I am alive. Apparently. I was looking at the views for my story only to see that I lost about 1000 viewers at some point. Is that because people aren't reading Maximum Ride fanfiction that much since the book series ended? Or is it because I suck at updating and people are sick of it? Because I know I suck at updating. I am aware. And I know it must annoy you all because I know it would annoy me. But anyway, it's time for the next chapter. Finally.
Disclaimer: I do not own Maximum Ride of any of its characters. I also do not own any songs use. The idea for this story came from Nadine. And this is purely a work of fanfiction and I am not doing this for any reason other than it's fun. I also don't own the bird facts they belong to .com. Also I don't own Google.
Last time in Chapter 11:
Jeb wasn't there when Max woke up. Where is he? Fang talked to Iggy to find out what weird stuff Max has been doing lately. Max and Fang were partnered up for their science projects. How is this going to go?
Chapter 12: Bird Facts and Apologies. A.K.A: Things I Don't Care About.
MAX P.O.V:
"The life cycle of birds?" I look over at Fang and quickly look away. No. I can't look at the face of the person who said that they still care about me and don't want me to get hurt when they hurt me themselves and clearly don't care about me at all. I can't look into the lying face of my ex-best friend. It hurts. Which isn't fair. I didn't deserve to be hurting. What did I do to deserve this?
"Yea, why not? Birds are interesting. And it's not like we have any other ideas." I shrug. I can't help but think that it should be me talking and him silently sitting here. That's how it's supposed to be. I guess things changed a little bit more than anyone thought they would.
We were half way through the lesson and Fang had his laptop out and was looking up random bird facts. "Did you know that over 1000 birds a year die from smashing into windows?" I looked over at him. "What?" He nods and points to where the fact is neatly typed onto a website. Stupid birds. The poor things never even knew it was coming. I write down the fact and peer at the laptop screen over his shoulder. We continue our search throughout the lesson.
Bird Facts:
Over 1000 birds a year die from smashing into windows.
Owls are one of the only birds who can see the colour blue.
An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain.
Penguins can jump as high as six feet in the air.
A humming bird ways less than a penny.
Flamingos can only eat with their heads upside down.
"Why did we name ourselves the flock? Now every time we go and eat somewhere I'm gonna be picturing everyone eating with their head upside down." I pulled a face and Fang chuckled. "We need to start typing these up." I said taking the laptop and putting it in front of me so I could type. I was searching through images on Google trying to find one on a bird life cycle, you know: egg – baby bird – bird – bird with other bird in nest – mama bird with eggs. That kind of thing.
"Max?" I didn't even glance away from the screen. "Yea?" I heard Fang breathe deeply. Like he was trying to calm himself. I looked over at him, lifting my hands from the laptop and putting them down on the desk. "What?" He looked up and met my eyes with his. His dark eyes that you could so easily get lost in. Wait, what? Oh no. I cannot let myself think that way. I won't. "I'm sorry. I know you don't believe me or care but You should still know." I looked back at the screen. "What are you sorry for?" He breathed deeply again. "For everything. Bringing Lissa to the bench, saying all of those mean things to you, leaving you crying in that utility closet. And for not being there when you needed me. All of it." Wow. Emotional Fang. "You're right. I don't believe you." The bell rang and I stood up and walked out of the class, leaving Fang and his laptop behind.
FANG P.O.V:
I sat there and watched her walk away. I know, I know; I should have followed her. I should have been there for her. I should have been the friend she deserves. I should have been a lot of things. But I wasn't. I can't change the past and I don't know what to do in the present. I want to help her, I really do. I just don't know how.
I had just put my laptop away and was just about to leave when I noticed Gazzy walking down the hall. I ran to catch up with him. "Gazzy wait!" I called out. He looked back at me confused.
"What do you want Fang?" He sounded guarded. I freaked me out a little. I evn managed to push him away? Would any of them ever trust me again?
"I want to help the flock. No, I want to help Max." He rolled his eyes.
"I think you've helped her enough." He went to walk away but I grabbed his shoulder, keeping him in place. "She is in trouble. She is in trouble and she won't let me help her."
MAX P.O.V:
The flock and I were looking for Gazzy. Iggy told me that he stopped at his locker and told him to go ahead to us on the way to the cafeteria. And now we can't find him. He didn't show up and he wasn't at his locker. Or replying to any of our texts. DING, DING, DING, DING, DING, DING, DING- "OMG Max get a new ringtone!" Nudge screamed. "Can't," I replied checking my pone. It was Gazzy. "It's the only thing annoying enough to motivate me to check it. And Gazzy says he's outside my science class. What is he doing there?"
We walked around the corner to the hallway that houses my science class and I froze. I was staring open mouthed in front of me at Gazzy and Fang deep in conversation. "Please tell me I'm seeing things."I pleaded to whoever would listen. Gazzy looked over at me, then at Fang, then at me, then at Fang. Then he walked over to me and said "hi." I looked over and glared at Fang. He met my gaze evenly. Not even flinching. "Is there a problem here?" I asked fighting to keep my voice calm. I was angry, yea. Of course. I did not want Fang to get Gazzy on his side. He didn't deserve him.
"Not at all," Fang answered. "Gazzy was just helping me with something."
Then my phone went off again. Looking down at it I saw that the ringer was Jeb. Jeb only rings me when he's pissed off about something and wants me to come home as a punching bag. But usually he will text if I don't answer. I didn't. He rang again. And again. What was going on?
It's probably not long enough, especially after that massive gap between updates. I'm not spending as much time on fanfiction anymore. That might have something to do with the lack of updates but I'm not going to keep making excuses for my laziness. But I do feel bad about not updating. Hopefully I update sooner than usual.
