Chapter 23: Crash

Kurt and Blaine were leaving their shift at the diner when Kurt's phone rang. He looked at the Caller ID, not recognizing the number, but something told him to answer it. He picked up the phone. "Hello?"

"Hi, is this Kurt Hummel-Anderson?" the voice on the other end said. "You're listed as an emergency contact for both Finn and Rachel Hudson..."

"Yeah, that's me," Kurt said before realizing the second part of what this person had said. "Wait, what's wrong?"

"Well, I'm from Manhattan Hospital and I have them here after a car accident..." the voice began.

"What?" Kurt asked. What had happened to Finn and Rachel? "Are they okay?"

"Their pulses are normal and they're breathing," the hospital employee said. "We don't know very many details. If you want to come here..."

"Yeah, I'll be right there," Kurt said, starting to panic. Were Finn and Rachel okay? Was the baby okay? He turned to Blaine. "Blaine, our brother and sister-in-law were in a car accident..."

"What?" Blaine asked.

"Yeah," Kurt said, not knowing what to think. They were breathing and they had pulses... at least that was something... "We need to get a taxi to the hospital."

"Yeah," Blaine said. "What about the baby?"

"The hospital employee didn't say anything about the baby," Kurt said. "I don't know if they even knew that Rachel was pregnant..." He knew that Finn and Rachel were having disagreements with their parents about what to do after the baby arrived. What if something bad happened to the baby? That would make a difficult situation even worse.

Blaine hailed for a taxi as he and Kurt got in it. "Do you want me to call our other friends?" Blaine asked Kurt.

"Yeah," Kurt said. "I just hope that they're okay..." What if they had serious injuries? At least he knew that they were alive... he'd already lost his mom, he'd nearly lost his dad... he couldn't lose his brother and his sister-in-law too...

Kurt squeezed Blaine's hand as Blaine called their other friends in New York. The taxi pulled up in front of the hospital as Kurt and Blaine got out and ran inside. "Hi, I'm Kurt Hummel-Anderson," Kurt said. "I'm Finn Hudson's brother... this is my husband... where's Finn? Where's Rachel?"

The receptionist looked at Kurt. "Finn and Rachel are being examined by doctors right now. We can't let you in their rooms yet, but we'll let you know as soon as you can go see them."

Kurt started crying. "I want to see them."

"Hey, your brother and sister-in-law are going to be okay," the doctor said.

Blaine took Kurt's hand. "Let's go sit down."

"What if they're so hurt that they don't want me to see them?" Kurt asked.

"I'm sure they're just making sure they're okay," Blaine said, hugging Kurt as they sat down.

Kurt felt another worry creeping in. "The receptionist didn't say anything about the baby..."

"Maybe the receptionist didn't know that she was pregnant," Blaine said. "Kurt, you should really call your parents too... or have me do it..."

"You and I both know they aren't exactly getting along with our parents and with Rachel's dads lately," Kurt sighed.

"Kurt," Blaine interrupted. "Yes, they're having a disagreement with their parents. But they're still their parents. Parents deserve to know that their children are hurt."

"I guess you're right," Kurt said.

"Should I call them?" Blaine asked.

"I should," Kurt said. "My parents should hear from me, and her dads have known me longer."

"Okay," Blaine said.

Kurt picked up his phone and dialed his dad's number. He knew that his dad and Carole were in DC this week for congress sessions, so they'd probably be able to get to New York pretty fast. He hoped that his dad wasn't on the congress floor so he'd pick up faster. Sure enough, Burt picked up soon. "Hey Kurt."

"Dad, I need you and Carole to get to New York right away," Kurt said.

"Kurt, we have a big vote for health care today," Burt began.

"Finn and Rachel have been in a car accident," Kurt interrupted. "I know you guys were arguing with them when they were in Lima, but they're in the hospital and I don't even know what's wrong with them..."

"Oh my God," Burt interrupted. "What do you know? Do you know anything about the baby?"

At least Burt was asking about the baby. "I don't know anything about the baby," Kurt said. "I know that they're breathing okay, but I don't know what their injuries are. Can you and Carole just get here?"

"Yeah," Burt said. "I'll tell one of my staff members and we'll be on the next train to New York, okay?"

"Okay," Kurt said. "Thanks Dad." He hung up the phone and turned to Blaine. "My dad and Carole are coming to New York as soon as they can."

"Okay, call Rachel's dads now," Blaine said.

As Kurt dialed Rachel's dads' number, he saw Sam and Mercedes came in. Blaine motioned to Kurt to stay on the phone as Rachel's dad Hiram picked up the phone. "Hello?"

"Mr. Berry, this is Kurt," Kurt said.

"Hey, what's up?" Hiram asked.

"Rachel and Finn were in a car accident," Kurt said.

"What?" Hiram asked. "What's going on?"

"I don't know," Kurt said. "They won't let me see them..."

"I'll talk to LeRoy and see if we can get there," Hiram said, sounding worried.

"Good," Kurt said. "I'm sure Rachel would appreciate that."

When Kurt hung up the phone, he turned back to Blaine. "All the parents sounded concerned..."

"Of course they are, these are their kids," Blaine said.

"Yeah, but they haven't talked to them since the argument about what to do about the baby," Kurt sighed.

"Look, it's going to be okay," Blaine said.

Santana came in. "I called Rachel's mom. She'll be here soon."

"Good," Kurt said, glad he wouldn't have to make another call. Finally, Tina and Artie arrived, right before the doctor came over to the group.

"You're all here for Finn and Rachel Hudson?" the doctor asked.

"Yeah," Kurt said. "I'm Finn's brother, this is my husband and these are our cousins." He tried to say the first thing that came to mind so that if there were family only restrictions, the doctor would let their friends in.

"You don't all look alike," the doctor said, eyeing the group.

"I'm adopted," Tina said.

"Yeah, me too," Mercedes added.

"Okay," the doctor said. "The good news is that Finn and Rachel are both awake and conscious and in stable condition. They're asking for each other."

"Well, what happened to them?" Sam asked.

"They have some cuts and bruises, and they're sore," the doctor said. "They both have mild concussions, but they'll be fine. I don't know if you guys knew, but Rachel was pregnant and she lost the baby..."

The group exchanged sad looks. Rachel had lost the baby. They knew that both Finn and Rachel already felt a strong connection to this baby, and now the baby was gone? This was going to be hard on them, especially because they wanted to keep the baby and there had been disagreements with their parents about that.

"Do they know?" Tina asked.

"They don't know about the baby," the doctor said. "They were both asking about the baby... we told them we were still doing tests..."

"We're going to have to tell them," Santana said.

"Well, you guys can go see them," the doctor said.

The group looked at each other. "Well, Finn is my brother. How about I go see him with the guys, and the girls go see Rachel?"

"Okay," the doctor said.

The group followed the doctor to Finn and Rachel's rooms, no one wanting to break the news to them about their baby.

Finn rolled over in his hospital bed. Where was Rachel? Was she okay? Was the baby okay? The doctor had told Finn that he was okay. He had a mild concussion, and he was sore, but there were no lasting injuries... but what had happened to Rachel? What happened to the baby?

Kurt, Blaine, Sam and Artie came into Finn's room. "Hey you," Kurt said, coming to sit next to his brother. "How are you feeling?"

"Sore," Finn said. "It could have been worse."

"Where's Rachel?" Finn asked.

"The doctor said she's conscious too," Sam said. "I don't think her injuries are too serious."

Finn sighed with relief. "What about the baby?" They'd mentioned Rachel... but not the baby. What did this mean.

Finn saw his brother and his friends exchanging looks, and then he knew. The baby wasn't okay. "Finn, about the baby..." Kurt began.

Finn knew right away what this meant. He felt tears coming into his eyes. "We don't have a baby anymore..."

"I'm sorry Finn," Kurt said, giving his brother a hug.

Finn felt himself starting to cry. "I just really wanted this baby. I wanted Rachel and me and the baby to be a family..."

"I'm so, so sorry," Blaine repeated.

"If there's anything we can do..." Sam began.

"I feel so horrible," Finn sobbed. "I wanted the baby. I really did. I know we didn't make up our minds but we wanted to keep the baby so badly... and now the baby's gone. Life can be so unfair. I always wanted to have a baby with Rachel. I know this timing wasn't the best, but I just wanted to have a baby with her... we could have found a way to make things work, I know we could have made things work..."

"We're all going to be here for you," Artie said. "And Rachel."

"We're all so sad," Sam said, hugging Finn. "This shouldn't have happened to you guys..."

"No," Finn said. "It really shouldn't have."

The doctor hadn't said anything to Rachel about the baby.

The doctor had said that Finn was fine. She'd said that Finn was fine. But she didn't say anything about the baby.

She knew what that meant. The baby was not okay. If the baby was okay, the doctor would have told her. She'd lost her baby. She knew it.

Even though her parents wanted her to give up the baby, she'd loved the baby and felt a special connection with it. She'd been imagining her life with Finn and with the baby, and with future children they'd have... and now it had all come crashing down...

The door opened, and Santana, Mercedes and Tina came in. "Hey guys," Rachel said.

"Hey, are you feeling okay?" Mercedes asked.

"My baby's gone," Rachel said. She knew. She just knew.

"Did the doctor tell you?" Tina asked.

Now it was being confirmed. Rachel knew but she just wished that she would have found out that she was wrong. "The doctors didn't say anything, but I knew. It was my baby. I knew him or her... the doctor said that Finn was okay and that I was okay, but didn't say anything about the baby... so I knew that the baby was gone..."

"Rachel..." Mercedes began.

Rachel started crying as the girls came over to hug her. "What's Finn going to say?"

"The guys are with him," Santana said.

"Why did that car hit us?" Rachel asked. "It almost feels like it was the world's way of telling us we weren't meant to have this baby... I mean our parents were so opposed to us keeping the baby and now we lose the baby..."

"Rachel, don't think like that," Santana said. "It was bad luck... you and Finn should have gotten to keep the baby and raise it. Your parents would have come around eventually..."

"You really think that?" Rachel asked.

"Of course," Santana said. "It's you and Finn."

"You shouldn't blame yourself," Mercedes said. "This was not your fault, or Finn's. It was that stupid driver who was driving too fast..."

"Yeah," Rachel sighed. "Where's Finn?"

"The guys are with him," Tina said. "Santana called your mom, and Kurt called your dads... they'll be here as soon as they can..."

"What are my dads going to think?" Rachel asked. "And what are Finn's parents going to think? They didn't want me and Finn to keep the baby and now we can't..."

"Don't worry," Santana said. "They're your parents. They love you..."

"Okay," Rachel said. She didn't know what else to say.

Burt and Carole came into Finn's room. Finn wasn't sure if he was up to seeing his parents. His friends had been comforting him, but they'd been supportive from the beginning. His parents hadn't been completely supportive. What were they going to say?

Finn looked up at his parents. "Hi."

"Hi honey," Carole said. "I'm so glad you and Rachel are okay..."

Finn didn't know what to say. Not everyone was okay.

"Finn, we know you're not happy with us right now," Burt said. "But you are our son and we wanted to see you... and we're so, so sorry about your baby..."

"Maybe we weren't meant to have a baby right now..." Finn began. "You didn't want us to keep the baby and then we got hit..."

"Don't talk that way Finn," Carole said, sitting by her son's bed. "Are you okay?"

"I want my child," Finn said. "I really wanted this baby..."

"Are you still sore?" Carole asked.

"It hurts," Finn said. "I just want to see Rachel..." He was upset, but he hadn't been the one the baby had been inside. He wanted Rachel with him so he could be there for her, and she could be there for him.

"I'm sure she can come see you soon," Burt said. "Finn, I'm sorry if we upset you."

"It doesn't matter now, our baby is gone," Finn said. He appreciated having his parents care about him, but at the same time, he was feeling a little upset with them. They hadn't wanted him and Rachel to keep the baby and now they weren't going to have any other options. His parents were being sympathetic, but he didn't know what they really thought. What was he supposed to say?

Rachel had just finished crying when her phone rang. She looked at the Caller ID and saw that it was her dads. "Hello?" She wasn't even sure if she wanted to talk to them right now. What were they going to say?

"Baby, we're getting on a plane to New York," LeRoy said.

"Okay," Rachel said. What were her dads going to do? Lecture her about how this was for the better so she could pursue her dreams and that she and Finn weren't ready?

"Are you okay baby?" Hiram asked.

"I don't have any serious injuries," Rachel said. "Just lost the baby..."

"We know you and Finn loved that baby..." Hiram said.

"Yeah, we did," Rachel said. They did, even though their parents hadn't wanted them to.

"Well, we'll see you in a few hours," LeRoy said.

"Yeah," Rachel said as she hung up the phone. A few moments later, the doctor came in. "Hi, how's Finn?" Rachel asked the doctor.

"Finn's okay," the doctor said. "I was actually wondering if you'd like to see him. Since you're still recovering from everything, you'll need to be wheeled into his room, but..."

"Yeah," Rachel said. "I'd like to see him." At least she could be with Finn now. The doctor helped her into the wheelchair and wheeled her down the hall. Rachel began feeling a little nervous when they arrived at Finn's room, noticing that Burt and Carole were there. What were they going to say to her? But when she saw Finn in the bed and how sad he looked, nothing else mattered. She wheeled up to him. "Finn..."

Finn looked at her. "Rachel..."

Rachel put her arms around him. "Finn... our baby..." She started crying.

"Yeah," Finn said. "I just want our baby back."

"Me too," Rachel said. "I'm glad you're okay though."

"Yeah," Finn said. "I'm glad you're okay too."

Neither of them had much to say right now. But at least they could be with each other.
