Smurfing the Spell

Luck proved to be on his side. With just a second ahead of Azrael's feline molars, his small, blue body slid upon the floor and out the door. The crash of the cat against the door startled him as he tripped over his head and into the damp forest dirt.

Once he picked himself up, he ran as far as he could from the hideout. There was no time to waste. Vexy was in danger, and Grouchy was going to make sure Gargemel's evil plan would fail. Inwardly, he blamed himself for the current situation.

He should have known how selfish and unwilling Gargemel was. If he had trust him to save him, then something was terribly out of place. He should have listened to Papa, he should have stayed away from Vexy.

But wait... He slowed down... In a sense, her captivity with Gargemel meant that she would be nowhere near him...

No! Grouchy was not going to fall so far as to leave Vexy to his sinister ways. It was up to him to bring her back to the Smurf Village safe and sound, despite any odds. He felt much better knowing that he was rescuing her because she was his friend, his fellow smurf, and even if he felt a bit smurfy for her, he wasn't going to make that his only reason to be her hero.

He promised himself to toughen up and deal with the illness that came with newfound smurfy feelings. Maybe, just maybe, in the end...

He stopped thinking about it, putting it all to the back of his mind. Focusing on finding Papa and the other smurfs and rescue Vexy!

"Papa, Papa!" Hefty ran to his side.

Papa put out a hand to calm Hefty, signaling him that he was alright, "Don't worry about me, Hefty, I'm fine. We need to go after Azrael!"

"He took Vexy, Papa!" Nerdy wiped the tears from behind his specs, "We don't know where he went,"

"I know Gargemel well to know he isn't that far from here," Papa pointed down the direction Azrael went, "We'll follow Azrael,"

Nerdy sniffed, "But Papa, what if it's a trap? What if Gargemel captured Grouchy and is using Vexy to lure us into a cage, or a prison?"

"There's too many of us, Papa.. If he takes us all.." Hefty began, slumping at the possibility that going after Vexy and Grouchy would be the worst decision.

"You're right.. We have to go back to the village and let the others know," Papa decided, his gaze to the others showing his sensitive choice.

Just as Papa spoke, Grouchy caught the sound of his voice. He ran faster, hoping to find him somewhere near. "Papa, Papa!"

Papa's focus snapped to the sound of his name, looking around to see if he hadn't been imagining things. Facing Nerdy, who had seemed to also hear the shouts, they group began to look around. Hefty braced himself for any funny business.

"Papa, Papa, I'm ok, I'm ok!" Grouchy emerged from the leaves, from the same direction Azrael fled off in.

"Grouchy! What happened? Where's Vexy?" Hefty ran to Grouchy.

Grouchy stopped beside Hefty to give the horrible news, "Gargemel took her, he's planning something to get us, and he's using Vexy to turn her evil again!"

"No... Not Vexy...," Papa buried his head in his hands.

Nerdy came to Papa, "What, what is it, Papa? We'll get Vexy, don't worry—"

"No, we'll be too late if we go back to the village, we have to go now before Gargemel turns Vexy's soul back to her unsmurfy ways," Papa looked to Grouchy, "If he turns her back, she can not return to the Smurf Village,"

"What do you mean?" Grouchy wrinkled his forehead.

"She'll be unable to welcome the smurf ways once again, it'll be forgotten,"

Grouchy pushed Hefty away, running to shake Papa by the shoulders, "What do you mean she can't go back! Why didn't you tell me? I wouldn't have went to Gargemel at all if I knew, you shouldn't have brought her along, you knew the danger!"

"Stop it, Grouchy!" Nerdy pushed him forcefully, "It isn't Papa's fault, he told her to stay, but she wanted to come to find you! But you... You went to Gargemel... For what? What if he's done something to you, what if you're just another piece to his evil plan?"

"I'm not, I'm telling the truth, I just didn't know where else to go,"

"I don't trust you," Hefty helped Papa recover.

"Neither do I," Nerdy agreed.

"I don't care if neither of you trust me, Papa knows me well enou—"

"No, Grouchy, I don't anymore," Papa looked away, "You seeking Gargemel is far from the choice the Grouchy smurf I know would make,"

"But Papa—"

"Just go to the village, Grouchy, we'll take care of Vexy,"

They walked away from Grouchy, abandoning him in their new quest to save Vexy. Grouchy watched in anger, feeling confused and furious. He may have sought Gargemel but he hadn't known about his true intentions. He was desperate, he was falling in love and that was causing him to become sick. There was nothing Papa would do, it was hopeless.

And now, it was his fault. Well if that's how they viewed it, he was going to fix everything. He was going to save Vexy, even if he had to do it alone.
