The following week brought nothing new for the Bennet girls except for one.
Lizzie would eye her older sister texting on their shared phone for hours on end. At first she didn't care so much, but after the third day she was getting a little curious about who her sister was spending so much time calling and texting. Her mom on occasion would ask this question, but Jane would only dismiss it and say she was talking to a friend from school.
When it was time for bed Lizzie decided to get to the bottom of it.
"Okay, spill." she said, jumping on her sister's bed.
"What do you mean?"
"No one for a second believes that you're spending so much time talking to someone from school. Well unless it's a guy from school, then it would make since."
"If you must know it's Charles."
"Who?" Lizzie scrunched her nose.
"Charles, from the museum field trip."
"Jane, you can't seriously be talking to that guy still. Haven't you heard that long distance relationships don't work, especially if you're starting out with dating from a distance. It'll screw the rest of the relationship when you two are actually together."
"Lizzie, we aren't dating, it's only at a friendship level right now."
"Funny, I never seen you talk to any of your friends that long before. How long was that last call? Two hours?"
"Okay fine, he's really funny though and we have a lot in common."
Lizzie gave her sister a hug, "As long as you don't jump too quickly into a relationship then I'm fine with it. The last thing I want is to pick up the pieces of your broken heart. Boys can be cruel."
"I will." Jane reassured.
After pulling out of the embrace Jane started to bounce on her bed, "So I got some news."
"I feel like I'm going to regret saying this but what is it?"
"Charles asked me out on a date!" Lizzie frowned, not liking this piece of information at all.
"Did you not hear what I said about being careful?
"Excuse me, you didn't let me finish." Lizzie nodded for her to continue, "Since I am a little nervous about going all by myself and knowing that dad probably wouldn't like it either. I asked him if I could bring someone along."
"That's good at least." Jane bit her lip still looking at Lizzie, "To hell if you think I'm going to be some third wheel. I love you sis, but after being with you guys at the museum for five minutes was enough to show me that it would just be gushy and lovey dovey. No thank you."
"Oh come on. You're the only one who knows about Charles besides Charlotte and I don't want to leave her feeling awkward if she came."
"And it wouldn't be for me why?"
"Because I know you could laugh yourself out of awkward situations and find plenty of things to entertain you. Besides you can do your people watching while we're on the date."
"Where is this date taking place at?"
Jane jumped up on her bed and stood with one foot on the footboard frame, "Millenium Park; The only sensible place for a date."
Lizzie crossed her arms over her chest, a smile playing at the corners of her mouth, "Are you seriously trying to quote Sherlock Holmes the movie?"
"Hell yeah!"
After being told that they were attending a concert, Lizzie now had the problem of trying to look half decent.
When Jane revealed that she was wearing a dress, her younger sister felt that wearing a nice shirt, jeans and chucks would probably not fly especially after she was told that his friend would be coming along.
Now dressed in a navy blue dress and roman sandals, Lizzie could help but ask her sister the same question again, "Why does he have to come along?"
"Charles figured that it would be better that you weren't the third wheel and invited his friend to keep you company."
If that was the case why did she have to go at all if they were going to make this 'date' anymore uncomfortable. But leaving her sister with two strange boys was not something she wasn't something she was willing to do either. At school, they were learning self defense, and since her sister was in band, she didn't have to take the class because it was considered a PE class.
No, it was all up to Lizzie, blue belt master of the arts of tae kwon do. She was so busy looking at her game face that she almost didn't hear the sound of the doorbell.
Jane asked her to go ahead of her and tell them that she'd be out in a bit.
Lizzie pulled up hair into a high ponytail that still managed to have hair almost touching the small of her back.
Unfortunately she wasn't the first to react to the sound of the door. Her mother practically bolted to the entrance and Lizzie was too embarrassed to actually go to the door after hearing her mom swing the door open and gush over the person standing there.
Instead she quickly grabbed her small purse, ipod, and earphones before finally making her way to the door. By then her mom had stopped yelling for Jane to hurry. An arm blocked her from leaving and saw that her mom was eyeing her suspiciously.
"Where do you think you're going Lizzie?" Her mom barked.
Lizzie saw that it was Will standing outside and she could only manage to blush slightly before stating that she was going with Jane on the date.
"I don't see why you have to go. I'm sure they would like to spend time alone, isn't that right?" The blush only spread as she saw that Will was mistaken for Charles. He'd seemed to be trying to not listen to their conversation, but missed what was directed at him. Lizzie decided to save what face she had left and fix the mix up, "Mom, this isn't Charles. That's his friend."
"Oh, ohhhh. Well then of course you should go."
Already knowing full well what her mother was thinking, she just rushed out the house as fast as she could. Jane now ready, followed behind with Will.
Hopping into the backseat behind the passenger, Lizzie was hoping that both boys would sit in the front so that she could sit with her sister.
To her dismay and utter annoyance, she saw Will open the front passenger door for Jane and sat himself behind Charles.
She almost felt as if they had some time of 'bro code' that said 'help a bro spend as much time with girl A, while you take care of girl B', talk about wingmanning and divide and conquer. Sucks for them, Lizzie had other plans if they were trying to win the favor of the sister.
Lizzie popped her earplugs in and scrolled through her audio books till she found the Hobbit and began to play it. She looked out her window and rest her head against the door, getting lost in Tolkein's worlds. After hearing this for the hundredth time by now, she was well on her way to memorizing.
"What are you listening to?"
It was Will and it seemed like he'd been watching her for sometime. There wasn't much else to listen to besides listening to Jane and Charles' conversation.
Pulling one of her earpieces out to make sure she wasn't yelling she gave what was a short and sweet answer, "The Hobbit on audio" If you must know. "I would read them, but this way it's easier to avoid conversation."
Before she could replace the earpiece back he responded.
"Is that what you're doing now?" Duh.
Instead she said with a pointed look and a raised eyebrow, "I only figured I'd bring it so I won't have to go a whole car ride in silence. Or did you now want to talk with me?" Please say no.
"No," Yes! "but I figure to make the other part of our party happy, we should say something every now and then." Crap!
Well if he wanted to be all Mr Sociable he could start first. Lizzie waited for a while and then looked around the car before looking back at him and raising her eyebrows.
He frowned, but took the hint, "So are you into art?"
Oh gosh, not one of those socially awkward people who brings up boring things like art and weather. Great conversation starter there Darcy!
After allowing herself a laugh she said yes, "What about you?"
Will announced that he too liked art and then the conversation died.
Lizzie knew it would, she'd set it up so that he couldn't do anything but to say yes or no. Neither would allow him to keep going if he was horrible at small talk as Lizzie had guessed.
To her great disappointment he decided to ask another question. Apparently at the bottom of the barrel too.
"So what grade are you?"
"Junior." and then after several pauses, "What about you? A senior, right?"
This was the only bone she was throwing him.
She wasn't about to go into some deep conversation with this guy. After all, she was here for Jane. As far as she knew, he was supposed to be entertaining Lizzie, and she knew that he wasn't really the entertaining type.
Will looked surprised that she didn't let the subject die off like the last one, "Yes." a pause, "Do you do anything outside of school?"
"Run cross country, read, hang out with my friend, and if I don't have anything thing going on after that, then I go on double dates with hot rich boys. In fact the last one is a hobby of mine." She said with a big smile. Truthfully, she could've said more like she did tae kwon do, but something always prevented her from saying that to anyone, better to not let your opponent know about your strengths, and your weaknesses.
She decided to throw the question back at him.
"What about you then? Do you have classes for sticking your nose in the air?"
Will frowned and only answered in the negative and began to look out his window. Lizzie couldn't understand how he could've taken offence to a little jab. Especially after she had teased him about this being a 'double date'.
Figuring that he was just another weird guy, Lizzie went back to her story.
A/N: So yes I am breaking up some of these chapters and it's because I think I may have more time to finish writing them if they're shorter.
So off on their date! Lizzie has some issues over trusting boys besides Will. Stay tuned for her side of the date...
You guy's seemed to have grown quiet so at first I didn't know if I should even keep writing this. Reviews motivate the writers!
