Here's the next 1000 words. This chapter is rather remedial but after this it gets rather interesting if I do say so myself. I actually don't like that saying. Like, of course I say so. I just said so
ANYwAY here ya go. Hope ya like it.
It all happened so fast. The raft, the storm, the whole island falling to pieces. The raft was the invention/project that the three teenagers were working on. The storm is what ruined the raft. The Island falling apart is a different story.
The raft was built.
SECONDARYISLAND
The raft was something that they had been working on for some time. Maybe a half a week before the small storm that appeared just off the coast of the secondary island, the three were sitting on a bent over palm tree watching the sunset. They talked about the ocean, their world, and how they wished to travel. Kairi, the third of the friends, was a castaway originally. She was found floating in the water at a very young age and woke with no memories. She didn't come from their island chain and they had never heard of anyone leaving. Her arrival inspired them. They wanted to get out- explore.
Riku, Sora, and the girl (Kairi) had become accustomed to having Soku and Rio with them. When the girls woke up in the mornings, Kairi felt obligated to bring them along with her to the secondary island to help with a project that the three friends had been working on for some time; a large wooden raft that at that point had a base made of thick logs and a pole that probably was meant to be the mast. Kairi seemed to be the organizer for the raft and came every day with a list of things that they needed to continue building. The first couple of times that the girls helped, they were each sent with Kairi to do the light lifting of the day. They were sent to get coconuts or lengths of rope. Every day it changed until the boys needed to do lots of heavy lifting to get the sail attached to the mast. It was a three person job but they both assumed that they could do it by themselves.
"Sora, I told you to hold that up steadily so that I can get it bolted down." Riku spouted out of annoyance. Sora was having the hardest time holding the post steady until somehow it felt lighter. When he looked to his right he let out a laugh. Soku held up the other end of the large wooden log and was shaking her head in disapproval at him trying to lift it on his own. This headshake had a different kind of effect than Soku wanted. His laugh was light and carefree as she blowed her hair out of her eyes. It was like looking at a small child in her mother's pumps. She looked as if she was trying to be an adult which just made him laugh harder.
"Looks like we should have had this one help us with our jobs." Sora said, letting go of the wood as soon as Riku got it bolted down and gave him the thumbs up. Riku held up his hand for him to high-five before sending a charming smile to Soku.
"We'll keep it in mind from now on." Riku agreed before leaning on mast. "We only have to hang the sail now if you want to help." Soku raised an eyebrow at the offer and gave a small snicker at the thought of leaving Rio alone with Kairi. The girl seemed like a good intentioned person but she would not close her mouth for longer than it took for her to chew. Soku found that she was able to tune out most of the chatter but Rio had a short fuse. More than once she found Rio with a tight grip on her sleeves or the tool she was using, to keep from exploding all over the place.
"Anything's better than fishing and collecting more coconuts." She decided. She bent over to pick up the large tarp and rope and held it up with a smile that she gave for the benefit of the boys. It must have been obvious because Riku let out a small laugh and grabbed the rope from her arms. Sora 's own smile disappeared but he followed Riku none the less.
Riku and Sora screwed in eyelet screws for the rope to slide through while Soku slid the last and skinniest log through the bottom of the canvas. The ropes slit through the top of the canvas and were tied up through the eyelet screws. The three took a few steps back to admire the last few steps that they put into making their raft.
"I don't think I've ever been more proud of something I've done." Riku said quietly as if he was a little ashamed of it. Sora nodded in agreement and they both looked to Soku for acknowledgement. She gave them a confused look and shrugged.
"I dunno... I could have been." She let out after some hesitation. There was a heartbeat of silence before Sora began laughing out loud at the fun she was poking at herself. Riku joined next with a small chuckle and Soku found herself smiling like she had in the cave, weeks before. A soft trill of laughter lifted out of her throat and both the boys looked at her in surprise. Her smile was gone now and replaced with genuine confusion.
"You have a beautiful laugh." Sora emitted almost as a whisper as if he didn't mean to say it at all. Soku threw a hand over her mouth out of embarrassment before quickly walking across the beach and away from the raft. Sora looked to Riku for some sort of answer but Riku only shrugged and started to follow her through the sand. "But it's true..." he pouted before rubbing his hands through his spiky hair and set off after the other two.
So that was a little awkward, right? WELL on to the next chapter! Tell me what you thought (questions, comments, concerns) the usual. See ya next time!
