Amy knew that look. It was the look the Doctor had when everything went wrong, when there was nothing more that he could do. "Doctor?" she whispered. "What's happening?"
The Doctor was shaking his head and moaning "no", over and over. He dropped back to his knees next to Amy, who was still lying down. At some point, River had come out of the TARDIS, and she was now kneeling with the others. She wanted to hold her parents' hands, but she couldn't – she would've just passed straight through. "Doctor!" Rory yelled. Everybody jumped and turned to look at him. "What's happening to us?"
The Doctor took a deep breath. "I didn't know that you were in this world. I shouldn't have come here. I ripped a hole in time and space. You were supposed to have died by the Angel already, and technically, you're not alive. I'm surprised that you—"
"Doctor, shut up," River Song snarled. She turned back to her parents. "Mum, dad, I love you so much. Please just remember that, whatever comes after now." A tear slipped down her cheek.
"Melody," Amy started. "We're dying, aren't we." She said it like a statement, like she already knew, not a question. River Song nodded, unable to speak. "I love you, River," Amy continued. "So do I," Rory added, "I love you so much."
Finally, Amy thought. A chance for her father to say goodbye. For both of us to say a proper goodbye.
With that final thought, her image flicked rapidly, and then disappeared. A few seconds later, Rory's did the same, and as it did, the Doctor could've sworn he heard Amy and Rory's voices saying, Thank you, Doctor. He didn't have an emotional breakdown like he did in New York. Instead, he just leaned forward, his face in his hands, the backs of his hands touching the sand. He took a few deep breaths and allowed himself one heartbroken sob before he sat back up. He felt a hand on his shoulder, but he didn't turn around. He already knew it was River.
"Doctor," she said quietly, kindly. "Rose…" Trailing off, she left the Doctor to come to his own conclusions. Very slowly, he turned around to face her. Rose's blond hair had grown longer. In fact, it was in the exact same style it had been in when they visited WWII-era London, where they had encountered the gas-mask child during The Doctor's ninth regeneration. Her face was gaunter than he remembered, her weight loss prominent in every bit of her body. And then he spotted the human Doctor behind her.
The Time Lord walked over to Rose and pulled her into a hug. When he pulled away, the four walked into the TARDIS to sit down and talk for a while.
"It's so different," Rose gasped as she walked inside the control room of the TARDIS.
"It regenerated when I did," he explained, flashing her a weak smile. "Tea?"
Within about five minutes, everyone was seated in the soft chairs under the console, where the Doctor sometimes worked on the wiring and whatnot. Everyone but Tentwo, the human Doctor, was looking at him, anxious for an explanation of what had just happened before their eyes. Tentwo already knew, but he thought it would be better to let this Doctor tell. The Doctor breathed in and exhaled heavily, closing his eyes for a moment before speaking.
"They shouldn't have been able to come here," he began. "The Weeping Angel… it wasn't strong enough to send them back in time, so it just sent them to this universe. How? I don't know. And they shouldn't have lasted this long. They weren't even really alive here. They were more just… memories. Waiting to be triggered by something from their past. In this case, it was me." He paused, composed himself. "I don't fully understand how all of this happened, but…"
The Doctor looked up at his friends. "I don't really know what to do, now," he said weakly. He looked up, at Rose. Her hands were twined with Tentwo's hands. They were comforting each other, or at least trying to. The Doctor frowned a little bit. "Rose," he said. The girl looked directly at him, tears streaking her cheeks and more in her eyes.
"Bad wolf," he said, and smiled faintly. She tried to laugh, but wasn't very successful.
"Oh, Doctor," she sniffed, wiping her eyes. "Listen. I've got a home here, in a way. But I miss it so much. Travelling. Living that lifestyle. But I've also got him… well, you know. But… do you think I could have one last trip?"
The Doctor smiled sadly. "Of course! Let's go now. Where do you want to go?"
Rose squeezed Tentwo's hand, let go, and took the Doctor's hand in her own. Together, they walked forward to the two gray gravestones, carved with the names "Rory Williams" and "Amelia Williams", followed by dates underneath. The Doctor and Rose kneeled down on their knees and placed a beautiful bouquet of flowers on each headstone. They sat there for quite a while, just looking at the graves. Finally, the Doctor gave Rose's hand a tiny squeeze, and they got up. The three of them walked back into the TARDIS. After a final look at the graves, the Doctor shut the door and they flew off into time and space.
