Ch22
The light in the kitchen was still on. Sasuke peeked out from his room towards Tobirama's bed. The former Anbu was still out cold from when he had dragged himself into the apartment well before sunrise. Sasuke himself had been dismissed earlier than was usual from academy today so he had made it home by two. He would have lingered to train with that baka Naruto but Tobirama was back and he had really wanted the man to teach him a new Jutsu. He frowned deeply but on his face it came out looking more off a pout as he continued looking towards Tobirama's sleeping form.
The Senju had been in and out of missions for the past few weeks and this last mission seemed to have drained him for good. It seemed all Tobirama had time for when he got home lately was food a shower and sleep, and a lot of it at that. Sasuke didn't want to admit it but it bothered him to see such a powerful nin, in his mind anyway, looking so weak and drained. He bit out a noise of frustration as he turned towards his room. It would have to be silent reading today, he didn't want to risk using chakra and waking Tobirama. Sometimes when Tobirama was out cold he could sense even a window being opened such as the time Sasuke opened the one next to the sleeping Anbu. All it had taken was a waft of air to wake him and he was facing a katana which Tobirama sheathed moments later when he had realized it was only Sasuke. Other times like the time he crashed several pots and pans in the kitchen the Jonin didn't even stir. He wasn't too happy about being brushed to the side but Tobirama's missions were vital and it wasn't like the man ignored him outright and brushed him to the side like his father or claimed he was busy with things he had no idea off like his brother. Tobirama always made him aware when he had missions and he always attempted to make time for him. He knew that the village was in a state of unrest but even then a small part of him silently screamed for attention. He shook his head trying to quiet down that part of himself. It wasn't Tobirama's fault that he was always being sent on missions. Especially with all the unrest and whispers that were going around of a war. The academy instructors thought they were being subtle when they whispered but you knew what was going on if you knew what to listen for, especially since Anko was never one to hush up such matters even in front of little cute academy students.
His train of thought was cut off however when he heard a window being silently slid open. He turned sharply kunai drawn in ready stance only to see a figure balancing outside on the windowsill in the cool night air.
"Who's there?" His eyes widened as the figure slid in fluidly through the window next to Tobirama's sleeping form with no response. His eyes widened as the pale face and long lanky hair came into view. "My my quite brave are we?" The smooth voice suggested.
He clenched his Kunai tighter. This man may have healed Tobirama back then at the hospital and was his Sensei but that was still no reason to be trustful especially when said man had all but broken into his apartment, there were doors for a reason. The snake sannin as he remembered his father once pointing him out from afar simply spread his hands in a mock peace before a senbon hit his kunai precisely in the center of the handle nailing it to the wall. His eyes widened as he took in the sannin and then looked over his right shoulder to the kunai now embedded in the wall. "Wha…What are you doing here?" He tried to sound loud and threatening but his words came out rather shaky to his ears.
"Oh this and that." The sannin said lightly as he made his way to the fridge languidly. Sasuke swallowed dryly padding numbly and almost involuntarily after the sannin still quite unsure as to what was going on and how to react but if the sannin was a threat Tobirama would have immediately woken up right? He hoped so though he wasn't sure with Tobirama in the state that he was in. He tilted his head peeking into the fridge from a distance as he observed the sannin rummaging through the sparse supply of food which he himself had purchased. Orochimaru's hand froze at the carton of milk with a raised eyebrow.
"Hmm?" He inquired almost curiously in his gravely lilting voice. He shrugged involuntarily as he scuffed the blue rug with his socked foot. The moment passed and the sannin's hands froze on two thin packs of Motoyaki. "Hmm." He threw the packets onto the low table between the kitchen and bed littered with several of Sasuke's academy scrolls. Sasuke wondered whether he should say anything about how possessive Anko was about the instant ocean hay food but decided against it as he observed the sannin pull more food from the fridge. The snake sannin seemed to have felt his gaze and turned. Sasuke felt a distinct feeling of discomfort slide down his spine as the sannin peered at him. A feeling as if he was being weighed and judged crossed his mind but the moment passed as the sannin turned to put the kettle on the stove seeming to suddenly loose interest in him.
"You are Uchiha are you not."
"Sasuke. Sasuke Uchiha" His father had always told him to introduce himself properly especially to his elders. Even if said elder was making him feel rather awkward and out of place as he was almost ignored as if the sannin lived here and he was the guest.
"Sasuke kun then, have you unlocked your Sharingan yet, hnnn?" The sannin's voice sounded curious but Sasuke could still feel a hint of danger around it as if he should be careful what he said. His father also had always told him to be careful around strangers especially powerful Shinobi. One could never know what to expect from them unless you knew them very well and even then not always. He swallowed again, before shaking his head. "No, but I will one day." He was an Uchiha, he would unlock his sharingan and kill Itachi if that was the last thing he did.
"It is quite fascinating, the Sharingan. I wonder if its activation has anything to do with specific age. After all many Uchiha have lived through frightening or life threatening events yet not unlocked their Sharingan while others unlocked it effortlessly. I had started a study on the Sharingan two years ago. Such a shame really. With the right testing and experimentation I am sure I could have come up with quite the results." Sasuke froze as the sannin spoke a weird sensation rushing through his body as he stared in almost morbid half fascination at the man as he spoke about his clan in such a candid manner. The words spoken seemed to be lost on him as he kept listening to the sannin feeling his body slowly going numb. "Itachi was seven when he unlocked his Sharingan so perhaps you will unlock yours soon as well." Sasuke's fist clenched seven? He had known Itachi had unlocked his sharingan young but he hadn't given much thought to how young until now. Seven? He was already eight! Itachi had a whole year on him! Anger welled up inside his body as it shook with rage. "I will kill him. I will unlock my Sharingan and I will kill him." He could feel his chakara building up in him as it never had before. A killing intent so sharp it almost felt good. Good to have so much power coursing through his veins. The snake sannin didn't seem impressed however and seemed to almost look down at him with an amused look on his face making a shiver course involuntarily through his spine. "If you truly wish to defeat Itachi you will need a lot more power than you have now." The sannin chuckled lightly. Suddenly the air began building up around the sannin, his eyes widened as the killing intent grew sharp and cold like ice and death itself almost suffocating him. He shuddered at the power the rage the hate the darkness falling back onto the rug as he looked up at the sannin towering above him.
"Sensei?" His eyes widened as the killing intent suddenly vanished his head snapping to Tobirama whose right hand was on his drawn Katana and left hand was trying to rub away the haze of sleep and chakara exhaustion confusion and alarm leaking into his voice. "What's going on?"
