Chapter 3: L's Decision
L took a bite of his cream pie and continued observing the monitors. Every once in a while he felt his gaze wander to the smaller screen next to him. Finally he gave up, and moved his gaze to the live feed projected on the tiny screen.
The messy haired teenager was still sitting in the interrogation room, but now had put his feet up on the table. L smirked. Takagi Fujimaru... the boy was truly amusing. L had first encountered him as Falcon two years ago. The kid had the nerve to hack into his network, and succeeded! And it was all to prove that a classmate's brother was innocent of murder. He was impressed that he was able to hack the network, let alone get away with the information. L had researched Falcon after that, and discovered his identity. Rather than let his father or Third-i know, he kept it a secret. The kid was interesting and L was curious to see what he would do next.
Then a year ago, L was surprised when Fujimaru turned himself in to Third-i, in order to reveal a major terrorist plot. L was supposed to be assigned to the case, but Fujimaru's information proved to be more than suffice to place the leader in custody. L was a bit disappointed to see that Fujimaru had been banned from hacking anymore.
And yet here he was, sitting in the same interrogation room. When L had come up with the list of people to watch as potential Kira suspects, he wasn't surprised when the Takagi family came up. After all with Fujimaru's activities, he did seem like a potential suspect. But because the fact that Fujimaru was Falcon hadn't been put on record, he couldn't exactly hide the fact that they did fit the bill. The trust the police officers had in him was fragile enough already.
L was smart. Anyone could tell you that. He knew that with Falcon's talents, they would probably find Kira a lot faster. The question was, would the police force be willing to work with a high school student, no matter how talented he was, in order to find Kira. They were already uncomfortable about working with him and were still trying to get used to his habits. Bringing in a teenager could shatter that fragile trust they had in him. Yagami would most likely be the most outspoken about the issue, having two children of his own.
L considered working without Falcon's skill set. It would take much, much longer without the talents of the hacker. And who knows how many people would die? Besides, L smiled inwardly, wouldn't it be so much fun to see exactly how Falcon worked? He was still an enigma that L had yet to puzzle out. This posed the perfect opportunity. His mind made up, L settled back to wait.
Movement. That old guy had come into his room, the Third-I chief. L couldn't really remember his name. Sloppy, but he didn't exactly care. There was no audio but L knew what was being said. Fujimaru was being offered a deal; work with L to catch Kira and you won't go to prison.
"Watari," L called from his spot. The elder man came forward and L ordered, "We're going to be expecting another guest. Please order one of those new gamer computers and a flashdrive immediately... And we're almost out of sugar cubes."
