Chapter 10: Family
Harry stood in front of a small house in the middle of nowhere. Well, not completely nowhere but it looked like the next house wasn't for another five minutes worth of walking. He turned to Ginny and saw she too was looking at the house with confusion. Ron, however, looked at the house with resignation. Harry wondered for the fifth time what his friend needed them to see.
"All right, Ron, what are we doing here?" Harry turned to his friend with his arms crossed over his chest.
Ron sighed but didn't answer him. Instead he began walking toward the house, leaving Ginny and Harry no choice but to follow. They reached the porch and Ron knocked on the door. Seconds later the door opened and he saw the last person he thought he would ever see.
Hermione Granger stood in the doorway, her face frozen in shock. Her eyes scanned the faces of her three guests. She blinked her eyes several times and still the three figures stood at her door. Her mouth open and closed like a fish. Finally her gaze rested on Ron. He was looking down at his feet, and when he did look at her he had a sheepish look on his face. Hermione was glaring at him when someone spoke.
"Hermione?"It was Harry who had spoken. He took one step toward her and Hermione unconsciously took one back. Harry noticed and he stopped his advance and his jaw tensed. Hermione saw the confusion, anger and sadness swimming in his green orbs. Either Ginny hadn't noticed or ignored what had transpired between Harry and Hermione, because the red-head suddenly launched herself onto Hermione.
"Hermione!" Ginny said, giving her a tight hug. Hermione's shock had rendered her motionless for a few moments but when her mind finally caught up, she returned Ginny's hug eagerly. She was speechless. She missed them so much. Hermione closed her eyes and reveled in the feeling of being in the arms of the person she considered family. Ginny pulled away and held Hermione at arm's length.
"Where have you been? What are you doing here? We thought we'd never see you again! We thought you were mad at us or something!" Ginny rambled on but Hermione only heard half of it. She was too preoccupied of thinking of the many ways she could kill one Ronald Weasley. How dare he take Harry and Ginny to her home without her permission! Did he think that just because she didn't hex him as soon as she'd seen him he could just barge back into her life? Did he think that just because she didn't wring his neck the first time he was here that he was forgiven? What did that stupid wanker tell them about her new life? More importantly did he tell them about Sophie? Judging from the endless questions Ginny was firing at her thankfully he hadn't told them much.
"Ginny, why don't you guys come inside? I'll make us some coffee." Hermione led them into the dining area. She then escaped to the kitchen and was relieved when none of them followed. She immediately went to work and flitted around the kitchen, doing anything she could think of to prevent her growing panic attack. She prepared the coffee machine, placed a tray on the counter, took the mugs and lined them up on the tray, and took out a bowl of sugar cubes. She even went as far as to look for biscuits to go with the coffee. When she couldn't find anything left to do, her breathing was uneven and her panic attack was starting to consume her. She was pacing in her kitchen and wringing her fingers.
Questions were whizzing through her head. How was she going to tell them about Sophie? How would they react to her daughter? Would they hate her? Would they accept Sophie? Her heart was beating so hard and so fast she felt as if it was going to jump right out of her chest. Thoughts were passing through her head a million miles per second and her emotions were clashing inside her. The most dominant of them was fear. She had dealt with fear before, yes. Fear of the unknown,of death,of change. These three were the ones that had scared her the most but they paled in comparison to her current one, fear of their rejection. In all those times she had always had someone. During her Hogwarts years and the War she had Harry and the Weasleys, and when she started her new life there was Emily and her family. But now, she would be facing this one alone. She felt lightheaded and she swayed slightly. Hermione gripped the counter hard, until her knuckles turned white, to steady herself. She forced herself to calm down and breathed slowly and deeply. In. Out. In. Out. She blocked out her thoughts and numbed her emotions. She had to calm down. She filled her head with the most important person in her life. Sophie.
Her daughter's smile, her laugh, her voice. The way Sophie hugged her tight as if she hadn't seen her mummy for a long time when she would come for her in Emily's bakeshop. The way Sophie kissed her goodnight and say "I love you, Mommy." And then an image popped into her head, the very first time she saw her daughter. The very first time Hermione saw Sophie was through the sonogram image when she was still pregnant with her. Sophie was still so small then, you couldn't even tell that it was a baby, but Hermione felt nothing but love and adoration toward her daughter. It doubled when Sophie was born and it only grew more and more. When Hermione first held her little baby in her arms, it was the absolute happiest moment of her life.
Hermione opened her eyes; she hadn't even realized she had closed them. She was calm and had a smile was on her face, which didn't really surprise her. Thinking of her daughter always made her feel better. The beeping of the coffee machine gave Hermione a start and reality made the smile on her face disappear. Suddenly she felt herself go weary and tired. And she hadn't even finished her second cup of tea yet. She poured the coffee into the cups. She sighed. She had to tell them why she had moved to France; she owed them that much. But how was she going to tell them? Oh, this was not the afternoon of relaxation she had prepared for herself.
Hermione went back into the dining room and placed the tray on the table. Ron was seated at the head of the table staring intently at it. Ginny was looking impatient in her seat, drumming her fingers on the table while Harry was leaning on the wall behind Ron, with his arms crossed. Ginny took both of Hermione's hand into her own the moment Hermione took a seat beside her.
"Hermione, you better start explaining right now because I am very nearly exploding with questions that I, I mean we," Ginny gestured to the three of them, "want answered."
Hermione nodded her head. Here goes nothing.
"Mummy, Sebastian and me are awake! Can we watch telly now?" Sophie's voice rang loud and clear through the silent house.
Hermione saw Ginny's eyes widen in surprise and she saw the same expression on Harry and Ron's faces. Hermione swallowed nervously. And here she thought she could ease them into her explanation but it seems Sophie's declaration of being awake had other plans.
"Maman! Oùes-tu, Maman?(Mummy! Where are you, Mummy?)" Sophie called again.
Ginny's hold on Hermione hands had tightened, bordering painful. She slowly pried her hands from the still shocked girl and quickly went into the living room to placate her daughter.
"Mummy!" Sophie rushed toward Hermione and hugged her legs. "Maman, Sébastien et moi, on a fininotresieste, est-cequ'onpeutregarder la télémaintenant? (Mummy, Sebastian and me are finish with our naps, can we watch telly now?)"
Hermione ran her hand through Sophie's hair and bent to kiss her forehead. "Of course, Love."
She turned on the television and Sophie immediately seated herself before it, with Sebastian on her side. Hermione watched her daughter for a few moments, wanting to preserve each and every moment she had with Sophie before everything went upside down as she was sure it would. She turned back toward her dining room. A heavy aura seemed to be emanating from it. Not dark or ominous but something equally daunting. She took a fortifying breath before facing her jury.
Ginny was pacing furiously whilst Ron was the color of a tomato and Harry was still in the corner. Hermione placed a one way Muffliato charm on the room. She didn't want Sophie to overhear anything they were about to talk, or possibly shout, about. Apparently Ginny heard because her head snapped in Hermione's direction. Ginny stormed toward her and Hermione though the younger witch would strike her.
"Hermione Jean Granger, you better explain yourself. Right. Now," Ginny said, sounding very much like Molly, which was indeed quite frightening.
Hermione took a seat and told them everything.
By the time Hermione was finished, Ron was an even darker shade of red, Ginny, also a bit red, was glaring furiously at him and Harry was still in his corner, looking like nothing had happened. Suddenly, Ginny stood up.
"I can't be in the same room as you right now, Ronald, or else I just might crucio you and not regret it!" Ginny screamed at Ron before stomping out. Ron winced.
Hermione turned her eyes to Harry who was watching her silently. Hermione wanted to squirm under his gaze but firmly held her ground and met his gaze, silently pleading him to say something, anything to let her know what he was thinking. Finally, after what felt like a year, he spoke.
"Why didn't you tell us?" Harry asked.
"If I had told you, would you have stopped me?" Hermione asked quietly.
"Of course, I would have! What kind of a question is that, Hermione?" Harry said, anger and frustration evident on his voice. Hermione didn't answer him and realization dawned on Harry.
"So, you just thought you'd leave us without saying anything? You didn't think we deserved an explanation?" Harry threw his hands up in the air. "Merlin, Hermione! You disappeared without a trace. We didn't know where you were or what might have happened to you! We went mad looking for you!"
Hermione flinched. She knew she had asked for a reaction, so she should have expected this.
"Yeah, 'Mione—" Ron started but Harry cut him off.
"Shut up, Ron! You are as much at fault as Hermione is," Harry said, his gaze never leaving Hermione.
"You didn't think about how your decision would affect us? Just thought you wanted to leave and that's that? Bit ironic, isn't it? Because you were the one who always told me to think about how my decision would affect everyone around me and here you are. You didn't about anyone but yourself, Hermione."
"That's not true," Hermione said in a voice thick with emotion. Harry's words had cut her deep and Hermione had been holding back her tears. She had thought that they would be mad at her, hate her even, but she didn't expect this. She expected them to hear what her reasons were for leaving. Not be judged by the way she had hurt their feelings. That was not fair.
"Yes, yes it is! You don't know how much you've hurt us by to cutting us out of your life like we were nothing and moved on. You were selfish, Hermione, and that's the truth," Harry said with finality, his judgment on her was made.
Tears were openly rolling down Hermione's cheeks as she stood up from her seat and stalked toward Harry. She did not deserve to be judged just because they got hurt! She did not deserve to be talked to like a selfish bitch without them listening to her side!
"You think you're the only one that's hurt, Harry? You thought it was easy for me to leave my family behind—"
"Seeing as you've done it before I didn't think it'd be that hard."
SLAP
Harry's face was turned to the side, an angry blotch of red coloring his right cheek.
"Don't you dare talk to me like that, Harry James Potter. You don't get to talk to me like I'm some criminal. You don't get to judge me because you got hurt. You didn't think it would hurt for me to leave behind everything, everything, I have ever loved to go and make a new life not just for me but also for my child in a place I've never been before? You think I wasn't crying whenever I thought of you, or Ron, or Ginny? I was all alone, Harry, and you thought it was easy? I never wanted to hurt you, or anyone. I needed to do this to protect my daughter. She would have been labeled as the child that Ron Weasley didn't love. She would have been ridiculed and pitied without even having been born. I chose to protect my child and if I could do it all over again, I would never change a single thing."
Hermione was breathing heavily when she finished but Harry still didn't look at her. Hermione sat back down and put her head in her hands, crying quietly.
"Mummy!"
Hermione heard Sophie and immediately dried her tears. She didn't think she had enough strength to stand, let alone walk toward her daughter; so instead, she lifted the silencing charm of the room and called out to her daughter. "In here, Sophie."
Sophie entered the room, head buried behind her white teddy bear, and made a bee line for Hermione.
"What is it, Sophie?" Hermione asked when Sophie got to her.
At first Sophie just stared at her, and then she reached out a hand and placed it on Hermione's cheek. Her little hand was cool on Hermione's cheek and she leaned her head into it.
"Are you crying, Mummy?" Sophie said concern coloring her voice.
Hermione squeezed her eyes to keep her tears at bay, and then nodded her head. "No, Love, mummy's ok. What is it that you needed, Sophie?"
Sophie leaned in to whisper in her ear. "Maman, Il y a une dame dehors qui a les cheveuxcommemoi et qui ditqu'elleest Tata Ginny. Est-cequec'est Tata Ginny, Maman? (Mummy, there is a lady outside with hair just like me and she says she is Aunt Ginny. Is she Aunt Ginny, Mummy?)"
Hermione smiled warmly at her daughter. "Yes, Sophie, she is Auntie Ginny."
The little girl nodded her head slowly. "Ok," she said, before walking out, completely oblivious to the other people in the room.
After Sophie left the room was completely silent and Hermione could hear the faint conversation Ginny and Sophie were having in the living room. The silence wasn't tense but it wasn't comfortable either but it did serve as a sign that everyone was still digesting everything that had transpired. Hermione refused to look at Harry in fear of seeing the same look of betrayal and accusation on his face. She knew she deserved his anger but she did not deserve to be accused like some shameless criminal. However, she couldn't stop the pain that filled her just by the thought that she had just lost her best friend. Moments later Ginny entered the room and she was a very dangerous shade of red, closely matching her hair, and she was glaring daggers at Ron. Ron made the mistake of looking at her sister; the rage on Ginny's face froze him on the spot. Without taking her eyes off of her brother, she said dangerously low, "Hermione, Harry, get out. I need to have a word with my dear brother."
Hermione didn't think she had ever seen Ginny this angry and didn't think twice about doing as she's said. Both Harry and Hermione swiftly exited the dining room, once they were outside Hermione heard Ginny half-scream the muffling charm. She hoped dearly that her dining area would not resemble the after-math of the War when she returned.
Hermione heard Sophie's laughter and followed it out into the backyard. She was acutely aware that Harry was following her. In the backyard, Sophie was playing happily with Sebastian; she was running around while Sebastian chased her. Sophie's laughter sounded so warm and innocent that Hermione couldn't help the smile that spread on her lips. Despite being accused and losing her best friend, she still had her daughter and that was all that mattered. She felt Harry stand beside but wasn't saying anything. She watched him in the corner of her eyes. He had his hands in his pockets and looked thoughtfully at her little girl. For a long time he didn't speak, he just stood there and watched Sophie. Hermione itched to know what Harry was thinking but didn't want to be the first one to break the silence between them. She wasn't the one in the wrong and throwing unfair accusations around, and she wasn't going to be the first one to cave damn it!
"Assis-toi!Assis-toi, Sebastian! (Sit! Sebastian, Sit!)" Sophie had taken to teaching her dog tricks, which wasn't much of a success seeing as Sebastian merely kept barking and wagging his tail. "Sebastian! Bad dog! Sit!" Sophie was forcing Sebastian's body to sit but the dog ran away from her and Sophie ended up being the one seated on the ground. "Sebastian!" Sophie yelled before she chased him around their backyard. Soon enough Sophie's irritated frown became a gleeful smile.
"She's beautiful." Hermione turned her head toward Harry. He was still looking at Sophie and there was a small smile on his face. "Sophie's her name, right?"
"Yeah," Hermione said, looking back to her daughter.
"Can I meet her?" Harry turned his head to face her.
"No," Hermione answered, however, after a moment of contemplation, she sighed. "But I want Sophie to meet her Uncle Harry."
Hermione turned to face Harry and she saw regret and shame on his face. Harry nodded his head.
"Sophie, come inside for a minute, Darling. I want to introduce you to someone." Sophie left Sebastian and appeared in Hermione's side in an instant, smiling expectantly at her mum. Sophie's eyes wandered to Harry before coming back to Hermione. Hermione stooped down so Sophie and she were at eye level. "Sophie, this is your Uncle Harry."
Sophie's eyes widened and she turned back to Harry. She smiled shyly at him. "Bonjour, Uncle Harry," Sophie said quietly.
Harry had a nervous smile on his faceas he stooped down as well. "Hi, Sophie, it's nice to meet you."
Sophie walked toward Harry and scrutinized his face, and then Sophie walked toward the couch in the living room and took something that was on it. Sophie came back holding a picture frame.
"Is this you, Uncle Harry?" Sophie said, holding the frame to her chest, the front facing Harry, and pointed at something in the picture. Hermione stood up but couldn't see what picture it was because Sophie had her back to Hermione. Harry took the picture frame from Sophie and smiled reminiscently at it. He looked back at Sophie and nodded. "Yes, that's me."
Sophie had a huge grin on her face but she turned shy again. "Can I hug you, Uncle Harry?"
Hermione's heart sank. She still didn't know what Harry thought of Sophie and was scared that Harry would reject her. If Harry rejected Sophie, that would seal the fate of their friendship. If someone couldn't accept her daughter then whatever relationship existed or would have existed was surely out of the question. Hermione waited with bated breath for Harry's reaction.
Harry smiled at Sophie and opened his arms to her. Sophie squealed and ran into her Uncle Harry's arms. Harry wrapped her arms around Sophie's little body and Hermione couldn't help tears that sprang to her eyes. There was an excited smile onSophie's face when she pulled away. "Uncle Harry, do you want to see my room? Auntie Ginny said I could show her my room after she talked to Daddy! Can we play? We can play fetch with Sebastian! And then–"
"Uhmm, Sophie, before we play can I talk to your mummy first? I just need to say something to her," Harry said and glanced at Hermione.
Sophie pouted. "Is it a really, really long talk?"
Harry scratched the back of his neck. "I don't know, Sophie."
Sophie still pouted. "Then we can play when you finish talking to mummy?"
Harry smiled. "Absolutely."
Sophie smiled at him. "Ok!" Then she ran off to rejoin Sebastian in the backyard. The little dog looked relieved at the return his owner.
Harry stood up and faced Hermione but did not meet her eyes. Hermione waited patiently for him to say what he needed to say. After a few seconds, Harry sighed.
"I'm so sorry, Hermione," he said quietly. Hermione didn't answer him, and he took this as a sign to continue. "I'm sorry for judging you without listening to you. It was stupid and wrong and I deserve that slap you gave me. Maybe more. I was just so hurt when you left without even talking to me. I thought we were family and it hurt that you couldn't talk to me about whatever you were going through. A lot of people I love are gone and when you left…" Harry trailed off. "I was so angry and… I let my anger get the best of me. I'm sorry and I understand that you're mad at me, but I just… I don't want to lose my best friend again."
Hermione felt tears pooling in her eyes. "I'm sorry too, for hurting you, I never wanted to. And yes, we were family, Harry, but Sophie means more to me than my family. She is the most important person in the world to me. She is my family now."
Harry looked up at her and Hermione saw the sadness and regret in his eyes as tears fell down his face. "Hermione, can I still be a part of your family? Can I still be Sophie's Uncle Harry?"
Hermione saw nothing but sincerity in his green orbs and felt her heart clench painfully in her chest. A warm smile spread over her face. "You were never not a part of my family, Harry."
Harry's green eyes sparkled with joy as he took her in his arms. Harry squeezed her tight and Hermione's smile grew wider. Ginny suddenly went out of the dining room looking like she just woke up from a pleasant dream. Hermione pulled away from Harry as Ginny spotted them and walked over to them. The youngest Weasley smiled happily at them, which was quite amazing because of the extreme change in her mood and quite frightening because Hermione feared for what had become of her dining area.
"Hey! Did I miss anything?" Ginny asked them.
Harry chuckled. "You have no idea."
"Ginny, what happened?" Hermione asked quietly.
"Oh, you mean between Ron and me?" Ginny giggled. "Come on, I'll show you."
Harry and Ginny went ahead to the dining room. Hermione called for Sophie to come inside and told her daughter to play in her room instead. Hermione never left Sophie alone in the backyard in fear that her daughter might hurt herself. Sophie obeyed and Hermione went after her two friends. Hermione found Harry, looking scared and furious at the same time, lecturing Ginny while Ron was slumped forward on his chair unconscious. Hermione examined her dining room and was relieved to see that everything was just as it should be.
"What happened to Ron?" Hermione asked as she reached the couple.
"Ginny umph–" Ginny's hand covered Harry's mouth. "I taught him a lesson," was all Ginny said with a smug look on her face. Harry removed Ginny's hand.
"You're not supposed to do that! I didn't even know you knew how to do that!" Harry hissed.
"Do what?" Hermione asked confused. Ron, still unconscious, was now muttering and twitching.
Ginny narrowed her eyes as her brother. "Mum taught me a really neat spell to teach a lesson."
Harry backed a step away from Ginny.
Hermione shuddered. Molly was a strict believer of discipline. Whatever spell it was that Ginny had used was surely not pretty, if Harry's scared eyeing of Ginny meant anything. Hermione was just about to ask what this spell was when Ron suddenly screamed.
"Nooooo!" Ron was running his hands over his face, seemingly trying to get something off of him. Once he was convinced that nothing was on him, Ron looked around him and realization landed harshly on him. When his eyes reached the three he pointed an accusatory finger at Ginny. "You!"
Ginny raised an eyebrow at him. "Yes, Ronald. Me. You're darling baby sister."
Ron glared at Ginny. "How did you know how to do that? Mom's the only one that knows how to do that!"
Ginny smirked at him. "Mum taught me. Good thing too."
Ron stood up and leaned forward, he opened his mouth to undoubtedly yell at Ginny but his sister cut him off. "And that's not the only one she taught me."
Ron's eyes widened but quickly composed himself. "You're bluffing. Mum wouldn't teach you those spells."
"After what I just did to you, how much would you like to wager on that one?" Ginny said smugly.
Ron visibly recoiled and sat back down, muttering under his breath. Ginny turned toward Hermione and gave her a sweet smile. Hermione had forgotten how dangerous Weasley tempers could get.
"Don't you think that was a little extreme, Gin?" Harry asked.
"No. No, I do not," Ginny said with much finality, she turned to Hermione. "Oh and he wants to say something to you, 'Mione."
Hermione turned to look at Ron who had stopped his muttering but didn't look at any of them. When he didn't say anything Ginny said, "Go on, Ron. Tell her what you told me."
Ron sighed in defeat and then took a deep breath. He sat up and looked Hermione straight in the eye. "I want you to come back with us to London."
Hermione was expecting this. She knew that they would convince her to come back with them. To go back home. But she already had an answer for that. "No."
"But 'Mione–" Ron said but Hermione cut him off. "No, Ron. How dare you order me to go back to London with you? You think you can just waltz in here and tell me what to do? Well you are sadly mistaken, Ronald Weasley. I let you in not because I've bloody forgiven you. No, I let you in to meet Sophie because she deserved to know who her father is. I never did anything in favor of you, Ron. Everything I did concerning you was all for Sophie. Do not think so highly of yourself. You lost that when you decided to turn your back on us."
Hermione was breathing raggedly when she finished and she took deep calming breaths. Ginny had sat down and Harry stood behind her. It seemed that Harry was in deep contemplation.
"But 'Mione, we can't just leave you here! You have to come back home with us, where you belong. This isn't right," Ron tried reasoning to her but it only made her rage grow.
"No, you're not right, Ron. I will not go back. What will happen to Sophie if we go to London? She will be the talk of the town, 'The unwanted daughter of Ronald Weasley'. That is not how I want my daughter to see herself. She most certainly does not deserve that. My daughter and I are staying here." Hermione crossed her arms and tilted her chin up, daring Ron to refute her.
Ron looked helplessly at her, opening his mouth to say something but nothing ever came out. "Harry! Tell her to go back with us!" Ron said desperately at Harry.
Hermione gazed at Harry, who held her eyes. For a long time the two merely stared at each other. Hermione knew Harry understood her. He had been all over the news ever since he was just a child. His every move documented and criticized. He had always been the subject of the prying eyes of the world, and he hated every moment of it. The only difference between Harry and Sophie was that Harry always had praise while Sophie, Hermione was sure, would only receive unfair judgment and unwanted pity.
Finally Harry sighed and hung his head. He looked at Ron. "I'm with Hermione on this one, Ron."
Hermione smiled warmly at him and hugged him tightly. For a moment, she wasn't sure he would support her but her fears were unnecessary as he had always had her back. Ron stared wide eyed at them, mouth agape. "Ginny!" he whined helplessly. She merely raised her eyebrow at him and turned her head away. Hermione felt warmth spread in her chest. Her friends, except Ron obviously, supported her even if she had hurt them deeply with her departure. They didn't hate them as she had thought they would. She felt tears prickle her eyes but held them back. Ron looked disbelievingly at them. He looked like they had just told them that they were all Hippogriffs merely polyjuiced as humans.
"You can't be serious!" Ron stood up and started pacing. "You'll just let her stay here? You won't even talk her into coming home with us? That's it?"
"Yes, Ron, that's it. This is Hermione's family, no one has a say in it except her," Harry replied calmly.
"I have a say in this. I'm the dad aren't I?" Ron said.
This statement added fuel to her ever growing rage toward the stupid wanker.
"Dad?! You call yourself her father? No, Ron, you were never her father. You were merely her sperm donor!" Hermione screamed at him. "You do not have a say in this family because you never wanted to be a part of it! You have no right to have a say in her life unless I allow you to, so stop your whining because no matter what you say we will not go back to London."
Ginny put a hand on her arm and squeezed lightly, telling her to calm down. Hermione closed her eyes and took deep calming breaths. When she opened her eyes, Ron was glaring at her and she glared back at him.
"Sophie, Sophie, Sophie, that's all you ever talk about. What about you 'Mione? We want you back with us," Ron said pleadingly.
Hermione saw red. She took out her wand and flicked it at Ron. Ron collided with the far wall and remained stuck there. Hermione stalked toward him and she pointed her wand under his chin. "Yes, Ron. Sophie, Sophie, Sophie, because Sophie is my everything."
Ron opened his mouth but Hermione cut him off. "Choose your words very carefully, Ronald. Unless you want to be permanently stuck in whatever spell Ginny used on you."
When he didn't say anything and merely looked away, Hermione moved away and lowered him to the ground. Ron crossed his arms. "I will find a way to get you back home." Before Hermione could question him on what he was going to do, Ron stormed off. The sound of the slammed door echoed through the house.
