Revenge is Best Served...At Night

A fortnight passed then a month and Alambiel did nothing to my armory. In fact, she seemed more focused on her duties than playing pranks. It was suspicious to say the least. I know my wife and I know that she does not randomly abandon her plans. I decided to keep watch for any sign that she was about to stage one of her coups. And yet another month passed without incident…perhaps she had let it go. Highly unlikely…coup or armory, no doubt.

I had spent the last two months enjoying how wary Oreius was of his armory. I was careful and didn't breathe a word of the survival run or my intention to serve up a side of revenge. I was very well-behaved, thank you very much. And it made the Kentauri more suspicious. Something I still find highly amusing.
Sitting through a long meeting about what Thalia and I would be expected to address at the Lone Islands, I mused that Oreius had finally relaxed his guard just enough for me to exact my revenge. Of course, the meeting lasted well into the evening since Thalia was going in Lucy's stead. She had broken her leg last week and still hadn't confessed to Peter how it happened or why Tarrin was the one who had carried her back…I was just wondering how long it would be before Tarrin confessed to Peter that he accidentally knocked Lucy out of a tree because he was practicing with a spear. Still haven't figured out how he managed it, other than a healthy dose of Murphy and his dratted Law. I really needed to sit them down and get a step-by-step run through on it.
It was late enough when the meeting finally ended that I wasn't the least surprised that our quarters were dark. Oreius had come to bed late last night and he had been up for a good three hours before I got up at fifth hour this morn. He had probably hoped to catch up on lost sleep tonight. Poor Kentauri. I paused by the bed and clambered on in order to reach him. I kissed his cheek. "Still awake?"
I don't think there were any real words in his grunted answer. I grinned and kissed him again. "Won't take long."
Scooting back off the bed, I took off my crown and carefully set it in my jewelry box. I glanced at the Kentauri then pressed my lips together to keep an evil laugh from escaping. I might have skipped into the bathroom in order to get ready for bed…and revenge. I checked my reflection in the mirror and decided against letting my hair out of its braid. Then I carried the candle into the bedchamber, making sure to set it on the end table nearest Oreius.
Circling the bed, I considered Oreius for a moment. I was pretty sure he wasn't completely asleep. Well, only one way to find out. I jumped on the bed. The Kentauri's only reaction was to grumble and shift so he could drape an arm around my waist and tug me down next to him. I propped myself up on my elbow then placed my other hand against his shoulder. Well, this was it. I shook his shoulder and leaned close. "Oreius, wake up. I want to show you something."
He opened his eyes, started, and reacted by grabbing my throat. I might have miscalculated. Then, like any sane person in danger of being accidentally strangled, I started laughing. His grip eased immediately and then he blinked. "Alambiel?"
"Yes." I could only imagine what he thought as he took in my chalk white face complete with a painted on red smile and black diamonds over my eyes. I giggled more and lightly patted his hand. "Are you going to let go? After all, it'd be a bit embarrassing if the General strangled his wife before even a full year of marriage. Don't you think?"
Oreius frowned as he let go. "Why?"
"Because, Kentauri, revenge is a dish best served at night." I laughed again then leaned in. "Should I apologize?"
"Profusely," was his dry response. I leaned in closer, meaning to kiss him, and Oreius paled. He caught my shoulders in a firm grasp and pushed me back. "No. Not while you look so…unnatural."
I dropped my head, laughing harder. "Aww, not even one kiss?"
"No." He pushed me back a little further and grimaced as he surveyed my makeup. "Nor will I share a bed with a…a Pennywise. That is too unnatural to be borne."
I was going to break a rib if I kept laughing this hard. Oreius scowled but he didn't protest as I climbed over him to get off the bed faster. I scrubbed the makeup off my face then called over my shoulder, "You know why, right?"
"Yes. But I had expected a coup or some disaster being visited upon my armory. Not you making yourself look like that Fell Pennywise."
It took a moment or five before I was able to do anything except laugh. Oreius' aversion to clowns, or Pennywise as he calls them, probably just doubled or even tripled. Walking back into the room, I grinned at him. "To be fair, I only promised I would never mention the name again. I never promised that I wouldn't make myself up to look like one. Pity I couldn't find anything to serve as needle-like teeth."
That earned me a dark look. Oreius snorted then extended his hand to me. "Make it pax?"
"Pax." I took his hand and giggled some more when he groaned in exasperation when I didn't kiss him. Instead, I clambered over him again, still laughing. "Look on the bright side, Oreius. This revenge doesn't involve your armory or messy paperwork trying to explain why your wife took over the Cair and decided not to give it back."
"Minx."
"You married me."
He finally chuckled. "Yes, and I shall never regret it, Alambiel."
"Good answer." I leaned in and kissed him. Then jerked back with a shriek of surprise as he tickled my side. "That's cheating!"
His laugh was the only answer as he continued tickling me. I laughed more as we indulged the unexpected play. Revenge was also best served with laughter. Oreius was still cheating.
