When they got back to her room, Peter was still detailing their runaway plan. Wendy smiled and snuggled into him. It was a nice change of pace for him to be the one talking animatedly while she listened.
" We should go tomorrow," Peter suggested suddenly.
"Why tomorrow?" Wendy asked. She still wasn't sure they would be able to pull this off.
"What better time than now? Besides, our biggest issue was transportation and I figured something out."
"And what is that?" she asked looking up at him.
He smirked smugly. "You'll see. Meet me outside the forest tomorrow morning," he said getting up.
"You're not staying?" Wendy asked with a confused frown.
"Not tonight, Darling. There's much to take care of and not much time," Peter told her. She wished he would stay longer, but the determined look in his eyes told her there was no talking him out of this.
"Okay. I'll see you tomorrow then," she said after a while.
"Dress warm. And don't forget anything," he instructed, before stopping to give her a long kiss.
"Alright. I love you," she said smiling up at him.
"I know. Night Darling," he said opening the window.
Wendy stood up and followed him to the window. "How can you be so sure this is going to work?" she asked watching him climb down.
"It's simple. Ever since my parents left, I have regarded love as weakness. Something that could only cause pain and trouble. But for you.. It's strength," Peter explained smiling at her.
"You think love is powerful enough to get us through this?" Wendy asked, slightly taken aback.
"I know it is," Peter announced in his usual smug tone.
"True love is felt on both sides you know," Wendy pointed out.
"I know. I just can't.. Not yet," he admitted uneasily.
Wendy unhooked her watch and handed it to him.
"What's this for?" he asked.
"To give you some time," she told him sheepishly.
He grinned and kissed her. "Don't be late!" he called climbing down.
"I won't!" she promised watching him go.
The next morning, Wendy awoke as early as she could bring herself to and went into her brothers' room. She looked around remembering when they used to play there together. Sometimes she'd tell stories and they'd act them out. Other times they'd pretend they were pirates or that they were explorers escaping an active volcano. Their father used to storm in and demand to know why they were running around long after they should've been asleep. Their mother would have to calm him down and make them promise they would go straight to bed. She missed that.
"I'm going to miss you two more than anything. Be good okay? I love you," she whispered kissing each of them on the forehead. She exited before she had the chance to tear up and walked into her parents' room. She didn't trust herself to speak, so she just squeezed both of their hands and left a note on the nightstand.
'You're good parents," was all it read.
When she arrived at the edge of the woods, Wendy was shocked to see Peter leaning against a motorcycle.
"Oh my God," she breathed not sure what else to say.
"You like?" he asked beaming with pride.
"We're going to get all the way to New York on that?" Wendy asked incredulously.
"Yes," he said walking over to her. She would've protested, but he'd already walked over and wrapped his arms around her. There was no way she was going to be able to think straight with him that close.
"This is completely unfair," she said looking up at him. He just grinned and kissed her.
"Let's just go before someone sees us," Wendy said pulling away.
"As you wish," Peter said handing her a helmet. She climbed on behind him and the two raced out of town without even a glimpse back.
It took hours to finally get there and Wendy slept most of the journey.
"Rise and shine, Darling. We're here," Peter told her gently. She opened her eyes and looked around. They were in the city, alright. Tall buildings surrounded them and people walked by in a rush to get one place or another. Still, there was something about the chaos of it all, and energy in the air, that was absolutely breath taking.
"Oh, Peter. It's beautiful," Wendy breathed looking up.
"Wait til you see where we're staying," he answered pulling up in front of a building and turning the bike off.
"You got us a place to stay already?" she asked as he helped her down.
"I did," he said proudly.
"How?" she asked curiously.
"I have my ways. Let's go in."
"Okay."
They walked inside and took the elevator up to their apartment. "You're amazing you know that?" Wendy asked when it stopped on their floor.
"I'd like to think so," Peter answered leading her to the door and unlocking it.
Wendy rolled her eyes and stepped apartment was lovely. It was small, but not cramped. There was a living room with a bunch of large windows and a kitchen. There was also a hallway with three doors. She dropped her bags in awe. "I love it," she announced throwing herself into Peter's arms.
"I'm glad," he said smiling down at her.
"I can't believe you did all this," she said pulling away and looking around. There was an island with four stools around it in the kitchen and a couch, TV, and end table in the living room.
"Well I've kind of been working on it for a while now," he told her sitting down.
"What do you mean?" she asked sitting down next to him.
"I've been planning on leaving town for a long time. I would've left ages ago, but you... I couldn't stand the thought of being anywhere where I couldn't just walk over and see you. So I made sure everything was ready and then asked you to come with me. And by some miracle you said yes," he explained looking over at her.
Wendy smiled. "Really?"
"Really," Peter replied smiling back.
"Did you finish the bedroom too?" she asked.
"Yeah, why?"
She kissed him deeply and stood up. "Let's go break it in," she said walking towards it. He stopped her in the hallway, pressing her against the wall and kissing her.
"I love you so much," she sighed as he began trailing kisses from her neck to her collarbone. He smiled moving her hair out of her face.
"You wanted to see the bedroom?" She nodded and opened the door, the two of them falling inside.
Wendy laughed as Peter picked her up bridal style and placed her gently on the bed.
"I'm glad you came with me," he told her meaningfully.
"Me too," she said smiling up at him, "Now get over here."
He grinned. "Don't have to tell me twice."
She grinned back and pulled him on top of her. "Welcome to the new Neverland," she said between kisses.
"There's no place else I'd rather be."
