Searching for the Mask of Majora

Clock Town

Night of the First Day
60 Hours Remain

The mayor's office was located in East Clock Town, up the stairs from the Stock Pot Inn and covered in stained glass windows. The interior was green, with benches on the side and a reception desk across from the door. On either side of the desk was another door, that led to rooms farther back into the building. The trio walked up to the receptionist. Link heard voices coming from one of the two rooms. Tael set the boy down. He smiled brightly, patting Link's head as he began speaking with the girl. "Is the mayor free?" he asked, and the receptionist in turn sighed loudly and rested her head on her palm.

"He's been in a conference with the carpenters and the soldiers ever since this morning when the office opened," she replied, rubbing the bridge of her nose with her fingers. "Something about whether or not to cancel the carnival. If you want to intervene, please do, I'm tired of listening to them scream at each other."

The siblings looked at each other with matching confused gazes, before Tael picked Link back up and carried him to the room on the left. The minute the door opened the voices grew into loud screams. The three of them watched silently as the argument heated up even more.

"The moon isn't getting closer!" the head of the carpenters cried, arms crossed over his chest. His workers were at his sides, staying silent for now, as if waiting for the right moment to speak. "Just continue on as planned! The carnival shouldn't be canceled!"

"No!" the soldier replied, and Link's head whipped to the other side of the room. "The moon is clearly getting closer! We need to evacuate the town as quickly as possible!"

They went on bickering back and forth, until the carpenter turned to the mayor, who was sitting at his desk, rubbing his head in worry. "What would Madame Aroma say to this, mister mayor?"

The older man at the desk looked up, staring hard into the bigger man's eyes. "Please don't bring my wife into this."

Tael took this as a sign to up and leave, taking the young Deku boy into his arms once again and leaving the conference room. The receptionist looked over at them, an eyebrow raised and an all-knowing smirk forming on her face. "Crazy argument huh?" she asked, and Tatl let out a puff of air. "I think you'd get more information from Madame Aroma. She's been kept up with everything thanks to her husband."

"Thank you," the blonde replied, taking her brother's hand and practically dragging him across the hall into the other room. There sat an older woman with red hair, a tired look on her face. "Madame Aroma?" Tatl asked politely, and the woman perked up.

"Oh, yes, hello. How may I help you?" she looked up at the three of them, and her eyes landed on Link. "Oh my, what a cute child!"

If Link had human skin instead of this wooden body, his face would have flushed. "Madame, do you know what you're going to do about the carnival?" Tael asked, setting Link down and moving to sit on one of the nearby chair. "There's a heated argument in your husband's office about it. We were planning on asking him, but it would be rude to interrupt."

"I wish you did," she replied, playing with her hair. "I hate listening to them all day. Ever since ten in the morning, those people have been here screaming their heads off." Link crawled onto Tael's lap, settling down comfortably.

"I heard that from the receptionist," Tael said, chuckling. "In fact, she also begged us to get them to stop. But they're too into it. I doubt we'd get a chance to speak."

Aroma smiled knowingly, nodding her head. "He's been bombarded with the carnival for a while. I've been more preoccupied with other things…"

"Like what, Madame?"

"My son, Kafei," she began sadly, looking into the fireplace. "He disappeared a while ago. You see, he was supposed to get married to Anju—"

Link blinked as the name sparked in his mind. He knew someone named Anju. At least, he thought he did.

"Their wedding was supposed to be the day after the carnival…but now he's gone missing! Poor Anju is heartbroken, but I'm his mother. I've been waiting years for this day."

Tatl spoke up. "We'll help you find him." Tael hissed at her, but she waved him off. "That is, if you want our help."

"It would be much appreciated, yes." She reached into her purse and pulled out a mask. "This mask should help. If you wear it, people will know that you're looking for Kafei."

Link took it from her, looking at the item before handing it to Tatl. Outside, the clock began tolling. "Oh goddesses," Tatl murmured, running a hand through her hair. "Did we really just spend the entire night here?"

Hey, I'm in Florida!

Vacations are a great time to type away at stories which have been gathering dust.
