Kyle returned home a month after Lyra's birthday. The girl was excited to see her father after his absence, while her mother watched from the entryway. The tall and lean man set his daughter down, whispered something in her ear. Lyra scurried off and Kyle looked over at his wife.

"What's the matter Gretchen?" he inquired.

"There's something you should know Kyle," Gretchen returned, holding her gaze on him.

"Yes? What is it?" Kyle asked.

"Lyra's going to be a big sister," Gretchen's simple statement caused the man to blanch.

"What?"

"We've always discussed a second child."

"This cannot be happening," Kyle muttered.

"Why is that Kyle?" a bit of venom had slipped into his wife's voice.

"I won't be here for it, not like I was when Lyra was little," Kyle said quickly, too quickly for the Germanic woman's liking.

Gretchen held his gaze, and he could see that she did not believe him.

"We need to talk then," Kyle said with a sigh.

"Will it result in any sort of raised voices of angry words?" Gretchen inquired.

"Most likely," Kyle said, not meeting Gretchen's gaze.

"I'll call Adyson to come and pick Lyra up," Gretchen replied and turned around.

"Gretchen wait," Kyle tried.

"Kyle, I do not intend for our daughter to overhear any harsh words. I am not going to subject her to that. I will not allow you to subject her to that. We should discuss whatever this is in private, not in front of her," Gretchen snapped at him.

Gretchen made the call to her friend. Adyson had no problems picking up the short eleven-year old. Adyson assured Gretchen that Lyra would get to her soccer practice on time as she was on the same team as Elise. Adyson arrived within the hour and took Lyra and her soccer gear to her home. Once they were alone, Gretchen shot Kyle a look from where she sat in the den.

"Explanation, Now," her tone implied that she was not in the mood to be lied to.

"I made a very serious mistake Gretchen," Kyle said, not looking at her.

"What does she have on you?" she asked, and Kyle realized that the 'other' woman had followed through on her threat.

"She's married," Kyle grumbled.

"Kyle, you better tell me what the hell she has on you," Gretchen threatened.

"Do you remember that one night that I called you?" Kyle started.

"Which one?" Gretchen asked back.

"The one where I was incredibly inebriated," Kyle clarified.

"That was six months ago," Gretchen said.

"Well something happened…" Kyle started slowly.

Gretchen blinked then began to scowl.

"It's not what you think!" Kyle protested.

"Did you and this woman sleep together?" Gretchen asked point blank.

"No!" Kyle shouted.

"Then what 'serious mistake' are you talking about?" Gretchen shot at him.

Kyle knew she was going to hate him for what he was about to say next, "We drunkedly fooled around."

"Let me guess, she's pregnant," Gretchen replied coldly.

"Yes. But she doesn't know whose it belongs to," Kyle continued.

"What the hell does that mean?" Gretchen shot at him.

"She screwed her husband two days before then three other random guys," Kyle yelled, "She knew I was married!"

"Why didn't you say 'no' to the drinks Kyle? You know you get unhinged when you drink," Gretchen said icily.

"It would have been disrespectful to the hosts," Kyle muttered.

Gretchen's next five words felt like a sucker punch to him, "Kyle, I want a divorce."

"Gretchen, please, think about this. What's Lyra going to say?" Kyle tried pleading.

"You promised me that you would be faithful to me," Gretchen shot at him, "You sure as hell screwed that one up, in a very big way."

"What if it's not mine?" Kyle tried.

"You still broke our vows," Gretchen replied.

"What about this new one? How are you going to manage Lyra and it?" Kyle inquired.

"My boss is very understanding," Gretchen replied cooly.

"If-" Kyle was cut off.

"When," Gretchen corrected.

"We get a divorce, who would have custody over Lyra and the new baby?" Kyle asked.

"I'm not that heartless. You should know that. I would let you see them," Gretchen returned evenly.

"What are we going to tell Lyra?" Kyle asked.

"We're going to tell them what my Aunt and Uncle told my cousin when they got a divorce," Gretchen replied, and Kyle winced at the amount of venom she put into divorce.

"Which was?" Kyle inquired despite himself.

"That they still loved her and it wasn't her fault," Gretchen returned.

"Gretchen, how can I make it up to you?" Kyle asked.

"You can't Kyle. You just can't. You and I both know that we've been growing apart these last past couple of years," Gretchen replied with a sigh.

Kyle frowned. He knew she was right. He also knew she had resigned herself to the fact that the divorce was going to have had happened sooner or later.

"Are you going to keep the house or sell it for something smaller?" Kyle asked.

"Why would I put myself and Lyra through the stress of a move?" Gretchen snipped back at him.

"Do you want me to be there when this one is born?" Kyle inquired.

"I don't know right now," Gretchen snapped.

"I don't want that woman's child to be mine," Kyle mumbled.

"And if it is?" Gretchen asked.

"You know I would support it," Kyle replied.

Gretchen gave a slight nod.

"I will send support for Lyra and the baby," Kyle said, looking away.

"That won't be-" Gretchen started, her stubbornness taking over.

"They are my kids Gretchen. You're not going to be raising them alone. I wouldn't be too surprised if a couple guys have hit one you," Kyle cut her off.

"They have but I poured their drink down their shirts if they got too out of hand," Gretchen replied.

"I lost sight of what was important. I hope the next guy doesn't," Kyle stated sadly.

"I'm not looking to date or re-marry the second those papers are sign," Gretchen informed him.
