Wendy woke up hours later to a wonderful smell drifting from the kitchen. She pulled Peter's discarded t-shirt over her head and went to go see what it was.
"Hey. You're up," he said when she walked in.
"I am," she said climbing on to one of the stools.
"I'm making grilled cheese. Want one?" he asked as he continued to bustle around the kitchen.
"Mm, please. I'm starving."
He stopped to give her a smirk and a kiss. "I bet."
Wendy just rolled her eyes and watched him get back to cooking. "So... Now what?"
"I haven't thought that far yet," Peter answered sliding the grilled cheese on a plate and placing it in front of her.
"Well we'll have to figure out a way to live and-" Wendy started to say before Peter kissed her cutting her off.
"You don't have to think or worry about anything," he told her.
"I-I don't?" she asked confused.
"No. That's the whole point of us coming here isn't it? To not worry about school, or parents. To just be."
Wendy smiled weakly. She knew he meant well, but it was in her nature to worry. Who would she be without that?
"I know you're used to taking care of people and I know it's hard for you not to worry, but just let someone else do that for a change," Peter said sitting down across from her.
"Okay. Okay I'll try," Wendy promised.
He grinned. "Good. Now get dressed I want to show you something."
"Show me what?" she asked confused.
"You'll see." She knew by the mysterious glint in his eyes that it was best just to go along.
"Oh alright. I'll be right back," she said getting up. She changed back into her clothes and went back in to the living room.
"Ready?" Peter asked holding up her coat.
"I guess," Wendy answered as he helped her shrug it on.
"It'll be fun, trust me. Now let's go."
The two walked out into the cold winter air. Snow was still falling lightly and the city was as alive as ever. Wendy could've stood there all day just absorbing it, but Peter had other plans.
"Come on, Darling. You can stare at everything from inside," he said pulling her along.
"Where are we going anyway?" she asked as they weaved their way through crowds of people.
He just shrugged and kept walking. Wendy sighed and tried to keep up with him.
"We're here," Peter announced sounding self satisfied.
"Ice skating in Central Park! I've always wanted to do that," Wendy sighed wistfully.
"What are we waiting for then?"
The two paid and rented skates before heading into the rink. Wendy put one foot out and slid immediately. Peter just laughed and helped her up.
"This looked a lot easier on TV," she muttered tersely.
"Here, take my hands," he offered. She sighed and placed her hands in his. He began to skate backwards, helping her along. She had to admit it was easier once she had him to hold on to.
"Better?" Peter asked smugly.
"Much. This is lovely," Wendy answered looking around. Couples and families were skating around looking as happy and carefree as ever. Beautiful buildings loomed over them as well as snow covered trees. It was like something directly out of a movie. They skated for what must've have been hours. She wanted desperately to stay, but it was getting colder and darker by the minute.
"Hot cocoa?" Peter asked reading her mind.
"Oh God, yes. Let's go," Wendy said letting go of his hands. She managed to skate to the exit without falling on her face. Peter applauded and skated out after her. They returned their skates, bought hot cocoa to go, and went home.
"I think this is the happiest I've ever been in my life," Wendy declared. They were snuggled up on the couch drinking hot cocoa and watching a movie.
"Really?" Peter asked looking down at her.
"Yupp. This whole day has been absolutely perfect. Just the two of us doing normal couple things without worrying about school or my parents or my brothers. It's amazing," she told him smiling broadly. He smiled back and kissed her.
"I'm glad. That means I've reached my goal."
"Everything's a game to you huh?" Wendy asked jokingly.
"Almost everything. Definitely not your happiness."
"Aw, I love you too," she said kissing him.
There was a knock at the door shattering the moment.
"Who could that be?" Wendy wondered standing up.
"I'll go look. Stay here," Peter instructed. She just gave him a look and followed him to the door. They opened it to see Felix, his permanent scowl plastered on his face.
"Pan. Bird," he said in greeting.
"What are you doing here?" Wendy asked confused.
"I'm here with a warning. The entire town's been turned upside down in search for the two of you," Felix explained talking directly to Peter.
"Nice to see you too," Wendy muttered walking back over to the couch.
"I'm sorry, did I interrupt something?" Felix asked, sounding completely unapologetic.
Yes, Wendy thought, but kept her mouth shut.
"Of course not. Come in," Peter said stepping aside. Wendy watched as the two of them sat down in the kitchen.
"Fill me in," he instructed.
Felix shrugged. "It was exactly what I told you would happen. Her parents organized this huge search party. I'm fairly sure they looked through half of Maine already."
"Are they close?" Peter asked.
"They're getting there. They're not going to rest until their little girl is 'home safe,'" Felix answered.
Wendy hated the condescending way Felix was talking about her parents. They had every right to be worried. She hadn't given them any reason not to. She suddenly felt terrible. She missed them already and it hadn't even been a day yet. She wished going back home didn't mean losing what she had there, but it did. If she went back, they'd practically have Peter burned at the stake.
"Alright over there, Darling?" he asked walking over to her.
"Yeah, fine. Just..."
"Worried?" he supplied for her. She nodded.
"I told you, you have nothing to worry about. Why don't you go get some rest and Felix and I will figure out what to do," he suggested.
"Okay. Don't be too long," she replied getting up.
"I won't be. Good night Darling."
"Night Peter. Love you," she said kissing him and walking into her room.
Wendy changed into her pajamas and sat down on the bed. A part of her wanted desperately to go home, but another part of her, the part that would be bound to Peter forever, wouldn't let her leave. She sighed and lay down, looking at the ceiling. As long as those two parts of her were at war, she'd never be truly at peace. The thought exhausted her, and she found herself falling into a deep, restless sleep.
