A/N: Sorry for no update in a few days, guys, I've been busy with some stuff!
"Ow, shit... What the fuck just happened?" A boy asked as he sat up, rubbing his head. He looked at his friend, who was rubbing her eyes due to dust that had gotten inside of them. "Are you alright, Kan?"
"Yes, I'm fine, Karkat. Are you okay?" The girl asked in return. The boy named Karkat nodded. "Good," she said as she looked around the room that was quickly filling with smoke. "Oh no... I think we should get out of here,"
"Nah shit, Kanaya," Karkat said as he stood up, offering his hand out to help her up. She took it, thanking him. "So what do you think that explosion was?"
"I have no idea. Lets just get out of here before anything bad happens."
The two had been in the teachers lounge, making copies for their teacher. There wasn't anybody else in there at the time, luckily. They went outside of the room, trying to find their way through the thick smoke. Kanaya covered her mouth and nose, poking Karkat and telling him to do the same thing so he wouldn't pass out due to lack of oxygen.
It was hard to see where they were going. So, unfortunately, they made a wrong turn. They went down a hallway that was engulfed in flames on the other side. Karkat made an attempt to turn back around the other way, but the flames had made their way around the hallway and to the other side. The two were trapped by flames and rubble.
Kanaya heard a cracking noise coming from above them. She looked up, to see that the ceiling was about to collapse. On top of Karkat. Exclusively on impulse, she ran towards him and pushed him out of the way as the debris was falling. All Karkat saw after that was Kanaya cringing in pain on the ground. The back of her shirt was torn completely, leaving scratches and burns on her back from spot-on contact with flames. The debris was about to crush him had nearly crushed his best friend. She had been quick enough to get out from underneath the rubble before it fell down completely.
"Shit, Kanaya! What the fuck were you thinking?!" He said as he knelt down next to her, putting his hand on her shoulder.
"I wasn't thinking," she replied in a shaky voice. "You would have died if I hadn't acted." Kanaya gathered up her strength and stood up with her friends help. "We have to find a way out of the flames,"
"There's no way we can!" Karkat shouted. "We're stuck, Kanaya. And we're probably going to fucking die here, as if this place wasn't already a hellhole."
"Karkat, stop. That's not the kind of attitude to have in this situation." Kanaya glared.
The two bickered for a few minutes before they heard the sound of running footsteps through the flame. They heard what they thought to be shouting, as well. Flames were put out to their right. Two firefighters stood there, one holding an axe and the other a fire extinguisher. Both of them were signaling the two teens to follow them. Karkat had to help Kanaya at first, but adrenaline had kicked in and she felt no pain. She was able to run fine.
The firefighters led them outside, where the paramedics were waiting. A sigh of relief came from both of the teens. "Thank you so much," Kanaya said to the firefighters before they went back inside of the school to find more possible survivors. Some of the paramedics who were there took Kanaya to the back of an ambulance to temporarily treat her wounds. Karkat stood next to her.
"Hey, Kanaya, I'm sorry about that. Thank you for saving me. You're a hell of a lot braver than I am," he said.
"Don't worry about it, Karkat. It was the least I could do. I didn't want to lose my best – ow – friend." She said as a paramedic put antibacterial spray on her wounds. Karkat smiled a little bit, and she smiled back.
"Okay, kiddos. Here's whats going to happen; we're going to take both of you to the hospital. Kanaya – was that your name? – Okay, Kanaya, you have very bad second degree burns on your back as well as third degree. To treat these, we'll have to admit you to the hospital and keep you under watch in the burn unit. Karkat – That was your name, right? – Alright, you can ride with us in the ambulance. We have a phone that you can use to call your parents in the ambulance." The paramedic lady told the two teens. They gladly cooperated, although Kanaya dreaded the hospital. She didn't regret going out of her way to save Karkat, though. That was definitely worth it.
