Chapter 6: Out
When the two boys made their way downstairs, they were met with Mrs Knight and Katie, both with teary eyes, the keys in the older woman's hand as she turned and led the way out the door.
"Mama Knight?" Logan asked gently, hurrying forward to walk beside her "would you like me to drive?" Mrs Knight nodded shakily, handing over the keys.
"Thank you Logan," she told him softly "you're so brave," Logan tried not to let that churn up his insides as he got into the front seat of the car; he wasn't brave at all, in fact he was terrified! Kendall and James were like big brothers to him, if anything happened to either of them - Logan was scared to death, he was just better at hiding it.
Before long, they were all at the hospital, willing Logan wordlessly to approach the front desk, which he did, and spoke in a shaky voice.
"Um, we're hear to see James Diamond and Kendall Knight," he indicated the others around him "this is Kendall's mom and sister, and we're his and James' best friends," he indicated himself and Carlos.
"I'm afraid you can't see James right now, he's just being settled into his room, we had a bit of a traumatic time getting him out of the wreckage, but Kendall's room is right down the hall," she said after consulting her records. Logan felt Carlos tense up beside him, and he put a hand on his friends arm,
"It's OK, buddy, James'll be fine," he said gently as Mrs Knight thanked the receptionist.
"OK, she said Kendall's room is number 5, third on the left." Mrs Knight informed them, leading the way down the hallway. Logan took a deep breath before opening the door gently. He poked his head around the corner of the door, his nerves settling ever so slightly; Kendall wasn't as broken as Logan thought he would be, and aside from the stitches on his forehead and the lack of color in his face, he looked perfectly fine.
"Kendall?" the blonde looked up at his name, a weak smile crossing his face.
"Hey, guys," he said, his voice hoarse as his mother, sister and two friends gathered around his bedside.
"Are you OK sweetie?" Mrs Knight asked her son gently, putting a hand on Kendall's arm.
"I'm fine, mom," Kendall said, shifting slightly and wincing as he did so.
"What happened?" Logan asked as Mrs Knight pulled a teary Katie into her embrace. Kendall thought for a moment, as if he was struggling to remember. He winced as he thought, and the others watched him carefully.
"Um, well, James and I were driving home from the race, and, uh," he closed his eyes and rubbed at his forehead, his face scrunching up, as if he was fighting for the memory "and there were these drunks, and they nearly ran us off the road, and then it was all OK again, but-" he scrunched up his face again, wincing as the others watched him anxiously "but then they crashed into us, and the car got flung to the side, and James- James, he-" it was as if he had forgotten what happened after that, as if he didn't want to remember.
"What about James?" Carlos pressed, and all of a sudden Kendall was crying. He sobbed and sobbed, causing Carlos to leap back in fright "What did I do?" he asked Logan, who shook his head.
"James! No! James do-don't go! Please! James don't leave me! James, stay with me? Please!" Kendall cried, tears streaming down his face.
"Kendall?" Logan asked gently, placing a hand on his best friends arm.
"No!" Kendall screeched, thrashing away from Logan "Please! James, don't go!"
"I think it's best we leave him," Logan said shakily, leading the way to the hospital room door. He grabbed Katie and pulled her away at the last second before the door was flung open and a pair of nurses and a doctor entered, the two nurses sitting either side of Kendall and grasping both of his arms to stop him thrashing.
"We're going to have to give him something for his panic attack," the doctor said "I think one of our other doctors would like to chat to you about James' condition, Mrs Knight, as you're his legal guardian in Los Angeles," he indicated the door, and Mrs Knight led the boys and Katie into the hallway, where Carlos and Logan sat down with Katie in the plastic waiting room chairs, and Mrs Knight was met with a middle aged doctor, his greying hair flat on his head, a set of glasses on his nose, magnifying his kind blue eyes as he looked down at Mrs Knight.
"Mrs Knight, I'm Doctor Alan Andrews, I'm one of the specialists here. I'd like to talk to you about James, privately, if that's OK with you."
"A-alright," Mrs Knight said uncertainly, following the doctor around a corner, out of sight of the three anxious children who were watching her.
"I'm afraid I have some bad news about James," Dr Andrews said "when the car he was in hit the second one, his airbag was faulty, so it didn't go off as per usual-"
"Oh!" Mrs Knight put her hands over her mouth "It didn't kill him did it?"
"No, no," the doctor said, smiling and shaking his head as the woman relaxed. "It's just that he hit his head very hard on the dashboard of the car. Now, we've stopped the bleeding and stitched the wound, but he has lost a large amount of blood. The hit to his head has knocked him out cold, his vitals are fine, for now, but when he comes to he'll be weak."
"OK," Mrs Knight said, wringing her hands "do you know when he'll wake up?"
"I'm afraid not, it could be anywhere from a matter of hours to days." Dr Andrews said solemnly "I'll let you be with your family, and go and check on James,"
"Thank you," Mrs Knight nodded, sighing as she and the doctor parted ways, and she made her way back to the waiting area, where she found Carlos and Logan, their arms around Katie and the same blank looks on their faces.
"What did he say?" Logan asked anxiously, standing up and stepping to meet Mrs Knight, who put a hand on the genius' cheek affectionately before crossing the distance to stand in front of Katie and Carlos, who looked up at her expectantly.
"Listen, guys," she squatted down in front of the chairs as Logan took his seat beside Katie "I spoke to Dr Andrews, and he told me the details of the crash, apparently James' airbag was faulty, and didn't go off." Carlos felt his heart drop as Mrs Knight spoke; James' airbag didn't go off! The airbag that he and Kendall installed! It was his fault that James was hurt! "Apparently he hit his head on the dashboard of the car, Dr Andrews said he needed stitches, and he's lost a lot of blood-" Logan felt bile rise up in his throat at this; how many stitches did James need How much blood had he lost? A lethal amount? The genius pushed this thought from his mind as he listened intently to Mrs Knight, "he also said the crash knocked him out cold, and they're not sure how long he'll be out,"
"W-what?" Carlos felt sick to his stomach, "Out? What do you mean out?"
"He's comatose, buddy," Logan explained gently, and Carlos shook his head, disbelievingly. "Can we visit him?" the genius asked hesitantly.
"I don't know, sweetie," Mrs Knight shook her head "we'll find out, OK?"
A/N: That's actually a fair bit longer than I expected :) anyway, reviews would be lovely guys, what did you think of Kendall's little panic attack? And what do you think is wrong with James? Until next time, guys!
