Chapter 14: Knowing

The boys spent the rest of the short journey to Rocque Records explaining to James what he was in for.

"So I told Kelly about what happened when I rang for the car-" Logan began.

"Kelly's our manager's assistant, she's really nice!" Carlos supplied.

"Oh, right!" Logan stopped himself "Sorry, bud, I forgot that part,"

"It's ok," James smiled "so Kelly's our manager's assistant, and she got us the car?" he asked, and Logan nodded.

"Yep, so she should know about what happened, and she should've told our manager, Gustavo about it-"

"Our what-who?" James asked.

"Gustavo's our manager," Carlos put in "he's got some anger management issues, but he's cool, deep down inside,"

"Deep, deep down!" Logan joked "He does care about us," he said, turning to the pretty boy "he just doesn't show it very often," James nodded wordlessly as Carlos chimed in,

"He calls us dogs!"

"Okay?" James said slowly as the car parked an the three boys got out "So, Kelly's Gustavo's assistant, she's really nice, but Gustavo's a little rough around the edges,"

"Who you calling rough around the edges?" a voice demanded, and James turned around to be standing face to face with Gustavo Rocque.

"Uh, I-uh, the guys told me you uh, you were kinda into the whole tough love thing- which is cool!" James stammered awkwardly, unable to take his gaze from the beady eyes that were glaring at him from behind yellow sunglasses.

"Gustavo!" Logan said smoothly, stepping in front of James, who looked white as a ghost "I assume Kelly hasn't told you about what happened the other day," he took the man's arm and led him away into the studio, leaving Carlos alone with James.

"How does he not freak you out?" he asked the Latino, who shrugged.

"Eh, you get used to it," he replied casually "come on, I'll show you where we sing!" he grabbed James' wrist and yanked him forward into the recording area, where the pretty boy stood in the centre of the room gazing, wide eyed, all around him. He reminded Carlos of a kid in a candy shop.

"Whoa!" James breathed, awestruck "So, we actually sing in here?"

"Yeah!" Carlos said excitedly "We've made 3 albums in this room! You wanna hear?"

"Yeah!" James said as Carlos pulled a disc out and stuck it unceremoniously in the CD player. Soon, the room was filled with the low, raw tones of a male voice,

"That's Kendall," Carlos said as the music filled James' ears and he closed his eyes,

'... we're playin' air guitar, alright, we're being who we are, even if they hate that,' the vocalist changed then; slightly higher in pitch, sliding over the melody,

'want you to shout-'

"That's you!" Carlos grinned.

'all our favourite songs so loud-' Carlos turned the track off just as James opened his mouth,

"We'll be singing along, even if they hate that!" Carlos stared at him, open mouthed, for a second before jumping in on the song, his grin wider than ever

"Turn up the radio, so what if we lose control, get a little bit rock and roll!"

"So throw your hands in the air..." Carlos left James singing as he ran out of the booth,

"Logan! Gustavo, Kelly! LOGAN!"

"What?" the genius came to a halt in front of Carlos, Gustavo and Kelly close behind him "What is it, Carlos?"

"It's James!-" Carlos began.

"What about him? Is he OK?"

"He's singing!" the Latino told his friend excitedly.

"What-?" Logan spluttered.

"Come look!" Carlos grabbed Logan's wrist and dragged him to the recording room where, sure enough, James was happily singing the chorus of Like Nobody's Around a Capella,

"... it doesn't really matter if its wrong or right, do the way you do it, do it like nobody's around, we can do it like nobody's around!" James was gesturing to Logan now, as if he knew whose part was next, but that couldn't be true, right? Nevertheless, Logan joined in, for James' sake,

"Don't hesitate, be as dumb as you like, we may, miss the time of our lives so stay, you're dancing under the lights, even if they hate that,"

"Carlos!" James called excitedly, and the Latino grinned at him before singing.

"Turn up the radio, so what if we lose control, get a little bit rock and ro- oh oh, whoa, oh!"

"So throw your hands in the air-" Logan marveled at the fact that James had begun to sing the chorus all by himself, without missing a single beat to think about it.

"How much of the song did you play for him?" Logan asked Carlos in a low voice as James launched into the bridge.

"Not even a full verse!" Carlos replied, just as shocked "He finished the first verse after I paused the song!"

"I hope those memories can make you feel oh- all right!" Logan gave Carlos an astonished look before singing the final pre-chorus,

"Turn up the radio, so what if we lose control, get a little bit rock and ro-oh, oh, oh, o-o-oll,"

James counted out the rests just as they did in rehearsals, much to the boys' astonishment, before launching into the final chorus and finishing the song, a huge grin plastered on his face.

"Wow James!" Kelly was the first to regain her senses "You remembered that whole song!"

"I did, didn't I?" James appeared to be just as shocked as the others were "And I remember we had old microphones for the music video, and colorful pants, and we were dressed in white!"

"Yeah!" Logan said excitedly "Yeah, we did!"

"Dude, this is awesome!" Carlos burst out "Do you remember any more songs?"

"What about Better With U?" Logan suggested. James stared blankly ahead of him for a moment, before turning to Logan.

"How does it start?" he asked.

"Your verse!" Carlos supplied "Been down the longest road..." he sung, hoping the other boy would join in. James only stared blankly at him, however, and Carlos was unable to hold back the little sigh that escaped his lips, but the disappointment on Carlos' face was nothing to compare with James' dejected expression.

"It's OK, bud," Logan put a gentle hand on his shoulder "we wouldn't expect you to remember everything,"

"But I do!" James interrupted frustratedly "I just wanna not - not know, you know? Ahh!"

"Look James," Gustavo said surprisingly gently, but not without the hint of awkwardness that always happened when Gustavo Rocque got all deep and meaningful "I uh, I know it's frustrating right now, but you can't blame yourself for this, blame those assholes who made you crash!"

"What Gustavo is trying to say," Kelly cut in smoothly "is that this is really no one's fault, and all you can do to fix it is exactly what you're doing right now; being around people and places you know. Your memory will come back, James, it's just gonna take a little time,"

"I know!" James said, a little too abruptly..

"Come on, bud," Logan said, moving his hand down to take James' wrist "your mom and Mama Knight'll be wondering where we are,"

The boys had barely made it into the Palm Woods' lobby when James spotted a raven haired girl with a guitar and notepad by the vending machine; he looked her once over and said something that Carlos had thought he'd never hear his best bud say again,

"She will be mine!"
