Chapter Four
Kono frowned at the large screen of the bull pen in 5-0 headquarters. She had hacked a security cam in an ATM to find the footage and she was not happy with what she saw. Even though they had their own case to work, she couldn't help but be worried about her friend and fellow 5-0 officer, Leilah. So, she had followed Leilah's movements on whatever security camera she could get her hands on until she found this one. Steve wasn't going to be happy when he saw this.
Speaking of, the 5-0 boss came waltzing into the office, his face set and focused on the case at hand. That is until he glanced at the big screen. Kono had paused it and it was hard to make out the scene, but Steve still cocked an eyebrow, "What's this?"
Kono hesitated, unsure if she should really tell him. There was no telling how he'd take it or what he would do. McGarrett noticed her hesitation and folded his arms impatiently, "Kono."
"It's security footage from an ATM on Po'oi," Kono confessed.
Recognition filled McGarrett's face and he looked at the screen with more interest. "I'm sorry, boss," Kono explained. "I know it's not our case, but I was worried about her. I just wanted to keep an eye on her."
By now, Chin Ho and Danny had joined them, both looking at the screen with interest. "What's this?" Chin Ho asked.
Without answering, McGarrett told Kono to play it. They all watched as a figure came onto the screen: Leilah, dressed in her impossibly short skirt, a revealing top, and five inch heels that she hadn't worn since her days in vice. Three other figures entered the screen behind her and drew her attention. Danny stiffened as they watched the women exchange words. When the three attacked Leilah, Danny balled his fists tightly, turning his knuckles white. Steve clenched his jaw but said nothing. They watched as Leilah's beaten form got up and staggered off screen.
Kono stopped the video and glanced around at her fellow officers, "We have to help her."
McGarrett snapped out of his silence, "I need to have a talk with Malia."
Danny was one step ahead of him. Before Steve had finished his sentence, Danny was out the door and headed down the stairs to the section of the police headquarters that housed vice. Hurrying after their friend, Steve, Kono, and Chin Ho were only steps behind him as he burst into Malia's office. The startled captain had no time to brace himself as Danny whirled his chair away from his desk and grabbed the captain by the collar.
"Danny," Steve warned, quick to close the door behind them so no other officers could witness what was going on.
Danny took a shaky breath before seething, "You were supposed to protect her."
"I don't know what you're talking about," Malia spit back.
Steve stepped in but didn't order Danny to take his hands off the captain, "I told you that the only way I would agree to letting Leilah work with you was if you had her back. I said I would hold you responsible if anything happened to her."
"I know," Malia insisted. "She's been on the case one day, if anything happens to her, I'll let you know."
"Something did happen to her," Danny shoved the captain hard and let go of him, waving his hands as he talked. "You didn't even have a man out there to back her up."
Steve filled the captain in on what they saw on the ATM footage but the captain was unfazed, "She's alright." He insisted, "She's had worse than that and it will only help her street credibility."
With a grunt of frustration, Danny slammed his fist on the desk. Steve shot a warning glance at his partner, "Where is she staying, Malia?"
The captain shook his head, "I'm not letting you take her off this case, McGarrett."
"You didn't want her on the case to begin with," Danny shouted.
"We'll just check on her," McGarrett reassured. "We probably couldn't get her off the case even if we tried anyway. She's doing this for her friend. We won't break her cover but we will go check on her."
Malia sighed, "Fine. She's staying in room 15 at the Shoreline Hotel. Don't break her cover."
Steve nodded before leading his team out of the office. The eyes of the vice officers watched them as they left. Danny heard a faint "Haole" comment but ignored it, eager to check on Leilah.
"Chin, Kono, I want you to stay here. See if you can get any leads on the case Leilah is working," Steve instructed. "Officially we can't work on the case, but we're not leaving Leilah out there alone. Also, figure out where that hair sample came from so we can wrap up our case quickly and focus on this one. I want Leilah off the streets as soon as possible."
The team split up and Danny and Steve hurried to the car. They made a quick stop at Steve's house to dress in less conspicuous clothes and trade out Danny's Chevy for Steve's old beat up truck then headed for the hotel. It was run down, one story, easy to find and easy to forget which is why so many druggies and prostitutes used it. Room 15 was located along the back, out of view from the street and tucked away from the heavily trafficked areas.
Danny gave a light tap on the door, keeping his hood up and his head down. Steve did the same beside him. After several minutes, Danny knocked again, slightly louder. When there was still no response, Danny glanced at Steve before trying the knob which opened easily.
With a glance at each other, they silently drew their guns and stepped inside, closing the door behind them and quickly searching the room.
"She's not here," Danny ran a hand through his hair. There was blood on the bedspread where Leilah had collapsed the night before but the rest of the room looked untouched, no sign of a struggle, no sign of life at all.
