He watched her through the thicket, how she wandered aimlessly all over the dark brown path. It was getting dark, and he was getting hungry, and those little plump cheeks of hers looked so mouthwatering under the red cape that it took all he could not to jump out of the wood and devour her whole. Her straight black hair hung like waves out of the hood.
He could hear her singing softly. She wasn't very good, of course, but it was adorable in some way, and he was reminded of a little chubby bird. She twirled in a circle around herself every once in a while, obviously quite proud of her cloak, and the way it captured the light of the sunset and the oncoming moonlight that was already beginning to peak out behind the ominous clouds. He shook himself awake. Her little voice was like a lullaby sung by a doll. The echo of crickets began to sing back to her. She was a princess, but she was walking into a very dangerous land. He slunk along after her, his feet padding softly. The sky was no longer a splash of colour, and the trees were no longer a verdant green hue. Everything turned gray and black and white except for the little girl's cape and hood. Sometimes you could glimpse a bit of emerald, which he assumed was her eyes under the hood.
He was now too hungry to bear it, and moved out of the thicket to cross her path. She looked at him with childish curiosity. He nodded a sly greeting. She smiled, two little buck teeth peaking out of her lips.
As he moved closer and closer, his smile grew wider, and he licked his lips.
She opened her mouth wide, and grinned like a witch, showing off her rows and rows of sharp, pointed teeth, an evil glint in her green eyes.
"I'm not scared," she said sweetly.
