Chapter two.
xox
Mercedes squirmed on her blue sleeping mat and accidently kicked her friend, Tina in the side. "Owww." She hissed at Mercedes, before turning over and frowning at her friend. "Why'd you do that?"
"Sorry, Tina." She giggled and whispered quietly to her. The lights in the room were dimmed and all of the children were laying on blue mats on the floor taking their nap. All except Tina and Mercedes. The two teachers were in the corner talking quietly under their breath, their backs to the kids, which allowed Mercedes enough time to silently struggle with her mat to pull it closer to Tina. The dark haired girls smiled, and then Tina furrowed her eyebrows.
"Why didn't you play with us today?" Us, being the rest of the girls. They played games of tag and attempted to jump rope, but today Mercedes didn't go play with Tina and the other girls, because she spent her recess with Sam and Ms. Pillsbury.
"I made a new friend." She whispered back, beaming brightly. Tina frowned. "I thought I was your friend." Mercedes returned Tina's frown. "I am. I'm his friend too, now." She said and smiled. Tina scrunched up her nose.
"A boy!?" She said a bit loudly, loud enough for the teachers to turn and scan the sleeping bodies, not finding the source they turned back to their table. Mercedes eyed Tina. "Yes, a boy. He's nice too. Not a meanie like Noah." She huffed, recalling the small boy yanking on her hair and laughing when she started to cry, or the time he sneezed on her and then walked away without even saying sorry.
Tina giggled, this time catching the attention of the teachers. Their eyes locked onto the small dark haired girl and Mercedes and shook their heads and put their finger to their lips. Both girls inhaled and then closed their eyes and laid their heads back down on the thin foam bricks. And still, Mercedes was restless, and probably would be until the day was over for them.
Across the hall, another classroom full of young children were also napping, all except for one little boy tossed and turned, before giving up on naptime. He opened his wide green eyes, only to see his mentor, Ms. Pillsbury and his teacher sitting in the corner talking. The aching silence echoed in his ears. He couldn't hear, and no, he couldn't read lips just yet, but he could tell by the way Ms. Pillsbury looked at his teacher that she was worried about something .
He watched as she moved her hands frantically, and the other woman put a hand on her shoulder, the same way Ms. Pillsbury did when Sam was sad. He sat his head up to watch them talk. A little skinny boy sat up too, he was wearing really thick glasses and he yawned, but didn't look tired.
'He must not want to nap either.'
Sam waved and smiled, and the boy returned the wave with a shy smile. They must have been making too much movement because Ms. Pillsbury looked over and saw the two boys sitting up. She motioned to Sam to lay back down and rest, but he shook his head and pouted. Miss Pillsbury smiled and brought one hand up near her head and wiggled her middle finger, almost as if she were scratching her head, indicating the question, "Why?"
Sam frowned slightly and sighed softly, he wrote in the air with his hands, signing the comment, "You looked sad." And pointed to the teacher who had her back turned completely. He frowned even more when he motioned the word sad, using his hands and brushing his outspread fingers against his cheeks.
The other little boy watched their soundless conversation in awe, his mouth hung open a little as he watched. Ms. Pillsbury shook her head. "No, not sad, worried."
Sam tilted his head slightly, it was his turn to make the motion for, "why?" Ms. Pillsbury smiled softly and shook her head, and told him she would talk to him later, and he should nap until the end of the school day. Sam gave her a frown and then nodded, and complied, laying back down. He looked at the boy who kept looking back and forth from Ms. Pillsbury and to him, and then just closed his eyes.
Ms. Pillsbury sighed. Sam really was way too smart for his age. Especially to pick up on her sense of sadness. Though she wasn't truly sad, she was worried about him making new friends, but it seemed like he was doing a good job, she noted as she glanced to the boy in the thick glasses. She waved at him and he smiled and laid back down quickly. Maybe Sam would make another friend by the end of the school day.
She really hoped he did.
The lights turned on and it was time to clean up before the kids left for. Mercedes and Tina helped pick up all the blue mats and they giggled as they hurried to tidy up, but while Tina was hurrying to go home, Mercedes was racing to get outside and talk to her new friend.
Once class was dismissed, Mercedes rushed outside and waited by the doors. A few minutes later, after a bunch of kids rushed out of the building, She saw Sam and Miss Pillsbury and next to them was a small asian kid with thick rimmed glasses. Ms. Pillsbury was signing to Sam and but talking to both of them, she could tell because the older woman kept looking from one boy to the other. Seeing the smile on Sam's face made it clear that he had indeed, made a new friend during nap time. Mercedes greeted Sam with a wave and said hello to Miss Pillsbury who returned the greeting, the small kid said his goodbyes to both Miss Pillsbury and Sam before they could introduce Mercedes to him, but it went unnoticed to Mercedes, she was just glad to talk to her new friend again.
Sam and Mercedes walked in quiet with Ms. Pillsbury behind them, they found a bench and sat together. Mercedes dangled her legs and swayed them back in forth before turning to Sam. "If my mom gets here before yours, do you wanna see if we could go play at my house?" She asked, and glanced to Miss Pillsbury, who was already mouthing and signing to him what Mercedes said.
He smiled and nodded, indicating the word 'yes' multiple times. Mercedes was chattering about how they could play with some of her toys and how her mom might even make cookies for them. While she chatted she didn't notice the car that pulled up beside the curb.
"Mamma!" Mercedes greeted her mom and waved her over to the three of them, when Mercedes mom got out of the car and approached, she looked at Sam and pointed to him. "Mamma, this is my new friend Sam. He can't hear us though because his ears are turned off, but he's really nice."
Mrs. Jones looked down at the small blond haired boy and smiled gently at him, unsure how to talk to him, glancing at the woman who stood next to him with a reassuring wink. She assumed it was his mom until Mercedes continued. "And this is Ms. Pillsbury. She's his..." She wrinkled her nose trying to remember the word.
"Interpreter." Miss Pillsbury finished, and signed to Sam what was being said. Mercedes mom smiled and looked at Sam and very slowly but not too slowly, said "It's very nice to meet you, Sam." Sam smiled shyly and looked over at Ms. Pillsbury and signed rather quickly. "He says its nice to meet you as well."
Right as Mercedes was about to ask her mom something, another car pulled in front of Mercedes mom's. It was a pretty blue car, Mercedes thought as a tall blond woman walked out of the car. She had pretty green eyes, just like Sam did. Sam tugged on Mercedes' shirt and she looked at him, he pointed to his mom and carefully he signed the word, and mouthed a word, so Mercedes could understand him. He took an outstretched hand and tapped his thumb on his chin twice. Ms. Pillsbury watched as Mercedes nodded and looked up at the interpreter. "Mercedes, do you understand what Sam is trying to say?" She asked as she signed for Sam to follow their conversation.
"Yes, Ms. Pillsbury. Sam is telling me that that's his mamma." She said with confidence. Sam beamed at her and waved his mom over. Sam's mom approached with a smile and glanced over at Mercedes' mom. "Oh, hello again, Angela!" She said with a wave and glanced to the small Mercedes and Sam and then to Ms. Pillsbury. "Thank you, Emma for waiting with Sam."
"Anytime!" She said with a smile and nudged at Sam. "He's a good boy, and he made new friends today."
"Did you?" Sam's mom said with a smile looking over at Mercedes with a wink. "And who is this?" She said, and signed and pointed to Mercedes. She knelt down as well, to be eye level with Sam and Mercedes. Sam hesitated at first but then grinned. "Mercedes!" He signed excitedly Using his first three fingers to create an M with his right hand and nodded his hand three times near his heart after having trouble spelling her name.
"Well! It's wonderful to meet you Mercedes," Sam's mom used the nickname that he had just made for her, and placed her three fingers into the letter M and nodding her hand near her heart three times. "And it's really good to see you again, Angela." She said with a smile that lit up her entire face. Mercedes tugged on her mom's shirt.
"What is it dear?"
"Can they come over for peanut butter and jelly?" Mercedes whispered.
"It's not polite to whisper around others, sweetie." Mercedes mom interjected and took Mercedes hand. "Mary, would you two like to come over for dinner tonight? It's a beautiful day and we live a couple of blocks away from here, I just have to head to the store for some groceries. "
Mary smiled down at Sam who looked at her to translate. "We would love to come over for dinner, but not this evening, tonight Sam gets to talk to his dad on skype, he'd be really disappointed if he missed his call. Tomorrow would be fine after Sam's Sign Language class."
Mercedes lit up and tugged on her mom's shirt, "Can I go too? I wanna learn to talk to Sam," Angela frowned slightly and looked over at Mary for approval, Emma interjected.
"Oh! That would be a lovely idea, wouldn't it Mary? If Mercedes could go with Sam to his classes? It would be only fair considering Sam is now her friend. Angela, you should go too!" Emma winked at Mercedes who beamed from ear to ear.
Angela smiled, what was the big deal, sure? "Sure! Let me just give you my cellphone number, Mary." While the two mothers talked about plans for tomorrow the two kids stood around Ms. Pillsbury. Sam poked at Mercedes, and he started signing. Mercedes hesitated and looked at Ms. Pillsbury. "He says he's excited about tomorrow and maybe he can bring some toys over so you two can play."
Mercedes nodded in agreement "Okay." She said, and Angela called to her daughter.
"Okay sweetie, time to go!" Mercedes waved at her new friend and at Ms. Pillsbury who waved back.
Mercedes fidgeted all the way home in the backseat of the car, she was excited about spending time with her new friend tomorrow.
