. She and Tina have decided to start earlier that day so they can finish early as well. The shop's customers were also doubled because of Quinn's products. Quinn took the time to sleep the whole afternoon with Andrew and Abby. She just woke up an hour before Sam came home so that she can cook dinner.
Dinner was ready 15 minutes before 7 and Sam was still not home. About 30 minutes later, he was finally pulling by the drive way. When Sam entered the house, he was carrying a lot of paper bags, his work bag and a bouquet of roses.
"Daddy's home." Sam called out. Quinn was in the kitchen while Andrew and Abby were sitting on the couch, watching some baby Looney tunes. Andrew stood up and ran to kiss his father.
Quinn went out of the kitchen and saw Sam brought home a lot. "Hey. You're home late."
"I know. I'm sorry. I just had to pass by some stores before going home." Sam placed down the bags and went closer to Quinn. "And this one's for my lovely wife." He handed her the flowers and kissed her on the lips.
Quinn kissed him back and accepted the flowers. "Ahhh. It's pay day. Thanks, babe. These are very lovely." Sam always made sure to buy his wife a bouquet of flowers every pay day. It was just something he likes to do monthly to show some sweetness to his wife.
"And guess what I have for you?" Sam asked Andrew. He grabbed one of the paper bags and hid it behind him.
"I wanna see, Daddy!" Andrew kept jumping, trying to reach the paper bag.
"Not until daddy gets 10 kisses from Andrew." Sam was teasing the kid.
"Okay. Kiss, daddy!" He was lifting his hands, trying to reach his father's face as Sam carried Andrew.
"Let's see if you're practicing your numbers." Sam said as Andrew kissed him.
"1... 2... 3... 4... 5... 6... 7..." Andrew stopped counting.
"What's next after 7?" Sam asked, giggling.
Andrew was quiet for a while. He was trying to think about the numbers Quinn taught him. "Uhmm..."
"You can do it, come on." He was encouraging his son. He was 3 counts away from the prize.
"The two circles, Andrew. Remember? Eh..." Quinn started for him.
"Eight?" He guessed.
"Very good!" Sam said as Andrew kissed his father for the 8th time. "Okay, what's next?" He asked.
Andrew looked at him for a while until he realized, he can do it anymore. He smiled and buried his face on Sam's neck, giggling.
Sam couldn't help but laugh as well. "Alright. 8 kisses are enough." He said and gave the paper bag to Andrew. When he opened it, it was a remote control car. It wasn't that big but it was big enough for little Andrew.
"I'm gonna play with it now!" Andrew said as he started opening the box.
"Nah-uh, Andrew. Its dinner time then bath time then sleeping time. You can play with your tomorrow." Quinn warned the child as she finished setting up the table for dinner.
"Dada!" Abby shouted, calling the attention of her father.
"Of course! How could I forget my princess?" Sam grabbed the other paper bag and sat beside his daughter. It was a giraffe stuffed toy. Sam didn't know why he bought that. He just thought it was cute and that Abby will love it. He was right anyway. Abby immediately played with her new stuffed toy. Sam carried the little girl and kissed her.
"You like dada's gift?" Sam asked his daughter even though she can't answer that.
"Okay, everyone. It's time to eat. Let's go." Quinn ordered and Sam went to the table while Andrew was still busy with his toy.
"Come on, Andrew. We'll play with that later. Time to eat first." Sam told his son but he still didn't listen.
"Andrew, if you don't get up and come to the table, mommy will take away your toy." That was enough momma words for Andrew to follow his mother.
They finished eating dinner and spent some family time, watching a Disney film on the couch. After a while, they decided to call it a night.

The bakery shop only opens every Mondays to Fridays. Saturday and Sunday were their off days and Quinn was thankful for that. Sam doesn't have work on Saturdays and Sundays as well so both of them can spend time with the kids. Quinn decided to sleep in that day as she's been getting up really early everyday and that week has been work, work and work all morning. Quinn woke up a bit around 7 when Sam got up. She told him that she needed to sleep more so he just let her go back to sleep. Sam did the mom duties that morning. At around 10 o 'clock, Quinn finally woke up fully and energized. She got the right amount of rest and sleep she needed. She went out and saw her kids and Sam playing outside. It seems like Sam bought Andrew something again. It was a football. Abby on the other hand got an elephant stuffed toy. Was Sam trying to complete a zoo with Abby's stuffed toys? She just shrugged it off. At least, the kids were happy even if Sam was spending a lot.
During lunch time, Sam told Quinn that they were going shopping that afternoon. Quinn was surprised. Did Sam get paid twice this month? Why has he been spending a lot lately? When they were finally alone in the room while Quinn dressed up, she opened up about it.
"Did they raise your salary this month? You seem to be spending a lot, babe. Not that I'm complaining. I'm just wondering." She said, brushing her hair.
"I don't think it's bad that I spend some for my family. I mean, why not if we can right?" Sam giggled. "After finally paying the house fully, it really felt like a big weight was lifted you know? No more worrying about the house. Just us and other needs."
"Well, okay...if you say so." Quinn said. She did want to open up the topic about saving up for a wedding but she chickened out when she was about to tell him.
The family went off to shop and shop. Andrew and Abby got some new clothes while Sam bought himself new shoes. 1 rubber shoes and 1 leather shoes. Quinn bought some more equipment for baking and she felt like the happiest woman alive. Buying kitchenware is her guilty pleasure.
Sunday came and it was the last day before Andrew starts schooling. Family time was spent once more and when afternoon came, there was a bell rang on the door.
"I'll get it." Quinn said from the kitchen. When she opened the door, she was surprised to see a delivery guy . Not only that but the truck that he brought was a lot bigger than just for small packages
"Good afternoon. Is Mr. Samuel Evans home?" The delivery guy asked.
Quinn was confused to what he could need from her husband. "Uhm... Yeah. Hold on." He told the guy as she called out Sam. When Sam went to the door, he saw the delivery man and smiled to what finally came.
He signed some papers as the delivery boys finally unloaded their package. 1 mountain bike and 1 bike for a kid. Quinn couldn't believe what she was seeing. This is spending too much than what she thought Sam had spent days before. "What is that?" Quinn asked Sam.
"I just thought it'd be cool to buy a bike for me and Andrew. I saw him looking amazed at those bikes in Baby Looney Tunes the other day. I wanna surprise him." Sam said with so much excitement. Quinn wasn't feeling the same. Her face could tell as her eye brow was raised on him. He didn't mind though. "Thank man." Sam told the delivery guys as they closed the door with the bikes now inside.
"Seriously, Sam? You bought him a bike just because you saw him smile at those in the television?" Quinn asked, rolling her eyes.
"Yeah. Come on. It's fine. I'm sure he'll love it." Sam said and brought the baby bike to the living for Andrew to see. The look on the little boy's face was a weakness for Quinn. Whenever she sees her son smiling hard, she couldn't help but agree with what Sam was doing. Even if it was too much, sometimes. She just let it pass until the night. The rest of the afternoon was spent with Sam and Andrew, learning to ride the bike at the street of their house. There weren't much cars passing by their street anyway. Quinn spent some quality time with Abby by trying to speak. The day ended with Abby adding one more word added to her vocabulary. Boy. She can now say the word Boy. Quinn wasn't if she'll feel proud or scared with her new word. She was sure though that the word boyfriend won't be in her vocabulary for the next 20 years.
Sleeping time finally came and Sam and Quinn were both lying in bed. "Hey, babe. I was thinking...what if we buy another dog? I was thinking of a poodle." Sam said and Quinn has had it. She had to tell Sam about how she feels.
"Sam... You know I love you but... Don't you think you're spending too much in so little time?" She asked. "I mean, why would we even need another dog? There's nothing wrong with Cooper."
"I just thought maybe we could have another one. Quinn, I'm spending for our kids...for you and me. It's not like I'm throwing money to a ball of fire." Sam said, giggling. "The kids come first, remember?"
"Well, it's not really something that the kids need or want. You just spend and spend on whatever you want." Quinn looked at him. "I'm not holding you off the budget, babe. You earned that money and it's just right that you spend it to whatever you want. But, I'm just thinking about our other expenses which are more important, you know. Saving up shouldn't stop."
"Babe, we have enough budgets for our bills, our food and other needs. What more can we save up that's more important than what we want?"
This is it. No backing out. Quinn had to say it. "What about our savings for our wedding?"
"Wedding? Uhh..." Sam placed his hand on her forehead. "You okay, babe? If you're not aware, we got married about 2 years ago, remember?" Sam laughed, thinking she was pulling a prank on him.
Quinn just looked at him. He'll never understand a woman's mind. "We were married by a judge...with 2 witnesses and just us."
"Isn't that what's important? The bride and the groom?" Sam asked, now feeling confused as well.
"Forget it..." Quinn finally gave up. Maybe those dream weddings of a girl don't happen to everyone. Besides, he was right. The only thing that matters the most was him and her. She curled up and faced the other way as she lied down her head.
Sam didn't let her go easily. "Babe, are you mad? Do you want another wedding?" Sam asked.
"Nevermind that, Sam. I was just... It was nothing." Quinn tried to giggle to remove his suspicions.
"Quinn, come on." Sam moved in closer to her, trying to make her face him. "We can save up for that if you want to."
Apparently, he forgot about saving up for a wedding. Wedding in what? 10 years from now? Quinn thought. She didn't want to talk about it anymore as she didn't want to sound like a demanding wife. "No, it's fine. You're right. I was just messing with you." Quinn giggled and looked at him. "Go to sleep, we still need to bring Andrew to school tomorrow. First day of classes." She leaned up and kissed him on the lips.
"Well... Uhm... Okay. Goodnight, babe." He kissed her on the head once more.
Quinn tried to close her eyes and pretend as though she was already sleeping. In all honesty, she was pissed off with Sam. He totally forgot about their planned wedding. He was acting like he doesn't care at all about the actual wedding. She just decided to sleep it off to forget the irritation she was feeling. Hopefully, Andrew in school uniform the next morning will make her forget about all these wedding shenanigans.
