A/N: Yay for regular updating! Consider it my apology! Even though I should update the other two... But I will get to that soon! In the meantime please enjoy this one and the crossover I have just posted if you'd like :)
Disclaimer: I own nothing and if I did this series would clearly be more depressing than it already is because I'm not funny and only right about really depressing situations and I'm really JUST REALIZING THIS.
"Lieutenant?"
Riza slowly started opening her eyes. It took some time because she was laying down which meant the overhead lights were shining too bright against her eyes. The first thing she focused on was black hair. Then black eyes. Finally everything came into focus and she saw her commanding officer sitting in front of her. Immediately she assumed that she was dreaming because Roy was in the East and even if he wasn't why would he be in her apartment? She tilted her head to get a better look and the image her mind was creating and groaned. If this was a dream why did it hurt?
If this was a dream why did it hurt?
Riza forced her eyes to stay open and focus on the Colonel. "Roy?" She managed to ask. She felt a weight on her hand and realized Roy was holding onto her. "It's me. Just relax. Edward and Winry brought you to the hospital but you're okay." He said quietly. Riza looked at him confused. "Why? What happened..?" She asked. "Officially you were just dehydrated. And knowing you, you were probably stressed out which would in no way help." Roy looked at Riza very seriously. "But unofficially there are some things we need to talk about." Riza knew what that meant and she didn't want to talk about it but she didn't want to fall asleep either and her vision was starting to go out of focus again. She started trying to fight to stay awake but Roy noticed.
"Shh. Riza stop. It's okay." The use of her first name stopped her and she looked up at him. "You're on a lot of medication now. You're probably going to go in and out of consciousness a lot. Just relax. I'm right here." Riza slipped back into sleep not long after that.
Roy stayed in place at Riza's side after she fell asleep again. He was like that, undisturbed, until the door to the room opened and Edward and Havoc walked in.
"Did she wake up yet?" Havoc asked. "For a second." Roy answered. "She was confused at first. I had to talk fast. But she knows we know about all the injuries." Havoc and Ed sighed and Havoc passed Roy a coffee. "I still can't believe you just left the East like that." Ed said after several moments. "What can I say, I'm invested." Roy commented looking back his Lieutenant. Ed and Havoc exchanged confused glances. "Alright, well, we're gonna go report to the others. You gonna be okay Chief?" Havoc asked. Roy nodded mutely and didn't look up as his subordinates left the room.
"I still say we should have put sleeping tablets in his coffee." Havoc told the rest of the team out in the hall. Ed turned to him. "I thought we agreed on that?" He asked. "No we decided against..." Fuery trailed off as everyone looked at Ed. "Whoops." The young alchemist said. "Brilliant, Ed." Winry said rolling her eyes. "You drugged your commander."
"Too late now." Ed replied, clearly not sorry about it. He turned to Havoc. "What do think he meant by 'invested'?" Havoc shrugged. "Beats me. I mean we figured out that those two have known each other for years before the military but Hawkeye wouldn't say anything." Ed and Al looked at each other and that, an action that wasn't missed by the others.
"What is it?" Breda asked. "On the train ride back East the Colonel told us that Lieutenant Hawkeye's father is the one who taught him flame alchemy." Al told everyone. Roy's other teammates looked stunned. "So, they really have known each other since they were kids." Fuery said, quietly. "Since he was eleven." Ed stated. The group exchanged glances, unsure of what to do with that information.
"Guys." Everyone turned to look at Winry. "Shouldn't someone go buy us time with the Bitch General?" She asked. Ed smiled a little. "Nice word play. I'm on it. C'mon Al." He said before heading off.
"Shouldn't we do it?" Havoc called out after him. "No! Trust me! He'll ask where she is if you all show up!" Ed called back. "We can handle this!"
"Doubtful." Winry mumbled causing all the guys to laugh.
Roy looked around confused as to why it was so dark. He realized after a moment that he must have woken up in the middle of the night. He pulled his pillow over his face and groaned. After studying with Mr. Hawkeye for hours he really just wanted a full nights sleep. It's not like something crazy was happening that he needed to be up for. Groaning again, Roy slid the pillow off his face and sat up. He rubbed his eyes and was about to fall back over when he heard it. It sounded to Roy like a high pitched squealing noise. He froze in his position on the bed and glanced around the room. It took several moments but the sound happened again, longer this time. Roy determined it wasn't coming from his room and- acting solely on curiosity- he jumped out of bed and headed for his door.
Just as his hand wrapped around the door knob a shrill scream pierced through the darkness of his room and caused him to jump a foot in the air. It only scared him more when he realized it sounded like Riza's voice. Slowly, Roy opened the door and wandered into the hallway. He headed down the hall towards Riza's bedroom but before he could get very far he heard footsteps on the staircase and bolted back to his room. He laid very still under his blanket and tried to control his breathing. A moment later he heard the door open and he felt his heart skip a beat. The door remained open but no one entered the room. After what felt like an eternity the door closed again and Roy heard footsteps fading away.
Roy opened his eyes again but didn't move. He strained his ears to try and hear something else happening in the house but all was quiet. He tried to make his heart beat normally again but he was honestly scared. He knew the voice he'd heard had been Riza's and that the person coming up the stairs had been her father. Both facts had him worried and frightened. What happened to her? Was she okay? Why was her father checking on him?
After a few hours Roy succumbed to sleep again only to be woken up around noon that day by the same blonde girl he had fallen asleep thinking about. "Roy?" She asked, quietly, trying to wake him. Roy sat up slowly, running a hand through his dark hair. "Riza?" He replied, yawning. The two had agreed to call each other by first name as long as Mr. Hawkeye wasn't around. Although Roy usually called Riza by the nickname he gave her no matter how much Riza said she didn't like it.
"It's almost afternoon. My father asked me to wake you." She told him. At the mention of her father Roy's mind cleared and he looked up at the younger girl by his bed. "Right." He said absently. "Are you okay?" He asked. Riza seemed surprised by the question. "Um, I think so." She said, confused. "It's just- I woke up last night. And I thought I heard you screaming." Roy told her. Riza's eyes got wide when he said it but other than that her demeanor didn't change.
"I-I had a nightmare." Riza said looking at the floor. "Oh." Roy said. That would explain the screaming. And if her dad had heard from downstairs...maybe he thought one of them had been harmed and was just checking on them...
Okay so Roy didn't really believe that but Riza seemed to not even want to look at him now. "Do you want to talk about it?" He asked gently. Riza's gaze snapped back up to his. "I-I...what?" She asked, fumbling with her words slightly. "I just mean... If you ever need to talk... I'm here. Really." Roy said, looking right back at her. Riza stared at him, looking ready to burst and start telling him everything- whatever everything was- but controlled herself. "I'm going to go ahead and make some food. But...thank you." She said and managed a small smile at him before heading to the door.
"Wait!" Roy called and jumped to his feet. Or he tried. In actuality his legs ended up tangled in his bed sheet and he fell face first onto the floor. "Ow." He mumbled. Riza stood in the doorway and the room fell into total silence and then suddenly she started laughing uncontrollably. Roy looked up at her from his position on the floor. She was holding onto the door frame and had the other hand over her face. Roy couldn't help but smile as he watched her shake with laughter.
Riza slowly calmed down but kept her hand over her now red face as she looked down at Roy again. "I'm sorry..." She got out still grinning. "No, it's fine." Roy said. "That's the first time I've seen you laugh like that. It's nice." Riza finally stopped laughing and stared down at him. Roy realized he probably looked ridiculous but Riza looked really cute just then so he didn't really care. And it was because of him too.
Riza smiled a little at him. "Here." She said and bent over to help him untangle himself. Finally free, Roy got to his feet and grinned at her. "Thanks." He said. "So, mind if I help you make food?" He asked. Riza found herself smiling back at him. "Sure. Just stay out of my way." She told him before heading out of his room. If possible Roy grinned even wider and her.
When Roy woke up he was smiling at the memory from his dream. The smile faded when he remembered the real reason Riza had screamed that night in addition to where they were now.
"Roy?"
He looked up and realized his face had been laying on Riza's hospital bed. "Hawkeye?" He asked groggily. "Yeah. The guys drugged you." She said. Roy's head shot up. "What?" He demanded. "They put something in your coffee. You haven't been sleeping. That's very bad you know." Roy looked a little closer at his Lieutenant. "Are you okay?" He asked. "Me? Pfftt. I'm fine. I am good."
"How many drugs are you on?"
"All of them." Riza answered and giggled. Actually giggled. Roy didn't know how to handle a situation like this. Riza started to move a little but ended up falling forward so her face was really close to Roy's who jumped slightly at the action. "So, Roy." Riza said, using his first name for once. "Have I ever told you that you snore?" She asked and then giggled again. Roy didn't know how he was supposed to react. "Um..." He said blankly. Riza stopped giggly and looked at him very seriously. Or it was meant to look serious when actually the way her face scrunched up made her look very cute. "You have pretty eyes." She said, randomly. Roy blinked, caught by surprise at the compliment. "Thank you, Lieutenant?" He said, slowly.
"You're slow today, huh Mr. Boss Man?" Riza asked, giggling, some more. Roy stood up starting to get scared. Riza Hawkeye was a stoic and serious woman who would never be demoted to giggling even during her childhood.
It was weird.
"Wait!" Just as Roy stood up Riza grabbed a hold of his hand. "Stay." She said looking at him with big puppy eyes. Puppy eyes. What was happening? "Hawkeye," He began, reaching for her hand but noticed her eyelids dropping. "Tired?" He asked, gently. Riza merely nodded sleepily in response. Roy knelt back down and held her hand. "How about you go to sleep? And when you wake up we can have a long talk, okay?" He asked. Riza nodded and immediately fell back onto the pillow behind her. Her grip on Mustang's hand loosened but he decided to stay anyway.
A/N: This chapter was really cute.
I don't like it.
Roy: Must everything be depressing?
Chameleon: Yeah pretty much.
Roy: ...
Chameleon: So yeah the next chapter is gonna be exactly what you're expecting it to be about so it shouldn't take long for me to write. As for the other one on Ed and Winry... I'd rather not talk about it right now.
Ed: Why? ... What did you do to us?!
Chameleon: NOTHING! THAT'S THE GODDAMN PROBLEM!
Anyway enjoy my writing and please make sure to check out my crossover if you have time! As always DFTBA and remember: "Eat, drink, and be merry. And tomorrow you die."
Because what is more encouraging than that?
