Chapter 27:

For the second time in a week, Emma was roused early by her phone. The first time it had been to run tests and interrogate the Winter Solider at S.H.E.I.L.D.'s New York headquarters. Now there was no telling what it could be for. Turning over in bed, she reached for her cell phone and looked at the text message that had just come through.

'Brooklyn– 20 minutes.'

She inwardly groaned as she deleted the message and rolled over onto her back in bed. That was when Clint's arms pulled her close to his body once again. "Fury?" he mumbled into her hair, in a half-asleep, half-awake voice.

"Yeah."

"Want me to go with you?" he asked.

"It's alright. Hopefully this won't take long," she said turning her head so that she could kiss his lips before getting up.

Clint rolled over in bed once again and curled up with a pillow. Emma ruffled his hair slightly as she headed into the bathroom to change. As much as she wanted her husband to accompany her to meet with Fury, she knew that this was a top-secret meeting because of the location. There were very few times that Fury wanted to meet in other places than either S.H.E.I.L.D.'s New York headquarters or in Washington, D.C. – but she knew that when he requested a meeting elsewhere then something was up.

Hopefully it was nothing at all.

But that was unlikely.

"Excuse me?" Emma asked in confusion as she looked at the S.H.E.I.L.D. director.

"You heard exactly right, Agent Carter. Wipe all of them."

"Including you?"

"Including me," he said as he handed her a flash drive. "When the time is right, return this to me."

"What is this?"

"Evidence. Now do you think that you can convince him to help?"

"I'm sure that he already knows."

"That is why I believe he is much better in his new profession then his old. Besides you were one of his last patients. And that is the only reason we know anything about him now. Now remember, only you should know that truth." Fury said exiting her Brooklyn bookstore and into a dark alley. He quickly disappeared into the darkness. Emma waited a few minutes before leaving out a different way.

Next stop – 177A Bleecker Street.

Hopefully the good doctor wouldn't mind a visitor at this hour of the morning.

"Let me see if I have this correct – you want me to alter the memories of those involved – all but you. Correct?"

Emma nodded as she accepted of cup of warm tea from Wong before turning her attention back to Dr. Stephen Strange. "Just for the past two weeks," she said. "Keep the good things, but get rid of any traces of Winter Solider. Also somehow make sure that the Winter Solider escapes."

He raised an eyebrow to her last request – freeing a prisoner? There had to be some explanation to all of this. "Helping an assassin escape?"

"There is more to this. Something has happened to him over the last 70 years. The director seems to think that by letting him go, that we will be led to whoever is behind his training and funding. I do not agree with it – but I'm not the one in charge."

"You do know that there is a risk involved in all of this," he warned.

She nodded. "If you are able to do so, I will make sure that you stay off of S.H.E.I.L.D.'s radar more than you already are," she countered as she took a sip of her tea.

"That is all I ask for."

Emma smiled as she and the doctor finished sipping their tea.

"Expect to see something as soon as the sun rises," he said helping Emma to her feet once their tea was finished.

"Thank you," she replied.

"How could I ever resist telling one of my favorite patients no?"

Emma smiled before turning towards Wong, who led her back to the front door.

As she walked towards the motorcycle that was parked in front of 177A Bleecker Street, she could not help but wonder if what she was doing was the right thing. Especially to Steve…

AN: I know – its been forever! Anyways, after seeing Captain America: Winter Soldier three times this weekend, I decided that I needed to work on this story! And so, I redid things a bit. I'm going to use bits and pieces from the recent Marvel movies to tie into this story as well as things to come. So the rewriting of memories was needed.

Feedback is always welcomed!
