Chapter 13: The break day

Devon POV

Vincient and I were spending the day doing random things. We went to a movie- an old horror movie called Mama- rock-climbing, and even to my ex-girlfriend's weapon shop.

Nothing made us forget about the Stiffs.

Every time, one of us remembered and asked the other; so it kind of dulled the effectiveness of trying to forget.

So when one of Sin's friends, Zeus asks if we want a drink, we confer quickly.

"5 pieces of cake says we'll forget them," I say.

"Twenty says we won't. Dude, the universe is against us, haven't you noticed?" Sin remarks.

"We can try," I argue.

"Ah, what the hell," Sin says.

"I'm going to regret this," I say.

"Most definitely!" he calls, already moving away. "I will, too!"

"Okay, then," I mumble to myself. Then to Zeus, "What the hell." I catch the beer Zeus throws and take a swig.

Julia POV ( Sorry, I don't normally do this)

Eve and I are hanging out with Theran and Sam and Sienna, though Eve looks like she is about to punch the latter. She's being very pansycakeish. I learned of that word from Sin. He says someone related to someone he knew brought it back from disuse. It means un-Dauntless and can be used as a noun, adjective, adverb, and pretty much everything else.

We have a day off today before, tomorrow, we start stage two, so we decided to go to a few stores. I bought a pair of spikey earrings and a choker. Eve bought a chalk-dying kit, Sienna a very… Amity… dress in pink and black, and Sam and Theran each bought knives at a weapons shop in the coner of the Pit.

We walk by the Chasm, passing a familiar sight: A bunch of drunken guys standing around the edge. But this time- not at all familiar, in fact, I'd never seen it before- I saw Ten and Sin with them.

"Hey! Eve! Julia! Ten, you owe me twenty pieces of cake!" he says in the same cheery tone that he used to greet us. "So, what's up?" he asks, his words directed at Eve.

"You're drunk!" she says, accusingly.

"What gave you that impression, the beer bottle in my hand, or the fact that I can't walk straight?" Sin asks.

"The fact that you reek of alcohol!" Eve says.

"Thank you, dearie, I try," Sin says sarcastically.

"What the hell are you doing here?" I ask Ten, who has wandered over sort of vaguely to join our conversation.

"We were trying to forget something," he slurs.

"What were you trying to forget?" I ask cautiously.

"I forget," he says.

"It must be working then," I remark, disgustedly.

He looks directly at me for the first time since our "conversation" started. "Oh, wait. I remember, now. Dammit!" he curses, then takes another long drink from the bottle in his hand.

"How many beers did you have?!" Eve asks.

"I lost count after six," Ten says.

"Or was it seven?" Sin says.

"Maybe ten?"

"We forget," Sin says, running a hand through his hair.

"I like what you did to your hair, Jules," Ten says, lifting his hand to my dip-dyed ends.

"Don't call me that!" I burst out angrily. "I don't care if you're drunk, you have to have express permission to call me that! Don't call me that."

Ten raises his hands in mock surrender. Then, Eve grabs the bottle in Sin's hand, putting it behind her back.

"No more! No more!" Eve says as Sin follows her, reaching around her to grab the bottle. She backs up against the wall, Sin still grabbing for his beer. My attention is diverted by a man almost falling into the Chasm.

"Hey, do me a favor. Take Sin and get AWAY from the Chasm. I don't want you to die."

"Sure," Ten turns as Eve runs over, grabs my arm, pulling me.

"We're leaving!"

"Why?" I ask.

"Because of what Sin did to me!"

"What did he do to you?!" I ask, concerned and protective.

"Not-don't think that way you filthy minded Stiff!"

We throw insults at each other, and push each other on the way. I realize that if my life continues this way, if I am able to be who I am, I will be the happiest girl alive.
