Fifteen minutes, and everything went wrong. Who would have thought 15 minutes could have changed the world?
900 seconds, 900000 milliseconds, 15 minutes that changed the course of history forever.
And all of it was my fault.
"Marjory, it's time." Called out a voice, getting the attention of the doctor.
Marjory Pallas of the former company known as Cadmus scribbled a few more words onto the paper before looking up. There were so few of them left… It was still hard to wrap her mind around it, even after all of this time. Just herself, a young Russian girl named Sansa, a toddler named Mae, another blind kid named Conner, and a skinny boy who called himself Jace, however Marjory doubted it was his real name.
The kid was brilliant in any case, no matter his story was. Secrets were no big thing ever since The Day,
The blonde Russian girl balanced the fussy raven haired toddler on her hip. "Mae, please…" The toddler laughed and giggled at Sansa, unaware of what was about to happen. She suddenly turned into a little bear cub, and then into her raven-haired self again. Mae had been entrusted to Sansa since her parents had died almost four years ago, though Mae was only two and a half. This had also been Jace's doing.
Jace, the skinny black-haired boy with pale skin and a taciturn attitude pushed the goggles off his forehead and around his neck. He rubbed his eyes, smearing grease in a thing black line on his cheek. He looked at Sansa and nodded.
"Marjory, are you-mmph, Mae!" the toddler had reached up and was touching Sansa's lips. Sansa chuckled. "Mae, Mae…" The doctor stood up from the metal desk, put the paper into the envelope and sealed it off. She handed it to Conner, who pulled his bow from off his back. Despite his lack of vision, his perceptive skills were more than enough to fire a few arrows and hit a target.
Sansa passed Mae to Marjory. She bent down to look the little girl in face. "Don't worry Mae. Everything will be alright." Mae had stopped smiling, like she was finally aware what was going on. "Sansa!" she protested, stating one of the only words she knew, but it sounded more like Sanst-da to everyone but Mae.
Sansa gave her a wistful smile before placing a gentle kiss on her forehead. She grabbed Conner's hand and pulled him to where the cube was waiting on its stand, perched and ready.
Jace walked up to both of them and handed Sansa a remote. His dark eyes bore into hers.
"You can never come back, you know that right?"
Sansa nodded. "I know."
Jace looked uncomfortable. "Marjory and I will be here. Hopefully if everything goes right, everything will be okay once you leave. It should all go back into its place."
Sansa smile wistfully at him. "Hopefully."
Jace bit his lower lip. "Um, once you've found the right place, press the red button and leave. You already have a paradox machine that will allow you to exist on the same plane as yourself, but you'll have to change your appearance, and um, don't touch your past self. It could set off a chain that could start this whole mess again, and, um,
Sansa smiled and nodded. "Okay. Thanks, Jace." She leant in and gave him a light kiss on the lips.
"That's in case I never see you again."
Jace looked at her, then moved in and kissed her back.
"That's in case you do."
Sansa smiled at him and waved to Mae. "You'll see your parents soon, Mae."
Conner gripped his bow. Sansa was the only who he trusted out of everyone. He was her closest friend since May-Rin… no, he didn't want to think about that kind of stuff. She had even tempted him with eyesight, but he never got the chance to reply.
But would have really had said yes? He guessed he would never find out.
."Okay, I love farewells, but we should really get going."
Sansa and Conner put their hands on the cube. Jace backed up and held another remote in his hand. Mae began to cry and fuss in Marjory's arms.
"Sansa! Sansa!" she began to all out bawl in a way that broke Sansa's heart.
Jace looked sorrowfully at Sansa. Marjory managed a weak smile. "Good luck you guys."
Jace powered up the machine and looked up at the duo regretfully. "Please. You guys are our only hope. You need to stop all of this before it started. You… you need to go." It was more to conceive him then anything.
He pressed the red button on his watch.
The cube flashed a bright white, and in an instant they were gone. Jace knew they had only three minutes left before the world would change forever.
Jace felt tears streak down his face. "Don't… don't go." He bit his lower lip as the tears began to spill out of eyes. He sniffed and clenched his fists. Now both raven-haired minors were crying. Mae loudly, and Jace silently. Majory put a hand on Jace's shoulder, holding onto Mae tightly. Her face was tight; she was holding back her tears.
Two minutes.
Marjory sighed and closed her eyes. She wasn't very religious, but had been raised Catholic.
"Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle." She muttered. Jace had begun to quiet down, as did Mae.
" Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil." She said softly, her voice echoing in the darkness of the night. She hoped this plan would work.
" May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;" She said again in her gentle tone. Jace muttered the last part with her.
The entire plan was all her fault; she was one who got all of those kids killed.
One minute.
"and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host –" the pair said in unison.
She regretted it every day.
30 seconds.
"by the Divine Power of God –"
She wanted to be the one who went, but everyone insisted they would need her mind to run the future.
10 seconds.
"-cast into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits,"
Was she making the right choice? She hoped so. She wrapped an arm around Jace in a comforting hug. Mae had stopped crying entirely, looking around as though something was about to happen.
And it was.
Five seconds.
who roam throughout the world-"
Four.
seeking the ruin of souls.
Three.
Marjory closed her eyes tightly. Jace grit his teeth.
Two.
This was it. The world you change, far better than it had because of Project Meta.
One.
"Amen." They chorused together. Mae whimpered.
Zero.
With that, their world went black.
And Sansa with Conner arrived in the year 2014, to save their universe.
