First Climax
"Close the door! Close the door!" Sam yelled as she ran inside of the safe room. Tyrone heaved the door shut as Jack started heaving a nearby shelving unit in front of the door. It was extraordinarily heavy and Tyrone had to help him move it. Hopefully they would be gone by the time anything got past it. If anything could get past it.
Tyrone, with a shortness of breath from running, approached Sam as she leaned against the wall trying to regain her own breath. "How you holding up Sam?" He almost regretted his decision to ask.
"How am I doing?" Sam was both irritated and terrified. "I just got half strangled by a giant tongue. And not for the first time mind you. This day is just going great." Sam then looked down at herself and tried to wipe of a thin film of slime that had remained after she pulled herself free from that, what was it called again? "Friggen' smokers. Gaghe."
Tyrone was determined to turn this opportunity into a 'Who was having the worst day' competition. "I know for a fact that you didn't get hit by a charger yet. I'm just surprised my ribs aren't broken from that." Tyrone touched his chest in the spot he had been hit out of habit from experience of heavy hits on the ball field.
Sam chuckled. "I've had worse." She stated through deeper breaths.
"Really?" Tyrone was more shocked than he should have been.
"Well," Sam had finally caught her breath, "I didn't exactly work on the legal side of the law. Having to pull a bullet out of your shoulder, with a broken arm, feels a lot worse than a broken rib."
Tyrone took a step back out of admiration and smiled slightly. "By the time this is over I think I'll know what that's like."
"I'm just glad that whatever it was that was trying to smash our door in this morning hasn't caught up to us yet."
"When you two are done over there, think you can help me over here?" Jack sat on the table in the middle of the room as he held onto his side, his gun lying on the floor nearby.
"Right, sorry." Sam quickly went over to him and started assist him. "That one was one of the worst infected I think we've seen yet."
"I've had worse." He looked up at Sam, and gave smug smile. Sam just returned the look and continued to help him. "How many med kits are in here?"
Tyrone closed a nearby med station on the other side of the room with a med kit in each hand. "This is all I could find." Tyrone tossed one of them to Sam and she went to work on patching up Jack. "I'll hang on to this one. That will bring us up to three. You still have those pills right?"
"I have them." Sam rose from her position and shook the bottle in her hand. "Jack gave them to me before I found that med kit on the zombie. I'll give them to Dillon to make up for his lack of a med kit." Sam looked around for him but didn't find a trace of him. "Speaking of which, where is the little bugger?"
"He didn't run out already again did he?" Tyrone sounded agitated as he made his way over to the other room now recovered mostly from his injuries. He spied Dillon who had wandered over into the room and was working on something on the table. He was so focused on what he was doing that he didn't seem to notice Tyrone come up behind him. Tyrone peered over his shoulder to see what he was doing. Dillon was tinkering with some of the junk he had bothered to pick up. Tyrone would bother to argue that he had almost gotten killed for it.
"Can you move to the left a little? You're blocking my light." Dillon didn't bother to look over at who it was.
Tyrone obliged and asked "The hell are you doing?" Dillon grabbed something on the table next to him and handed it to Tyrone. Tyrone took the object and Dillon went back to his project. The object was some type of pipe. But was so strange about it to Tyrone was the wires and electronics wrapped around it. Out of curiosity, Tyrone hit the switch that was on it and the light attached to t blinked on with a shrill noise.
Dillon spun around with amazing speed and snatched the device back from Tyrone. Dillon switched the device off. He had an extremely agitated face when he addressed Tyrone. "Are you MAD?" He practically shouted.
Tyrone, trying to defend himself, backed away with raised hands. "It was just a light. What's so bad about that?"
"Wait for it…" Dillon held up his finger in an annoyed fashion. In the distance yelling was heard from some of the infected that the group had learned to fear. Tyrone held a slightly confused look on his face as a few moments later a half dozen infected gathered at the exit door and reached in to attack what was inside.
"That is what is so bad about it." Dillon put his finger down and pointed his device at the group of infected. "In case you haven't noticed, those things are attracted to loud noises." Dillon turned around and begun working on more of the devices.
"Okay. So what, is this just a simple distraction device while we shoot them to bits?" Tyrone noticed the other two come into the room and shoot the infected trying to get inside. Sam handed Tyrone his gun as Jack scanned outside.
"Of course not," Dillon responded. He turned around with a similar looking device in hand and tossed it to Tyrone. "It's a pipe bomb." The new device had a fuse sticking out of the top and was much heavier than the first one.
Tyrone looked at the device he now held in his hand. A sense of shock came into his mind. A volatile device was now in his hand. Thankfully Jack brought Tyrone to the present before he could from a complete thought.
"How on earth did you manage to but this thing together?" Sam grabbed the device from Tyrone and brought it up to her face as if to inspect the craftsmanship.
Dillon shrugged as he worked. "You find some spare things lying around and you get ideas. Besides," He turned around and presented a second completed pipe bomb, "I wasn't the first one to have this idea. I heard about similar devices on the radio."
Sam was suppressed. "And when were you listening to the radio? I've never seen you listening to that thing."
Dillon shrugged. "I listened to it at night on low when I couldn't sleep." Dillon tossed the one in his hand to Jack and he caught it with ease.
"Not the best looking thing I've seen," He spoke as he examined it. "But it'll get the job done. Nice work kid." And he tossed it back. "Looking forward to see what else you can come up with."
"Looks like you've got a fan." Tyrone interjected. "Best not to disappoint." He then moved to the door scanned around as Jack had previously. "Looks like it's clear right now. I say we move while we still can. I think the gate control is somewhere around here."
"Sound good. Who wants this other pipe bomb?" Dillon refilled his ammo from the pile lying on a nearby table and left the other pipe nearby.
Sam grabbed it as she refilled her ammo as well. It was surprising the shear amount of ammo that the group had found lying around the compound. The guns were also lying around and in cabinets, none of it locked up. Almost every door was unlocked, and behind it more infected. It was very eerie how insecure the entire facility was. But no one was complaining.
Jack opened the door slowly and took another look. No infected in the immediate area. Everyone moved as a group as they crossed the yard. One of many yards that was crossed. The complex that they were in was mainly composed of two building. One on either side with a long open area in between the two. They yard was sectioned off with many barbed fences causing the group to weave in and out of both buildings. Everyone agreed that going through the compound would be better than finding a way around it with Jack's truck.
Tyrone led the way outside and over the small pile of bodies that had gathered at the door. With no infected in sight, they quickly worked their way to the other side. Tyrone held the door for everyone as they filed into the building. He was about to close it when he saw Dillon standing in the middle of the yard looking through the fences in the direction of the truck.
"Dillon!" Tyrone shouted at him from the door. Dillon raised his head at the noise but made no indication of moving. "Get your butt in here or we'll leave you behind."
Dillon didn't move or say anything for several moments, but when Tyrone was going to close the door Dillon started moving towards the door. He was still staring but he slowly turned his head and quickened his pace.
"You okay man?" Tyrone asked as the two made it into the building and the door was closed behind them.
Dillon had a somber look on his face. "Ya I just," he shook his head, "that thing that was attacking us when we started hasn't caught up to us yet. You would think with all the noise we are creating that it would have found us by now. Right?"
"I don't know, and I don't care." Was Tyrone's response, much to the disappointment of Dillon. "I'm going to take every blessing we can get, and that includes not being eaten alive by hundreds of people." With that Tyron walked off to find the others leaving Dillon shaking his head.
After Dillon had caught up to the rest of the group they were in a small room with lots of screen and buttons. Many of the cameras were showing nothing but static and the rest were documented the path in which they had taken to reach this point.
"This looks important." Sam said as she scanned the room. She looked over the main panel of switches for something that would help them while the others looked over the screens.
After a few short moments just looking, Sam got flustered. None of it was labeled as to its function. With a furrow in her brow, Sam decided to start testing things. "I haven't gotten this far by not pushing buttons."
She went for one of the larger ones when someone caught her hand. "Wait!" It was Dillon and he had a look of dread on his face.
"What's got your knickers in a twist?" Sam questioned annoyed as she withdrew her hand from the console.
"This is the part of the movie where all of the alarms start going off."
Sam dismissed him with a snort and a wave of the hand. "You're just being paranoid. It'll be fine." Dillon just shook his head and watched as Sam proceeded to push several buttons. After about a minute of this something appeared on the main screen.
"Gate override activated." Dillon Read off the screen as it came up. "Enter security clearance code. Fantastic." He added sarcastically. "How on earth are we going to get these open now?"
"Idea!" Sam shouted as she raised her weapon. Dillon knew what this idea was and immediately stepped back just in time as Sam opened fire on the console.
"Damnit Sam!" Tyrone shouted after the sparks had died down. "Now what are we supposed to do?"
Sam pointed to the screens that were still running. They all looked as all the gates were slowly starting to open. "You'd be surprised how often something like that works." Sam was caught off guard when a loud siren started going off. "You would also be surprised at how often that happens as well." Tyrone glared at Sam.
"So good news - bad news." Dillon stammered out as he rushed across the room. "Point is we need to move now before we die."
Jack moved to join Dillon at the door. "If what happened at the last safe room is any indication on how these bastards react to noise, I guess every blood thirsty infected in a five mile radius knows our exact location."
It took Sam and Tyrone a few quick moments to react. "Agreed" Sam said quickly as she and Tyrone rushed outside to be greeted by gunfire. Dillon and Jack were already dealing with the local infected. Sam and Tyrone soon added their own gunfire into the mix of lead and blood. They waited for a slight reprieve in the waves of infected as before they started to make their way through the compound towards their escape.
When the break they were looking for arrived, they rushed down as far as they could before they were forced to take up defensive stances once more. Dillon and Jack were guarding the front while Sam and Tyrone were watching the rear. Unfortunately, no one was guarding the sides. In the heat of the moment everyone forgot just how versatile the Common infected were. A small group of them came over a roof top and ran straight at the group of survivors. Luckily for them however, the infected like making lots of noise.
Dillon noticed them at the last moment as the closest one tackled him. His scream of fright brought Tyrone out of his firing trance and immediately turned and fired in the direction of Dillon. He took out three of the infected before running up to Dillon and bashed the remaining one that was currently assaulting him. A quick burst of fire brought the infected to the ground.
"Thanks." Dillon shouted as he brought himself up.
Tyrone coved Dillon as he recovered his footing. "Let's keep mov- argh!" Tyrone was cut off as an annoying little infected jumped onto his back. "This is not a free ride!" Tyrone shouted as the jockey started to 'steer' Tyrone away from the group.
Dillon saw this and rushed over to Tyrone with wrench in hand. He swung at the growth on Tyrone's back, striking it and knocking it off with a shrill scream of pain. Dillon wasted no time as he swung again and again killing the jockey as it slumped to the ground. "Friggen' head-humpers." Dillon mumbeled to himself as he and Tyrone made their way over to the others.
"We're getting nowhere real fast!" Sam yelled as she mowed down another small group of infected. "How about we see if that new toy of yours really works!"
Dillon wasted no time and took the small device in question out from his belt. He quickly lit it be firing at the fuse and threw it as far as he could. Everyone watched as the device flew through the air with what appeared to be a red streak. Following behind were the infected drawn to the loud beeping and bright red light attached to the bomb.
Nobody wanted to stick around for when the fuse ran out. They all ran for the entrance as the surrounding infected rushed towards the infernal noise. The group as the group of survivors approached a turn in the yard, Dillon gave a quick look over his shoulder to see the device go off in a bloody mess of limbs and bodies. A few of the parts landed just behind them and on the adjacent roof top as they continued to run, the infected returning their attention to the intruders.
"Christ, how much did you put in that thing?" Jack shouted to Dillon as they continued to run.
Dillon shrugged quickly as if to shrug the question off. "Enough." He stated.
A few more infected appeared out of one of the door ways they had taken in crossing the compound. They were made quick work of. As they continued to run, a roar could be head very close by further on ahead. They were about halfway there when the unthinkable happened. This caused everyone to hesitate and slow down. "What the hell was that?" Jack questioned as he raised his rifle.
"Something big." Sam replied, concern evident in her voice. "Something very big, and very close."
With the alarm still going off they couldn't afford to take slow down, so they kept a slow jog going as they made their way toward the truck. It was at this point that Tyrone caught a glimpse of something moving on a nearby roof. Thinking it to be a charger, he open fired on it hoping to take it down before it got too close. The special infected in question gave out another roar as it came rushing towards the source of its pain.
Only when it jumped off the roof did Tyrone see what it truly was. A hulking wall of meat and muscle on two legs.
"Why did you anger the meat gorilla?" Dillon shouted as he saw the beast of an infected slam into the ground.
"Shut up and shoot it!" Jack stated sternly. He could tell that this was the thing that they saw at their starting area. It was going to take a lot of fire power to bring this thing down.
The monstrosity made a strait at his provoker. Having been in this situation before, Tyrone quickly dodged out of its way as it swung one of its massive arms at him. It made a quick turn and continued its pursuit. Everyone opened fire on it as they rushed towards escape faster than before.
"I'm dry over here!" Sam shouted as she noticed she only hadn't any clips left.
Dillon had an idea. "Take mine!" Dillon demanded as he tossed his primary over to Sam. She caught it with ease and continued to open fire as she ran. Dillon on the other hand, took a quick turn and took cover behind an overturned vehicle. He didn't have to wait long before the Tank rushed by and Dillon sprang into action. It was time for Dillon to become the chaser.
Tyrone saw this taking place and knew exactly how this was going to end. "Dillon NO!" Dillon raised his ax and took a swing at the Tank. He managed to hit the Tank in the back of the arm and the Tank roared out in pain. Dillon managed to get a second swing in at its tiny legs. He struck just as the Tank spun around with its meaty arms and sending Dillon flying across the yard.
"Damnit! Dillon's down!" Tyrone was both livid and scared for Dillon. Despite the danger Tyrone ran towards his downed companion. Dillon's plan had worked however. The Tank was now limping at almost half speed but now with twice the anger than before. Thinking quick, Tyrone picked up Dillon's dropped ax and hurled it at the Tank. It struck it in the back and sent the Tank into another fit of rage.
Refocusing its anger, it charged after Tyrone. "Jack! Get Dillon to the Truck while I take care of this!"
Jack didn't need to be told twice. Sam chased after Tyrone as he fled as it wasn't safe to go on your own.
Jack blasted the few infected that had braved the Tank. "How bad is it?" Jack stood over Dillon as he picked himself up to find out where it hurt.
"I'm never doing that again." Dillon said as he took Jacks hand and steadied himself.
"Good. What the hell where you thinking doing that?"
"I was thinking it would collapse and we could get away while it got up."
"Well it half worked. It's limping after Tyrone right now as I get you out of here. Sam chased after it as well."
"Shit. We need to go after them."
"Not in your condition. Now let's get you out of here before you decide to play hero again."
"Agreed." Dillon reached down and retrieved the bottle he had shoved into his pocket. "Thanks for the pain pills." He hissed as he opened the container and poured the contents into his mouth. "This should hold me over until I can patch myself up. But I'm going to make it if I don't have a weapon."
"Take my side." Jack said as he handed Dillon the D'Eagle he had found.
"Thanks, now let's get out of here."
Meanwhile Tyrone had lead the Tank into a supply building they had come through earlier. He had managed to squeeze between some boxes and was holding reloading. 'What in the Hell was I thinking?' He thought as he heard the Tank rage about in the building. It was breaking boxes and tossing everything it could get its hand on.
Through the ruckus that was going on around him, Tyrone heard something slightly more terrifying. A gurgling noise. A sound you would expect to hear from someone about to vomit. Or rather what was about to. Tyrone knew he had to move fast at this point unless he wanted to deal with a horde as well as a Tank. Tyrone picked up a small scrap off wood from remnants of a nearby box, and threw it as hard as he could to his lift.
The Tank gave a roar and charged off in the direction that it landed. As soon as he heard the Tank running towards his distraction, he bolted in the opposite direction and hope to that Jack had gotten Dillon to the truck by the time he escaped. 'If I can just get past the Boomer I heard I can…' "Shit!"
The Boomer in question had managed to sneak up on his and cut him off. Tyrone rolled out of the way as the Boomer let out a long stream of bile. Tyrone narrowly got away un-slimed. But his outburst was more problematic than the screeching of the horde that had been alerted to the bile. The Tank had heard Tyrone and has swiftly making its way back towards him.
"Over here!" Tyrone heard Sam shouting at him and soon found that she had positioned herself on one of the walkways. "Get that ugly sumbitch over here and I can take care of him."
"Got it!" Tyrone said as he dodged yet another volley from the Boomer.
Knowing that the Boomer was too slow to keep up with him, unlike all of the other infected, he ran ahead to find and lure the Tank towards Sam. It didn't take very long.
He heard a grunt of force from the Tank and knew it was going to throw something so he ducked out of instinct. What came careening through the crates was a massive slab of concrete. Tyrone looked through the splinters and saw the Tank, blood no longer spilling from its leg, in full terror as it spotted what it was looking for. Unfortunately he had to go past the Tank to reach Sam. Got to his feet in a flash and started in the other direction.
Now Tyrone was scared. A Tank breathing down his neck, an incoming horde was closing in, and a Boomer running around somewhere. 'That's it! The Boomer.' Tyrone needed to find the Boomer. Thankfully it found him. With a large belch and another dodge Tyrone found the Boomer close to where he left it and quickly ran behind it. He turned around and gave it a quick smack with his gun sending the Boomer reeling back a few feet. He charged at it and repeated the process before backing up several feet. That was when the Tank rounded the corner.
Not wasting a moment Tyrone sprayed. But not at the Tank, he aimed instead at the Boomer right next to it. As expected the Boomer erupted in an explosion of flesh and bile, covering the Tank. As soon as the Boomer exploded, Tyrone was on the move again and running past the Tank as it recovered.
Stopping only to shoot at the Tank again Tyrone ran to where Sam wanted him to. Tyrone only now saw the common Infected as they reached the warehouse. They paid him almost no mind as he ran past them in the opposite direction. His plan had worked. The bile from the boomer was drawing the horde towards the Tank, and with any luck would slow it down long enough to get into position.
Tyrone climbed up the nearby boxes and started leaping across them to reach Sam incase the bile wasn't enough to distract the horde. He found Sam still on the walkway but further down next to a very rugged looking case. "Sam!" He shouted to get her attention. "What's the plan?"
Sam had a look of frustration and annoyance. "You let me worry about that. Where is that ugly mother f-" Sam was cut off by a roar of anguish. That was soon followed up by the body of an Infected being thrown towards Tyrone. He ducked out of instinct and the body went sailing over him back into the warehouse.
"He's coming." Tyrone squeaked.
"Good. Stand there," Sam pointed to a spot on the ground below the walkway, "and get it to stay in that spot long enough for me to crash this thing down on it."
Putting up no argument, Tyrone dropped down and stood where Sam wanted him too. It wasn't long before the Tank appeared through the dim lighting of the warehouse. With rage in its eyes it charged full tilt at Tyrone knowing that this one was the cause of most of his annoyance. As it got closer Tyrone's grip on this weapon tightened as he got ready to jump out of the way.
With a mighty swing of its hands, the Tank brought both of its hands up to smash Tyrone. "Sam! Now!" Tyron shouted as he jumped out of harm's way. The Tank brought its fists down on the spot that Tyrone had been and crushed the concrete underneath making a shock wave that threw Tyron of guard. When he managed to reorient himself he saw the Tank only feet from him. The Tank turned to face him and it reared back in furry as it roared its frustration at him.
The Tank took one step towards him and that's as far as it got. The crate that Sam was standing next to came crashing down on top of the Tank essentially knocking it unconscious. Astounded that Sam could have moved such a large objet, he stared up at her as she made her way down on top of the numerous crates.
"Is it dead?" Tyrone asked as he helped Sam down from the last box.
"I don't know," Sam said as she grabbed a small object attached to her belt, "but it soon will be." She looked at Tyrone and said in a rather obvious tone, "We should run." Sam then pulled the pin on the grenade, tossed it towards the Tank, and started running after Tyrone. Threw heard the explosion, and subsequent explosions as they reached the exit to the warehouse. Both out of breath, they stared back at the warehouse as it started to catch fire. Tyrone was the first to regain his composure. "Let's get back to the truck." He spoke in monotone.
"Ya." Sam said regaining her breath. "Let's hope Jack's gotten Dillon there in one peace." Tyrone nodded in agreement and they started a jog towards their destination.
"What took you guys so long?" Jack inquired as Sam and Tyrone climbed into the truck.
"I don't know if you realized this, but that…THING, is a lot harder to kill than simply shooting it." Sam retorted. A wheezy strained voice came from the back. "Tank."
"I told you, you shouldn't exert yourself after what you did." Jack was very cross.
Dillon sat up and repositioned himself as Sam made her way to the back to join him. "I told you I'll be fine. It honestly wasn't as bad as it looked. Besides, you patched me up real nice."
Jack rolled his eyes and shook his head as he started the truck to finally leave. "If you say so."
