Night came on day one without incident. The fire benders had combined their powers to make a massive bonfire that both kept the tributes warm and scared away any attackers, animals or human. Mako leaned back against the cornucopia picking at the remaining roast fish and root stew that had been their dinner. All 18 of the tributes on Korra's side worked together to create a little community. Earth benders worked together to create rock shelters for those who didn't fit in the cornucopia, and fire benders made a fire and cooked the food, while water benders purified the water from the nearby lake and caught some fish. Tahno and his group had yet to be seen.

"What now?" Mako asked Korra who was sitting right beside him. "This is nice and all but we can't stay here like this forever. Even if Tahno doesn't attack, the game makers will do something. I don't know what I'm dreading more."

"Um, I don't know, you guys can do what you want."

"You're the leader Korra; you have to make the decisions. The others aren't going to listen to me."

"Well, if it's up to me, I say we wait. I'm not fighting them unless they want to fight us."

Mako stretched himself out and yawned. "Alright then." He closed his eyes.

"What are you doing?" she turned towards him.

His eyes remained closed the slightest smile touching his lips. "Sleeping. If you don't want to do anything then I might as well save my energy."

Korra groaned in frustration. "You're impossible." She was about to snuggle up next to him when Asami came running from the other side of the clearing.

"Korra, you might want to see this." Korra and Mako stood up and ran behind her to the group of earth benders that were already over there.

"What's going on?" Korra asked trying to see what was behind the earth benders. They stepped aside.

"careful." one of them said.

"I don't see what you're…oof." Korra fell into a hole about 10 feet deep and wide enough for about five people. "Did you guys dig this?"

"Not exactly." Said Lea, a tall skinny girl, her long black hair pulled unto a long pony tail that reached him mid back. "We were trying to dig up the mines and one of us fell in. It's some kind of tunnel."

Korra tried to get a flame going but it quickly went out. "Mako, can I get a little light?" Mako hopped down into the hole and lit his hand up. The tunnel seemed to go to the South and down deeper, there weren't any turns in sight. Asami raised them both back up so they could get out of the hole then restored the hole to how it was originally. "I want some Earth benders to explore the tunnel and find out where it goes, or how we can use it to get around the arena. Take a fire bender or two so you can see. If you meet any of Tahno's group on your way don't fight them unless they attack you first. Understand?"

All the earth benders nodded. Asami, Lea and a boy Korra didn't know hopped in. "Coming Mako?" Asami asked, he shook his head.

"Wait for Petra." Mako said, he ran back to camp and came back a few moments later with Petra and a fire bender girl. "You said you want to prove yourself, now's your chance." Petra nodded and hopped into the whole with the rest. "Keep them safe." And with that the explorers took off. Mako and Korra walked back in silence and Mako took up his previous position against the cornucopia. Korra joined him.

"Mako why?" She stopped when she realized his eyes were closed. "Are you asleep?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't you go with Asami? Won't she be mad?"

"Like I said, I'm tired." He learned towards her. "I don't care if Asami gets mad or not. Besides -" He whispered in her ear but whatever he was going to say next was lost as the symbol of the United Republic lit up the night sky while the national anthem played, and for the first time in the history of the Bending Games, not one person died on day one.

"Now if you don't mind." Mako settled down to his sleeping position and Korra attempted to do the same, she tentatively put her head on his shoulder. She looked up catching his raised eyebrows.

"What? You're more comfortable than the ground."

"I'm not complaining." He rested his head on top of hers and the two quickly fell asleep.

Tenzin didn't care what type of parking tickets the equalists would give him for parking his flying bison in the middle of the street outside of Lin's house, what he had to say couldn't wait any longer. He walked straight into the house without bothering to knock. "Lin!" He said panting, not so much from exertion but from adrenaline.

"Tenzin!" Lin said coming down the stairs pulling a dark green silk robe on over her night gown. "Do you have any idea what time it is?"

"Yes but I had ask you something." Lin raised her eyebrow, she had to admit in some of her more intense dreams she imagined Tenzin coming to her in the middle of the night, asking her to run away with him, and other things. Yet Lin knew she was fully awake, and couldn't help but let annoyance grace her features.

"Well out with it." Her hands on her hips.

"I had to ask you what your favorite type of candy is."

"Tenzin I don't understand what this has to do with…"

"…Mine is candy corn."

"Don't be ridiculous nobody likes candy corn." She caught his eyes and nodded, remembering exactly what was going on. Tenzin had just told her It was time. Time to call the resistance together and the rebellion to begin.

"My favorite is lemon drops." Tenzin thanked her with a bow and left.

Lin walked to the phone in the living room and dialed. "It's time." She said quickly when the other end picked up and then she hung up the phone.

Asami didn't know how long they'd been walking, it could have been hours, it could have been days. It was probably minutes, it felt like days. At the end of the straight tunnel it had veered off into separate tunnels. Asami and Petra went right, while the rest went left.

"So Mako seems like a pretty chill guy." Petra said breaking the silence.

"You're point is?"

"Well, he's letting his girl walk through a dark tunnel with another guy."

She turned, her eyes lit up like green fire. "Do me a favor and never talk to me again." She spat

"Whatever, just trying to make conversation." There was a thunking sound above them.

"Did I think I heard voices." Said a muffled voice from above.

"Try making an earthquake to try and scare them." The earth above them rumbled causing dirt and rock from the ceiling then an all-out cave in that extended down the tunnel in both directions as far as she could see. Asami deflected most of the rubble so she was uninjured but despite her best attempt, Petra was on the ground, not moving.

"Look at what we have here." Said the drawling voice of Tahno, who not hovered over the edge of the trench. "Let me help you out of there Princess." He held out his hand.

"Bite me." She spat.

"That can be arranged." Asami Rolled her eyes and slung Petra across her back before walked back the way she came. Yet after she'd walked about 20 feet she felt her legs freeze up painfully and no matter how hard she tried she couldn't fight it. She looked up at the sky and saw the full moon casting its pale glow. Tahno walked up beside her. "You can't get away that easily."

"You're a blood bender?" She asked, her vocal cords felt strained and beads of sweat were forming on her forehead as she tried desperately to fight Tahno's manipulation.

"There's a lot you don't know about me. See you should have followed me instead of that half-baked Uhvatar. I'm going to win this thing, and you're going to help me."

"Yeah right." She grunted out.

"I'm not giving you the option. Now, you've come very far tonight so I think its best you go to sleep." With that Asami's world faded to black.
