Kaley awoke the next morning, allowing herself a false sense of relief, thinking that the previous nights events had merely been an all too real nightmare. That was, until she looked over at the laundry and saw the dirt and grass stains on her clothes, along with some leftover goo from killing the vampire. She groaned and tucked her head beneath her covers. There was no way she could get through the day with everyone in her face. She'd snap or freak over something small and then everyone would look at her like she was insane.

When she didn't go down to leave, her father went up to check on her. She fed him her famous sick routine and got him off her case. Logan watched his daughter roll over and listened to her fall asleep before gently closing her door. Kaley wasn't aware that her father knew all about her fake sick routine. Logan eagerly walked to the professor's office, entering without knocking since Charles knew full well that he was on his way.

"I need a moment with the professor." Logan said, implying that he wanted Jean, Scott, and Storm to leave. They complied, having become more than used to Logan's need for privacy.

"Logan I know what you've come to ask and you know I can't do it."

"Professor, I need you to try again. I need some insight as to what's going on with my child. Very rarely does she lie to me. Actually, there are times when she's a little too honest; but when she does lie it concerns me."

Logan, I've been trying since the two of you arrived. Just as it was back then, I am no closet closer to being able to penetrate her mind as I was before."

"Dammit!"

"Here's a thought. Why don't you just talk to her? Ask her what's going on."

"I…I don't know. I don't want to be the prying, overprotective father that ends up driving his teenage daughter to run off into the night with some punk and get tattoos out of rebellion. I know I've been overcompensating for her mother's death by giving her so much freedom, but I don't know what else to do."

"Surely you don't think Kaleyna would go in that direction otherwise you would be as hard on her as you are on your students in the danger room."

"But what if it's….you know….boy trouble."

Logan was almost sure he saw the professor crack a smile, but chose to ignore it when the famous Xavier advice started flowing.

"Logan, she's your daughter and you mean everything to her. I don't have to be psychic to see that. Just talk to her. I'm sure it's just normal teenage stuff. Don't kill yourself trying to figure out the complexities of a teenage girl. You'll drive yourself mad."

This time the professor actually did smile.

Kylie had dragged herself through school and one last cheer practice before Friday night's basketball game. She and Alex had made up during lunch that day, and she was now sitting in the bleachers waiting to cheer her friends on. As the girls exited the locker room, they crossed paths with some of the players. Among them was a very excited Kellan charging towards Kaley. He swept her up in a giant hug and spun her around.

"Kellan, what's going on." Kaley said between laughs.

"You're looking at a guy who's averaging a B+ in Trig! And it's all thanks to you, you beautiful goddess."

"Kellan, that's great!" she responded, throwing her arms around him. She had tutored him, helped him ace every test and quiz, and helped him with an extra credit project to keep him on the team. Basketball really was his ticket to college, and pulling his grades up would only make them want him more.

But no good moment was ever long lived. It seemed as though every time she hugged Kellan, Pietro showed up. He was turning the corner and stopped dead in his tracks when he saw them. His jaw tightened and Kaley practically jumped back from Kellan, clearing her throat. Pietro began walking towards them, pausing when Mandy passed by on her way to the gym.

"The beautiful miss Mandy," he said while grabbing her by the waist and pulling her closer, "We still on for tonight? Post victory celebration party at Ryan's house?" he made sure he was loud enough for Kaley to hear.

"Absolutely. " Mandy responded, not realizing Kaley was behind her. Pietro pecked her on the cheek and sent her on her way to the gym. Then, he resumed walking towards the locker room where the players were getting ready for the game to start.

"Don't you guys look cozy." He said with a sneer on his face that Kellan didn't quite catch. Kaley didn't know if her face was portraying anger or hurt or disgust because she felt all of those things. She forced a smile onto her face and rubbed Kellan's arm flirtatiously before wishing him a good game and then running off to the gym. She smirked to herself at the way Pietro's jaw has had twitched before she'd turned her back on him. She high fived Ally as she joined the cheerleaders on the sideline, shooting Mandy what she was sure was a dirty look. Luckily for Mandy, she wasn't a flier or Kaley would've made sure she got dropped today; even if it did mess up their performance.

The announcer introduced the opposing team first before introducing the home team. The girls cheered hard to help give the boys every ounce of confidence they could. The starting five hit the court and the game was on. Generally, the team was able to assert dominance early on, but they seemed to be struggling. Maybe that wasn't s weird for normal basketball teams, but Pietro was their unknown secret weapon. Somehow, even he was lagging. Harlem gave him a confused look that Pietro brushed off.

"Dude, get your head in the game! What's wrong with you? Seriously?!"

Pietro rolled his eyes and continued jogging down the court, successfully stealing the ball from the other team. Moments later, it became evident just why the team was down twenty point in the second quarter. Pietro dribbled the ball, looking for someone to pass to. The only open man was Kellan. Pietro looked at him, gritted his teeth, and lost concentration. This allowed the other team to steal the ball and score on them again. Pietro groaned in frustration before running back down the court.

"What's going on with Pete?" Alex asked Ally and Kaley after creeping onto the court out of concern.

"I have no idea." Ally said.

"I think I do." Kaley responded, seeing the accidental bump between Kellan and Pietro's shoulders.

"What the hell is wrong with Maximoff?!" the coach angrily asked Harlem as the boys passed by.

"Kaley!" Harlem responded before taking the ball and passing to Kellan, finally scoring them another point.

The coach, the team, and half the front bleachers turned to look at Kaley. Coach crooked a finger at her in a come here motion. She slowly walked past all the glaring eyes and stood before the coach and the angry jocks on the sideline.

"Kaley, what did you do?"

"I didn't do anything! We're not even together anymore. Pete's just being stupid as usual."

"Kaley, come on." Coach pleaded in a desperate tone, "You gotta fix my boy. I will not miss out on the championship game. I've had the winning team for the last 4 years. One more and I get an award."

Kaley looked at the longing on coach's face and sighed deeply, "Call a time out." She said.

Coach visibly relaxed and then signaled the ref that he needed a time out. The boys came in for what they assumed was a huddle for the coach to yell at Pietro. Pietro took one look at Kaley and balled his fists. He stood on away from her and folded his arms across his chest while everyone else glared at him. Kaley rolled her eyes and stormed over to Pietro. She grabbed him by the back of his neck and dragged him off to the side.

"What is your problem. You're gonna throw the game and ruin it for everyone?!" Pietro tried to turn from her but she grabbed his arm and pulled him back around, "You're going to ruin it for your coach? Yourself? Your teammates?"

"Oh you mean ruin your new boy toy's chances at impressing his scouts?" he accused angrily.

"Dude, will you please get off that?! I'm not like you. I'm not running around with my ex's friend and teammate." She responded, referring to his fling with Mandy. When he didn't respond she raised an eyebrow at him, signifying that they both knew she was right.

"I don't care what you say. You can't tell me that there's nothing going on when, every time I see you two he's touching you. I mean what -

"Pietro!" Kaley exclaimed, grabbing his face with both hands and pulling him until their foreheads were touching. She stared deep into his violet eyes, "listen to me, for once. There is NOTHING going on with me and Kellan, okay? I was helping him with math I told you that. You refused to trust me. But I swear to you that that's all it was."

For a few moments, Pietro stared silently into her eyes. Her beautiful eyes that mystified him every time. She had him on a string and she didn't even know it. But, looking in her eyes now, he could tell she was sincere. Before she could react, he placed a gentle kiss on her lips; lingering for just a moment.

"Okay." He said before smiling and running back to the team. He and Kellan clasped palms and hugged each other. It was so easy for guys. Kaley touched her lips, still stunned, and rejoined the girls. Ally and Alex were ready to bombard her with questions.

"Guys, don't even. I don't know, but we are not back together."

Alex went back to the bleachers, sharing a look with Ally before she turned her attention to the court. The game started again, Pietro grabbing the ball and setting Kellan up for a 3 pointer. It made a swishing noise and the crowd cheered. Pietro ran past the girls and blew a kiss at Kaley. She smiled and shook her head, her eyes following the boys down the court. For a moment she made eye contact with a fuming Mandy. Kaley gave her a malicious smirk before returning to cheering on the team. No matter how far Pietro strayed he would always want to come back to Kaley.

With Pietro's head back in the game the boys crushed the competition by 30 points. The scouts were impressed and the coach was happy. Everybody was ready to head over to the big celebration game, but Kaley chose to skip it. Without letting anyone know, she ducked through the crowd and went home; not at all in the mood to party. Her emotions were all over the place and she'd had quite a lot to deal with lately. After that unexpected kiss from Pietro, she just wanted to go to bed.
