I hate walls.
They get in the way and block everything. They separate things and people who need each other. Creating them take only a little work, but tearing them down is mountain of work.
For the couple of days Kim and Maria have lived in my house. I'm glad that they're with me and all, but I feel like I'm getting nowhere with Kim. She's basically always in bed and if she's not in bed she all over me. She follows me around, silently or cuddle with me while I'm watching T.V or just be around me. I don't mind that though, I actually liked it. Now, I'm just worried about her.
Maria's being affected by Kim depressed behavior. She's acting out, talking back and, worst of all, hitting. She won't eat because Kim won't. She cries in her sleep she's so hungry. It kills me being right there seeing her cry and not being able to do anything. I would just hold her and until she cried herself to sleep.
Its morning, after a long night, and I'm cooking breakfast. I have a plan though. I went through Kim's music on her phone and found out what music she liked. I know it was snoopy and all, but I'm desperate. I hook it up and it starts playing some song by Michael Buble. I turned it up pretty loud and walked back to the kitchen.
The smell of bacon filled the house as the Buble sang his heart out. I silently said a prayer, this was my last hope. Then I heard slow and steady steps on the stairs.
Yes!
I turn around as I heard footsteps enter the kitchen. Then a small, soft hand tapped my shoulder. I turned to food on low before turning around. And there was Kim. Wrapped in a blank and with a slight case of bed head, she stared. She didn't say anything. She didn't have to. I smirked while she just stared.
''I like this song...'' she paused, ''but how did you know that?''
''Kim,'' I put on the best cocky smile I could, ''it's called the Jack Factor.''
She shifted her blanket and let her eye brow rise. Then just waved it off. Leaving me in the kitchen she walked in the living room and sat on the couch. She sat down just as Buble finished his song. Then another song started, it was just an old favorite to me, but as soon as it came on Kim lit up. She did something she hadn't done in what seemed like years.
She smiled.
Jackpot.
I ventured over as the guy started to sing the first verse.
In your eyes, I have seen all the feeling and the rain
''You know this song?'' I asked with a smile.
She looked up at me like it was obvious, ''uh yeah, I love the Lighthouse and the Whaler.''
''I listened to them a while back, but I don't really listen to music like that anymore.'' I reply.
She nodded and went back to listening. That's when another idea came to me. I grabbed Kim hand as the drums bumped and pulled her to her feet. She held on to her blanket with her other hand.
I pulled her closer to me, ''dance with me.''
Kim stared into my eyes. I could just see the pain and hurt in her eyes. I smiled and began to sway to the beat playfully. Then I let go of her hand and began to dance crazily to the song. She laughed at me and shook her head.
''You're crazy, Jack,'' she said still laughing.
I beckoned for her to join me, but she just shook her head. I made a face and started singing along. Finally, to get me to shut up, she laid her blanket on the couch and walked up to me.
''Look who's joinin' in the fun,'' I grabbed her hand and we swayed together.
That's when she let go. Kim started dancing crazier than me. She was having so much fun, she didn't notice the song change. John Mayer blasted through the house. I laughed, I knew this song. Kim welcomed the change. She grabbed my hand and twirled me then brought me close. I breathe on her and her on me. I swore she was leaning in, but the next thing I knew I was pushed on the couch.
I chuckled as she laughed at my clumsiness. Kim flopped beside me, laughing uncontrollably.
''You're the best dancer I've seen by far,'' I joked.
''Thank you, you know no one has ever-'' she stopped herself and looked at me, ''you were joking?''
I chuckled and nodded. Kim punched me in the arm playfully. Then it grew silent, excluding the ending of John's song. We sat in comfortable silence until the next song started. I frowned when the female vocalist came in. It was horrible. I hated the song and it was only about thirty seconds in. It was sappy and superficial.
I stood up and walked over to change it. Kim objected, but I did it anyway. I was about complain about it and all when the remembered the food. I rushed into the kitchen and checked the bacon that was still good. The toast and omelets were already done. I set out three plates and shoveled the smallest one on a plate.
Then out of no where two small arms wrap themselves around my stomach. Not too tight and not too loose. On of the hands gripped the other to keep its hold. I smiled as I put the remaining of the food on the plates. Then I felt a something gently lay against my back. I finish then, slowly and carefully, I move to the stairs.
''Mia, you ready to eat?'' I yelled up.
I waited a second for her to appear and she did. Maria got down the stairs in no time. She practically ignored me and walked to the dining room. I pat Kim's arm and sigh in frustration. Kim tightened her grip like she's letting me know that she's here. It help me, but I really needed help on how to deal with her and all that. I couldn't ask her though. That would kill her.
I migrate towards the kitchen to get's Maria's plate, Kim in tow.
''Jack! JJJJJJJAAAAACCCKKKK! Where's my food!'' she whined.
I took a deep breath and grabbed her plate. I walked to the table and put it in front of her along with a fork. She didn't thank me or say anything for that matter. I walked back to the kitchen, only for Kim to lose intrest in me and unwrap her arms. She slowly trudged to the living room, wrapping herself in herself blanket. It was like a cocoon or a wall. Right when I knock one down she builds another.
''I guess you're not gonna eat, huh?'' I ask in frustration.
Kim didn't answer. I was so pissed at that moment I didn't notice Maria walking into the kitchen. She walked right past me and threw away her untouched food and set the plate on the counter. Then she did something that surprised me. She ventured into the living room and climbed on the couch beside Kim. Kim didn't move.
I watched as Maria stared at her, intently.
This scared me.
Right now, Kim was Maria's mother figure and Kim has been in the dumps since she got here. I have to do something.
''Kim, get up. Come on.''
Kim looks up at me. Its kind of crazy how fast she fell back into her earlier slump. She gives me her hand reluctantly.
''What happened? You were acting like the old Kim just minutes ago.''
She looked at me funny, ''so I have to be the old Kim for you to like me?''
realization hit me like a ton of bricks.
''No that's not-''
''Well, guess what? I don't ever wanna be that girl. She's weak and dumb and-''
''Then don't be her!'' I cut in.
She looked at me confused.
''Don't be her then, be whoever you wanna be. I'm sorry for that, I was just mad. Alright?''
''Alright, Brewer.'' she replied with a small smile.
''Uh, when did we start calling each other by our last names?''
She was about to answer when a song started busting through the speakers. Kim recognized it because she smiled slyly. I however didn't recognize it. I like it right away though. I was so sexy and smooth. I walked over and turned it up slightly. The walked over to Kim. I held my out for her to take and, to my surprise, she took it without hesitation.
''So in why Kim here listen to something like this?'' I asked.
''Honestly, I forgot that was up there.''
The female vocalist came in and blew me away. Kim could see it in my face and giggled. As she got closer to the chorus the atmosphere changed. Before I knew it I was behind Kim and enjoying myself a little too much. Her hands in my hair and mine holding her close. Our bodies molding together.
Lord, I'm in trouble.
