Selena
Selena stared up at the high-school girl that Setsuna had called Mana. The other girl stared right back at her. She had this hateful look on her face, almost as if she didn't like the look of her. Her eyes narrowed as she scowled, turning her gaze elsewhere. "Damn swordsman. Always leaving messes for me to clean up! Now what am I suppose do with this brat? Who is this girl anyway?!"
Selena frowned. 'I'm not a brat . . . I think . . . I haven't done anything wrong! . . . I hope.'
Mana's gaze flickered back over to her. "Don't give me that look. I called you a brat, because that's probably what you are."
Sighing, the dark-haired girl turned her gaze out the window as she fell down onto a red coach. It instantly softened, as if she were staring at something or someone she loved. Wow. A whole new emotion besides annoyed.
Pushing herself to her feet, she gently dropped her back-pack against the glass coffee table in front of the couch. The slight noise brought Mana's now-once-again hateful gaze down to her as she took a pencil and a sheet of paper out of the bag. "Let me guess." The girl sighed agitatedly. "You're going to color a pretty picture of you and your mom?"
Flinching slightly at the mention of her mother, she shook her head as she signed –
Can you understand what I'm signing?
Mana blinked, confusion flickering across her face for half a second before it was replaced once more with a scowl. Nope.
Sighing again, Selena sat on the floor, writing – My name's Selena, Mana-san.
She slid the paper over to the girl, who smiled faintly. It was probably at the 'Mana-san', but at least it was something other than a frown. "Well, at least you have some sense of manners. But why don't you just speak?" She asked. "Trying not to annoy me with that little voice of yours?"
I can't.
Mana chuckled, leaning forward. "Am I that scary? Then again, I was wondering why none of the kids knocked to my door last Halloween." The dark-haired girl smirked. "I suppose word that I shoot my trick-or-treaters got around. It was only paint, but still."
No, I mean I literally can't. I don't have a voice.
"No wonder Setsuna likes you." The girl laughed. "Who doesn't want a kid who makes almost no noise? Well, besides me."
Selena frowned. She didn't exactly find that funny. Her smile falling, Mana sighed. "Don't give me that look. I'm sorry, okay?"
Leaning back, the girl's gaze flickered back over to the window. Mana smiled faintly, her gaze softening once more. Propping her elbow on the arm of the couch, she leaned her head against her open hand.
Curious, Selena quietly walked over to the girl, tugging on her pants leg gently. After a moment or two, the girl looked down. "What? It you're thirsty, go drink the chemicals in pretty-colored bottles under the sink. Who knows – they may actually taste nice. I suggest the Bleach or the 409."
Rolling her eyes, Selena pointed up at the window, tilting her head curiously. "Oh." Mana blushed slightly, glancing out the window quickly. "Zazie's practicing some new moves. Sir Scruffy, my pup, is tied to the tree, and I was just . . . . . . . making sure she wasn't about to accidently hit him with a pin or anything."
Even Selena could depict the lie easily. Glancing down at her, Mana scowled. "Now leave me alone! Go eat some rat poison or something; I'm busy! And, in case you decide to take my advice, that's also under the sink – right next to the Windex."
Puffing out her cheeks in frustration, the child shook her head. Taking a hold of her bag, she dragged it into the kitchen with her.
"The sink is on the right side of the kitchen, by the wall!" Mana called out. "If you're up for nap, the cloroform's in the back!"
Suppressing a giggle, Selena shook her head as she sat down on the floor. Digging through her bag again, she pulled out a juice box . . . as kiddish as that was. Poking the straw in, she did giggle when Mana sighed, mumbling. "And to think you might actually take my advice . . ."
'Juice, juice, juice! Yum~yum~yum!' Sipping her juice happily, she sighed at how it tasted more like grape than the oh-so-promising looking watermelon on the box. She hoped that it was a bottling issue and not the expiring date, but what could she do?
"Enjoying your drink there?" the other girl inquired, studying Selena. Shifting uncomfortably, she placed the box on the floor, giving a small nod. Mana continued to stare at her, studying. Staring. Staring. Staring.
She shifted slightly again, blushing slightly. She allowed her gaze to drop down to her lap, but she could still feel the weight of the girl's gaze . . .
Her blush gained a bit more color as she glanced back up at the high-school girl quickly. 'Please stop looking at me . . .'
No such luck.
Mana continued to stare at her to the point where Selena was squirming persistently where she sat, red as a tomato. And continuously after that . . .
"Mana." A voice sighed, yet it held little to no emotion. "Stop it."
The other girl's gaze flickered from her to the newcomer, shock clearly reflected. "Zazie?"
"Hi." Another girl came into view, sitting beside Mana. She was holding who Selena presumed was 'Sir Scruffy'. Studying her briefly, Zazie glanced at Mana, asking. "Who's this?"
"Selena. Setsuna dropped her off, thinking that I would be the best person to look after her for some random reason. Apparently Asuna overreacted last time and ran out on her, leaving her with Negi."
Zazie smiled slightly. "Oh."
The puppy tilted its head curiously, jumping out of the girl's arms and onto the floor. Bounding over to her, Sir Scruffy skidded into a sudden halt – causing him to tumble into her lap. He gave a short, excited bark, his caramel eyes blinking up at her cutely. She gave a soft squeal of joy, rubbing his stomach.
Mana grumbled something, but Zazie laughed. Selena didn't mind. She was too focused on how adorable Sir Scruffy was! With his floppy eyes and his soft fur and his cute, lovable face!
Setsuna
"Ms. Konoka!" Setsuna mumbled, her voice getting as close to a whine as she would allow it to.
"Just try it on, okay?" the other girl smirked, knowing full and well that Setsuna herself would never pick this outfit out herself. "And what happened to 'Kono-chan'?"
"It disappeared when you handed me these." Setsuna murmured, trying to dump them back into Konoka's arms. "I don't see why we had to go shopping in the first place."
"Because it's fun!" the heiress giggled. "Plus, I wanna get you something! You did, after all, get us those tickets home."
"But those were for Christmas. I got them out of my freewill. I don't want anything in return." The swordsman sighed. Puffing out her cheeks cutely, Setsuna had to suppress a laugh as Konoka pouted slightly.
"Well, that doesn't mean I can't get you something. I mean, all I gave you was an old photograph . . . and a kiss." She responded. Shaking her head, the swordsman smiled. "And I don't mind. Konoka, the two things I've always wanted most in this world is to protect you and to be with you. When I can't be near you, the closest things I have to you are photographs. And that one was defiantly a good memory."
Smiling, Konoka gave a soft laugh. "I suppose you're right."
Setting the clothes back onto the rack, the heiress looked back over to her. "But could you try at least one thing on?"
*** About half an hour later
Trying one thing on meant putting on about five at a time until Konoka was sure she had found the right outfit for Setsuna. Glancing into the bag, she sighed at the black, folded jeans and long-sleeved, collared plaid shirt. It was either this, or she go with the pink skirt. And she already had to deal with one during school. But, she supposed the outfit wasn't that bad. At least she got a pair of jeans.
Spring was finally showing, but it was still pretty cold. Maybe it was because it rain earlier. Green grass and murky mud mixed on the ground next to them and over the sidewalk, making Setsuna slightly want to carry Konoka the rest of the way home. But, she knew that the heiress would more than likely shake her head at her if she tried.
Then again, she didn't want Konoka to get dirty . . .
What the hell could it hurt to try?
Giving a small squeak as Setsuna swept her off her feet suddenly, Konoka looked taken aback. "Um, Setsuna . . . I do know how to walk."
"I know." She hummed in response. Blushing slightly, the heiress glanced down at the ground. "It's just mud . . ."
Smirking, the swordsman shrugged. "So?"
*** Hello~!
Unlocking her door, Setsuna pushed it open for Konoka. "You didn't have to carry me all the way to the dorms . . ." The girl trailed off, blushing even more so than she already was as she walked inside.
Setsuna finally understood why everyone liked to tease her so much. She now understood the joys of making someone blush.
"If you're thirsty, I'm got some tea in the kitchen." Setsuna called over to her, closing the door. "There's also some melon Ramune in the fridge, but it's mainly there for Selena's sake."
Thinking for a moment, she hesitantly added, "And, I suppose if you want some, I managed to sneak a bottle or two of Sake from Eva's house a bit before Christmas."
Konoka frowned at her, but otherwise said nothing about the alcohol. Interesting. To be honest, she half expected the heiress to lecture her. "I'm fine, actually." The girl responded, draping her coat on the back of a chair.
Tossing her own coat onto the bed, Setsuna shrugged as she sat on the floor. "Alright."
Sitting down next to her, Konoka smiled. "You never did tell me why Asuna was laughing."
Giving a small huff of laughter, the swordsman shook her head. "No particular reason."
The other girl's smile fell slightly, but she said nothing further about it.
Leaning up against her bed, she sighed. ". . . Do you know what I forgot to do?"
Konoka tilted her head curiously. ". . . Eat lunch?"
"No – well, yes." Setsuna shook her head. "I forgot to run by Mana's and pick up Selena."
Mana
Scowling slightly, she sighed. "I seriously don't see why she had to drop the brat off here. There are plenty of other people in this building who would willingly take care of her."
"Well, maybe it's because she trust you enough to." Zazie murmured.
"I don't see why." Mana grumbled. "I have about five thousand different weapons hidden in this dorm. She might find one and shoot herself or something."
Zazie sighed, shaking her head. "She seems to like Sir Scruffy well enough."
Mana nodded. Glancing over at Zazie as the girl went to get up, her eyes widened in surprised as the girl paused long enough to kiss her on the cheek quickly.
With that, the half-demon quickly hurried off into the kitchen. Blushing furiously, Mana couldn't help but notice a smirking Selena. She quickly turned her gaze away from the child, and out the window. "Don't you dare say a word, brat." She grumbled.
Sighing, she nearly jumped as someone knocked.
Setsuna
Setsuna rocked back and fro on her heels, waiting for Mana – or Zazie – to answer the door. It didn't take long.
The door snapped open a crack as Mana peered out cautiously. "Come to get your brat?" The girl snapped, narrowing her eyes – well, for what Setsuna could see, eye.
Frowning, she shook her head. "Brat? Surely she wasn't that bad."
"Mana!" Setsuna heard Zazie scold. Weird. The girl's tone usually didn't change. Hearing the girl grumble something, the door open long enough for Mana to push Selena out into the hallway before the door shut with a sharp snap.
Sighing, Setsuna smiled down at Selena. "So, glad to see she didn't murder you."
