Life Goes On
Nothing in any world was determined by the inhabitants. Hitsugaya knew that, but why? Why did everything have to turn out so terribly? Before their attack they had departed with a near perfect plan; they thought they would win.
At least Soul Society would.
As for the fate of Hitsugaya Toshirou and Hinamori Momo, things would not end as they would've liked.
Hitsugaya felt guilty for letting Hinamori fight in the first place. Not only was this the final battle to end a terrible war, but she had just barely recovered from a near death experience. Why would he have been so stupid as to let her fight alongside him? Why? He knew she wanted to see for herself; she wanted proof that Aizen was a traitor, and she wanted everything to end even more. She had wanted everyone in the real world and Soul Society to live in peace; without war.
So she fought.
And Hitsugaya made sure that he kept a constant eye on her; to keep her safe. He would not let hollows, Arrancars, or Aizen hurt her ever again. He would be the one to protect her.
But he failed.
One of the Espada's zanpakutou was about to pierce straight through Hinamori, but he had stepped in the way of the attack, only to have the blade pierce through both bodies. Now they both lay on the ground, unmoving and barely alive, both of their bodies plunged into each other's blood.
"I'm…sorry…" He managed to whisper into her ear. "I wish…that things could have ended differently. That maybe, we could've had a chance…together…"
"Shiro…chan…?" Hinamori questioned, not able to grasp what the boy was trying to say. Even in her right mind, she would've been confused, and she was dying, making it harder for her mind to comprehend any phrase spoken to her.
"I guess…what I'm trying to…say is that…I…"
"Me too, Shiro-chan." She spoke, interrupting his confession. "And I'm sorry too."
"Idiot. I was in the middle of telling you I loved you. You don't interrupt people when they're making a confession." He argued, all the while pulling her body closer to his. He didn't care how painful his body ached, how much his mind screamed at him; as long as he died with her.
The two were in their own world, as they whispered sweat nothings to each other before they died. Matsumoto Rangiku cried for the first time in a very long time. Her captain was minutes, no, seconds away from death, and she couldn't do anything. She couldn't do anything to save her captain, and she couldn't do anything to save Gin. With so many captains and lieutenants preoccupied with their own battles, and with so many captains and lieutenants gone, the final battle was on the shoulders of Kurosaki Ichigo.
The battle kept on going, shinigami and Arrancars alike kept fighting brutally on the battlefield, but even though life kept on moving around them, the life of Hinamori Momo had finally ended.
He smiled.
"I'm right behind you, Momo."
