After an hour of silence and sideways glances from Light, Ryuzaki decided he wanted some tea. He was still feeling tired from the fight, and something delectably sweet would help with that problem. Reaching for the sugar cubes, he began to make his sugar tower.
"You know, Ryuzaki, all that sugar is bad for you."
Said sugar-holic turned his head crookedly towards Light. Here we go again... Hadn't they had this argument before? He'd told the student time and time again that there was nothing wrong with his sugar consumption. He said that it even made him more aware, which boosted his intelligence. Light had scoffed at that little bit of information. There was no way that was true.
"I've already told you," L started slowly, turning back to the computer screen, "it isn't bad for me in the slightest sense. It helps keep me focused and alert."
Light groaned and turned back in his seat. His eyes couldn't help but to wander back to the detective's pile of sweets, sugar cubes, and treats. He was getting a cavity just looking at the pile of tooth decaying delectables. Sighing for probably the hundredth time today, he rolled his eyes and stared again at his own computer screen. Light was intent on keeping his eyes glued to the words in front of him, reading about the deaths of various criminals and businessmen. He would occasionally write a few notes on the papers scattered along his side of the desk.
The rattling of Ryuzaki's chain caught his attention, bringing his eyes from his work. Again. Light watched the elder detective slowly stir his tea. Long fingers held the spoon oddly, gripping with only his thumb and forefinger, only touching it just enough to use it. Yes, it was indeed odd. And yet, so fascinating. It seemed the more time he spent with L, the more interesting he became. It really was a strange relationship they had. Fighting one minute, and calm working the next.
And kissing the next. His mind resupplied.
Light's cheeks heated up at that. Where had that thought come from? 'Well, obviously from that unexpected kiss earlier,' he thought to himself. Why had Ryuzaki kissed him anyway? Or was it an accident? Thinking back, Light didn't see how it could have been that, it seemed to have a purpose. Perhaps the detective was just messing with him? Trying to get him to confess seemed a likely possibility. After all, that's what the earlier fight had been about. Ryuzaki was always looking to up his percentile of being Kira, and with the stress and lack of sleep, Light was on edge, easily enraged, and quick to fall into physical confrontation.
Sneaking another glance over at the raven-haired detective, Light nearly jumped to find he was being watched as well. The student quickly looked away, back to his work. Ryuzaki was staring at him as he took a sip of his tea. 'Talk about unnerving... ' Why did he have to watch him like that? And right now of all times. Geez, could he ever get a break around here? I mean really, was it so much to ask to work in peace? Especially after he kissed him like that!
You were staring first. Damn his own mind. Either way, he should still get some space after that man practically sexually harassed him.
You keep thinking about it like you liked it.
No. Oh no. He did not just think that. There was no way, no way in Hell that he actually liked being kissed by L. Not only was he is his 'friend,' his partner, rival, his enemy, he was also another man. And Light surely didn't think of him along any kind of unprofessional lines. Period.
Oh, so now you're a homophobe?
Light couldn't believe what he was thinking. His mind was too smart for its own good most of the time, but now, now he didn't know what to think. Of course he wasn't a homophobe. He feared nothing! Not imprisonment, not the great detective L, and not even his own feelings.
He feared nothing, absolutely nothing.
So prove it. Make a move. Make him see you aren't afraid.
Light mulled this over in his head.
Did L think him fearful, just because he had kissed him? Was it a challenge? Now that seemed a likely possibility, but how was kissing him a challenge? There wasn't much to come up with at that. Perhaps he wanted to find some flaw, some imperfection in Light? Maybe thinking that homophobia would be something he could use against him? 'No, that seems stupid; how could L use possible homophobia against me?'Okay, so he couldn't think of a viable motive at the moment. I didn't mean that Ryuzaki didn't have an ulterior motive.
So, what would Light do? Call L's bluff? Make a move himself? Ignore it and pretend nothing ever happened? 'Report him for sexual harassment,' he thought, thoroughly annoyed and confused with the situation. Well, since that last option wasn't even that, perhaps he should just ignore it? Ryuzaki hasn't said anything about it so far, nor has he made any sort of move since then. Maybe it really was just an accident.
Light sighed. All of this thinking was doing nothing but confusing him further. Not to mention giving him a headache. He reached for the water on the far side of his desk. Taking a drink, he continued to think about what L's possible motives were.
Was there something he could gain from this? Was there something he could use against me? Was it all really just an accident? Am I just over thinking everything? Is this some sort of test? How many other possibilities could there even be?!
Then something strange popped into his head. Quite possibly the strangest thought he could have ever had in his entire existence.
Was it real?
Light doubled over, coughing and choking on his water. The detective moved over to help him, patting his back to help dispel the water in his lungs. Amber eyes looked shocked, onyx looked concerned. Finally getting some air back into his lungs, Light gracefully plopped to his chair, still lightly coughing. All the while his mind was racing with possibilities.
Could that really be it? No, no there's no way. That's crazy. Oh, God, I'm going crazy. That's it, I'm insane. I shouldn't even be thinking anything like that. It's an impossibility.
Light looked up to see Ryuzaki still hunched and hovering over him. He had moved his hand from Light's back to his shoulder. He still looked concerned. But, anyone would looked concerned for a colleague's safety. So, why did he start thinking it meant something else? Why was he so unsure of his thoughts now?
It's impossible for it to be real. He was just having a short moment of strange insanity, right? None of this is real. He was just imagining it. Right? This isn't real, isn't it?
Isn't it?
